Thank you for giving her a chance at life. I’m 74 and have had 2 large horses and several dogs but always have considered each one as a separate being and give each one the best one life we could and love each one. All of ours were given love, ours and the love and companionship that is natural in nature. Horses have herds and dogs have packs. We can be a part if they allow us. 😊

Late to the party on this... But one thing I really have come to respect about you, is that your horses are always more than just what they can do for your at the moment. Thank you for giving that lovely girl a chance. The horse in my profile pic was a Belgian cross, misused and sent to the meat auction by the Amish... His right shoulder looked a LOT like Inde's after her operation, and that was just day to day. He always had a limp, but he adored people, and especially children and softer personalities. Thankfully, he was rescued out of the slaughter pipeline by a sympathetic soul. He spent his days living in horse heaven, open fields, a river, an orchard, a warm run in barn, lots of friends, and lived to the ripe old age of somewhere in his mid-thirties. Even with the limp, even with no reason to choose people, he was the most gentlemanly horse I ever met. Polite and soft, and always looking for a friend and someone to love on him. He taught me a lot about intention when doing groundwork, and how soft you can be and still get results. Thanks for giving Inde that chance to hopefully teach a human the same thing down the road.

I'm so sorry that you and your pony had to go through this. ive seen horses come back from horrific accidents with the proper time and care. I see that you are more than willing to give Inde the same care. The Dachshund jumping (very high I might add) to get on the ramp was a bit of comedic relief in the middle there.

She’s so pretty. And really, if she ends up being a pasture puff, as long as she’s comfortable and happy, that’s enough.

I really 100% agree with what you said at the end; it drives me up the wall when people say a horse is "wasted" because like you said, they don't have aspirations of going Grand Prix or jumping round Badminton, they just want to have full bellies and be happy and sound. She seems a lovely genuine little mare and what a fighter. X

Lucky Indie to have you in her corner. She is a lovely pony. Years ago, I leased a horse that was for sale. She was not obviously lame, but I felt something strange when trotting to the right. It was a very slight shudder. I had my trainer ride her, and she felt it too. I asked the barn manager about the horse and discovered that the poor girl had a plate in her right shoulder. She was fine going straight and circling to the left, but circling to the right was painful. I ended the lease and prayed for the poor mare. Indie may never be a riding pony, but I have no doubt that you will make a way in the world for your cheeky pony.

She does not look like a miserable horse to me. She looks peaceful and happy in herself. As you said this sort of recovery is a very long process and rebuilding the muscle and regenerating the nerves are also going to take quite a while. Even to get to this point is such a remarkable recovery. Who knows what her body will do to compensate for some loss in that area. She's still young and growing. This is a work in progress. For her, with her brain and attitude it was definitely the right decision and even in this short video one can really see a horse that enjoys living, whatever her minor limitations.

I can completely relate with you and the struggles of having big dreams for our horses for something to completely change that in the blink of an eye. I currently have a 6 year old thoroughbred mare that had an amazing start to the beginning of her riding career then a freak accident that has essentially ended all hopes of a riding future for her. She somehow got in position where she felt the need to jump the fence and caught a leg on the top strand that flipped her over the fence onto the top of a pile of posts. She degloved her leg on the strand and was a very unhappy camper with stall rest, but we got through it. She’s almost two years past the incident and is only field sound. We continue to work towards a better outcome of soundness to hopefully have her enjoy packing some small kids around in the future, but so far she’s just my other mares companion and the youngsters teacher on manners, to which she is amazing at doing. I’ve had people ask why I never put her down or why I don’t sell her to get her off the feed bill. My answer has always been the same, she deserves the best life she can have, and if that’s a life in the field with friends and lots of love and treats, then that’s what she’ll get. She owes me nothing. The value she’s brought to my barn and my life through her loving and caring personality, and her ability to keep a herd of wild youngsters in line is more then I ever expected from her.

You did the right thing. She's sweet and beautiful, and quite the character. ....absolutely deserved a chance at whatever life she can have, even if she's only just a beloved pet. ❤❤❤ I once had to make a similar decision about a beautiful 7-month old kitten with a broken front leg. The surgical repair option didn't exist without thousands of dollars that I didn't and travel to another state, with a high chance of the surgery failing. The choice was amputation or euthanasia. I couldn't kill my sweet little cat over a broken leg. Just couldn't do it. So, she lived her best life on 3 legs. She was more upset about the cone of shame than the leg. Very stoic. Learned very quickly to do everything she had done before she got hurt. She lived 8 years and would still be here if not for a huge wildfire.

