Independence for Airgunners: the SMACO Portable Compressor

In this video I review and put to the test a portable compressor by SMACO.
It proved to be a very useful unit and a valuable companion in my outings.
Positively a piece of equipment that has a place in my gun cabinet.

Nice. Looks to be basically the same thing as my GX CS3-I I grabbed from Amazon about 8 months ago now. Zero issues thus far but grabbed Amazon’s extended 4 year warranty in the event something fails. GX also makes a lithium battery powered version now. Not something I have a need for, but a neat idea.

Don't know what the manual says but it is important to open the filter to let it dry after pumping your gun. I second some of the comments about getting a tampoon style cotton filter/moisture trap of some kind , that small one supplied with the Yong Heng for example is sufficiant for filling your gun and can be re-used a couple of times after it has dried out. Important to open this to let it dry as well, otherwise the inside of the filter housing and the fittings will start to corrode and rust. Been thinking of adding a gx compressor in some form to my arsenal, could come in handy some times. Nicely edited and interesting video as usual, thanks for sharing Alex. 👍

@@Airgunfunrich I have 2 Yong Heng compressors and a Spritech AC/DC compressor that “Sounds” exactly like the one you have. It came with a small tampon style filter. I change it out about every 6-8 fills. Honestly I only use it when my tanks are low ie…3000 PSI and a few of my gun want 4350 PSI like my Liberty, and my Avengers long and Bullpup. It tops them of fairly quick since I used the remains of the tanks to bulk fill. It only runs for maybe 3-5 minutes and the temp NEVER hits 50C. I let the fan run till the temp is below 30C. For what ever reason it will not work on my LCS SK-19🤷‍♂️. The air keeps coming out of the bleed valve after filling to 250 Bar. Do have any suggestions for this issue sir? I drained the air out, removed the foster fitting, cleaned and greased with silicon grease yet it seems as though the bleed screw doesn’t allow enough flow to close off the valve on the foster fitting. I hope you know what to do cause several others don’t even get what’s happening🤷‍♂️💯

That inline filter is totally inadequate for the job of trapping the moisture. I put a double inline water/oil filter trap in addition to the supplied single on my mains compressor. You can buy them cheap on eBay. The mains powered model fills my 7 litre 300 bar bottle without any effort. I've had it three years now and it has paid for itself already at £134 delivered. Mind you the prices have increased a bit since then but if you shop around Inthe UK you can get one for about £175. Brilliant little compressor treated with care. I'm fortunate that my job as a fire service breathing apparatus instructor trained me in compressor maintenance and repair so I appreciate how vital maintenance is.

The safest way to connect to a car battery is to connect the red clip to the positive terminal first and then connect the black clip (ground) to something on the engine/chassis away from the battery. Car batteries *can* generate hydrogen gas and you really don't want a spark near a hydrogen/oxygen mix. Is it likely that you'll get a BANG with modern car batteries? Dunno, but changing the order of connecting clips so that any spark made when you complete the circuit is far away from the potential gas generator will reduce that possibility.

@@AirRifleActivities To be honest, I don't know of any case in relatively modern times (we are talking from late last century) where there was such a hydrogen gas explosion from a lead-acid battery due to an electrical spark. Maybe that was because of training but it may well have been because most modern batteries running with modern charging systems don't generate a lot of hydrogen gas even in the worse case. Still, if it doesn't take a lot of effort to make the spark that happens when you complete a circuit occur away from the potential problem, then you should try to do it that way. This advice includes jumper cables as well!

@@AirRifleActivities Definitely do! :) In my case it always happens when i use these type of compressors for fills close to each other, like when tuning and you constantly need to refill. If you bleed off the valve and you feel wet air coming out chances are high it will spit wet air through the hose if you use the compressor again within the next hour. I always run the device unconnected from the rifle and hold the hose close to my skin or lips to sense if the air is dry or wet. Sometimes this is not even needed as you can literally see drops flying out. Changing the tampon in the connector will not stop this. If air is wet i would advice to let it run unconnected for a couple of minutes, do the skin/lip test again, before hooking it up to your rifle. Good devices for travelling and quick fills. Not recommended for heavy use iow many fills per day bc of wet air issue. Learned the hard way :)
