InDesign: How to Create Numbers in Circles Within a List (Video Tutorial)

Ғылым және технология

In this Three Minutes Max video, Mike Rankin demos an easy way to put numbers in circles-even inside a numbered list! He uses a carefully crafted paragraph rule and builds that rule into a paragraph style to automate the process.
Three Minutes Max comes from a fun-yet very competitive-session at our annual CreativePro Week conference. Speakers have three minutes to wow the audience with the tip and win a prize for a lucky conference attendee. Paragraph rules are so useful. In a day's before paragraph shading, I used it for making inverted titles.

Very cool! I like to make rounded "banners" behind headlines/titles using them. -EG

That's brilliant, but what about two or more digits? Will the circle increase in size?

The circle size is based on the weight of the point size so it won’t increase for double digits. If you know you need double digits you should set the size for that initially.

I would love to be able to create some kind of style in InDesign where I have my inches on the top and mm on the bottom... kind of like a fraction like display

You could use GREP to style the numbers before and after the fraction divider line. -EG

We have some videos on our channel (and I have some on my personal channel, as well [Erica Gamet]). CreativePro also has articles (free), and a book and a course (paid). It's basically looking for patterns of text and then styling that text. You might pose your question to the FB group "Treasures of GREP." They are a super helpful bunch! Good luck! -EG
