For anyone curious: This crossing is located at Wason Avenue in Springfield, MA. All of the signals were modernized with newer equipment but the crossing still looks generally the same.

@@ThePeelRegionTransitChannel I would highly doubt this is in Canada, Between 1990 began advancement in signals, Incandescent light systems would be installed with wider, Light lens, Canadian rail company’s, Canadian national, Canadian pacific, And maybe even VIA Rail would go ham on this and would soon start to replace the old 1950s 8 inch light designs to more modern, Incandescent wide lens, During 2000-2010, LEDs were introduced and soon incandescent would see its days go dark in Canada at least to be mostly being replaced by LED Modern signals, Almost every 8 Inch crossing lights are not around with us anymore in Canada, All you see on railroads now is modern LED Lights, Because of this, This video was most likely recorded in the states somewhere.

I was trying to make a joke. However, in our country, some railroad crossings have to be activated by the engineer himself. He has to shoot a infrared beam on a sensor which makes the crossing activate. This is only the case by railroad crossings near a railway station, to keep the crossing shorter closed.

Our town Vandalia in Illinois has its own shortline called the Vandalia Railroad Company in the middle of town thats owned by the Pioneer Railroad. I got to ride in the cab one time because my grandpa knew the engineer. Their crossings are all gateless and programmed to where they have a certain memorized code that has to be entered into a white walky talkie like keypad in the trains. They only own two trains in this shortline by the way. to turn the crossings on, put in the certain intersection of crossings code and then hit the star. to turn it off, input the same password and hit the pound.

@@jm0lesky I would not really call this pumping, as this usually refers to the release of the gates because of a broken holding mechanism, with gates getting 'lowered' to the point where the 'motorpower up' switch comes in again, which in turn activates the motor to let the gates rise to their rest-position. But as the holding mechanism is broken, the gate will try to lower again and this cycle repeats. Pumping gates are very 'rhythmical'. This seems to be a problem with the announcement section(s).

  • @UltraMagaFan

These crossings are either controlled by motion sensors or electrical contacts that require wheels to be touching them to complete the circuit. My guess is that there is a bad connection between the rails and wheels due to rusty rails. The engineer can send radio tones to activate the crossing but that's only when they're too close to the road to activate it by moving. The ones activated by motion sensors will deactivate the crossing if the train is not moving so it will not block road traffic. This video explains it better: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZqWY1stskdfeoNo.html&ab_channel=DistantSignal I didn't realize this was a 7 year old comment until I typed all that crap.

Not the shunt.. if the train approaches the crossing and stops ahead of the signals, the gates stay down until 30 seconds passed. After 30 seconds of inactivity, crossings deactivate. So, the shunt is not broken. Perhaps glitched? No, not glitched.. It's a malfunction."This is called pumping. The crossings are unsure so they start going down and then back up. I have seen this happen all the time at Pan Am crossings in Connecticut, especially at Wooster Street in New Britain. Rusty rails and/or a certain type of wiring go a long way. On 10/5/2012 PL-1 went to Waterbury and during the entire time the train was in Waterbury the crossing signals at Federal Street and Center Street remained activated, and still did not shut off when the train returned through on its way back to Plainville. This is one of the reasons I love Pan Am.

This is the Wason Ave Crossing of the former B& M RR, in Springfield, the camera faces east, when the train is seen, that direction is north. The Crossing gates aren't really malfunctioning, it's confused, due to the train still being on the circuit, that train is on two crossing circuits. It just cleared Wason Ave and is probably fouling the Plainfield Street crossing. That area used to be Amtrak rail territory but thanks to Timothy Mellon, who absconded millions in track repair funds from Amtrak ,the Conn River Main runs no more..

As a signal electrician, I work on level crossings nearly every day, they are very complex in their circuitry as they must be "fail safe" and any failure will cause lights to flash and booms to drop, Without knowing the area, it looks like a track fault or a train moving on and off one of the control tracks??, too many causes to say ?. These faults usually combine angry motorists and frustrated train crews and dispatchers!!!, just another day at my office..LOL Cheers Gregg

Pan Am does not post a contact phone number at any of the crossings in Connecticut or to date on the Conn River Line. That may change when the Vermonter is rerouted there. For crossing malfunctions the Pan Am Operations Center can be contacted at 800-955-9208. The OC should only be contacted for real emergencies or if a crossing is activated and blocking the street with no train present. I do not consider this a malfunction. The crossing detected a train in the block but eventually deactivated.

What type of switches do you have in america? In Italy these Level Cossing were activated for both closing and opening by a mechanical pedal, which is immune to this type of things. This pedal is has two arms so that even the direction counts and only a correct sequence triggers the relay box. We also had AFO systems but they were abandoned many time ago. (they were used less and I don't know if they were immune to this problem). I do know that in some countries Level Crossing are triggered by track circuits and that with occupied circuit the level crossing is commanded to close and when the train frees the circuit the level crossing opens. This might be the case of the video when the train might be on the edge of the circuit and depending on how the system receinves the track circuit occupation it is continuously switching between closure and opening. Is this situation common in USA?

"four other signal techs had looked at and found a corroded fuse holder"? Good catch! Disappointed that the others did not consider that and check it. Skyman's (o)T(o) worked fine until the lone locomotive, nomal track speed, left the island and (o)T(o) kept operating until it was off the long approach(?) circuit. In San Rafael, CA. I saw a metal bead welded onto the railhead, presumably to cause better electrical contact to the wheels on the less-used track in the humid and rainy area.

The gate attached to the cantilever is so late going down. Like the signal with the bell will be down and the other gate is halfway on its trip going down. NEEDS FIXING

Probably the train is moving a little and the train cars are activating the crossing. That’s why it’s going off and on again and again