I thought what you said about horses and ponies ''do not always have to have a job'. They can be happy just being in the field, '' Was absolutely marvelous, But a (Companion) is a Very important Job !! A lot of people nowadays when paying for livery see that they have to have a job to justify the cost. Old horses are sold on (I think is awfull and end up doing too much) I know you agree. As you kept all yours till it was time to say goodbye, like myself. I had one of my horses for 31 years and it was devastating when it was time.. To give every animal a chance is the right thing to do as they are part of the family. 🥰

I love your viewpoint that it is completely okay for a horse to just be, just live and be happy. We focus way too much on them having a „purpose“ (mostly being ridden) and being of use to us. I think you absolutely made the right choice for her🙌🏻

it is kind of a luxury to do so though - just having a horse sitting in a pasture costs the same as one you can ride, which ultimetly is the reason most have horses. So its not always an easy choise :)

  • @literallynoone5473

    @literallynoone5473

@@ida2300 but why do we value riding horses more than just the horses themselves? Only being willing to keep a horse alive if it means they can be ridden just seems so cold. If my horse could never be ridden again he would still be my horse. I would still come out and spend time with him. I would still do ground work and have fun with him. I have a horse because I love my horse. Just being with him and enjoying his personality is enough. Horses are such wonderful forgiving animals, they don’t. Deserve to be sold or put down if they stop being able to fulfill some arbitrary purpose that humans invented for them. If they can live a full happy life in a field with friends, that should be more than enough reason to keep them around.

@@literallynoone5473 personally i agree and would do the same. my horses are pets, not just something i use for my own benefit... but i also have the privlege of having them at home for pretty cheep. Some ppl spend 750+ dollars a month to just keep their horse, and very few are able to afford double the amount just to have another horse they can ride (if thats their main reason for owning horses) its an expensive 750 dollars for 'nothing'. it is a bit harsh, true, but its reality for most ppl. either pay for the many, many years it can be alive and happy, and put your riding carrer on hold for maybe 10+ years, sell it for cheep not knowing how it will be treated for the rest of its life, or put it down. i think my point was just to aknowlege that keeping a horse as a pasture pet is not something everyone can afford and its not right to judge ppl who chooses differently. i am sure its not an easy choice for those who choose to euthanize

I'll never regret my decision and I'm positive that you will feel the same way. Horses give their all to us. Giving a little back like this is what we all should do anyway. Every time you post a video I end up with more respect and admiration for you. Keep it up and don't let others question what your heart is saying.

My mare was badly kicked in her left front knee at 12 yo. It broke my heart as I knew her training and competition was over. But...I've ignored what others have said, off and on throughout the years, about putting her down. She's now almost 28 and happy. I lightly ride her now which she seems to enjoy as she was a "working girl" up until she was kicked and she really enjoyed the variety of things we'd do. I believe you did the right thing with Indie. I too believe life, for a horse, is not what we get from them but also what we give back to them, especially when they get hurt.

Thank you so much for giving Indie the surgery & all of the other therapies she needs to heal. The Open Mind is so important & sometimes so hard to come by. That applies to all animals & also to people. Here in the US we mostly identify the value of our life & everyone else's based on our work, our productivity, our income---so many things other than just Being. We need to remember we are all Beings. That includes animals--all animals are sentient Beings.

My goodness, what a journey you have both been on. The bond between you & Inde is just glorious. In the pain management course I undertook after a car accident changed my life, I remember "the tyranny of 'shoulds'". I suppose its about expectations from ourselves & from others. It was awesome your comment of letting Inde "just be". There is such freedom in relinquishing expectations & control when these are not helpful (nor possible at times). Inde looks content, as do you Miri - there is so much to be said for that. Best wishes for all that the future holds for you both & much love🤗

Well done with Inde's rehab this far - she comes across as such a nice person and i think its fantastic you are giving her a chance while keeping her welfare as a horse as top priority, not just her outlook as a sport horse. For most people involved in horses they are absolutely pets like a dog or cat is a pet - as you say, they can just exist and be enjoyed for their presence here with us. Speaking from experience, anyone one who has had to euthanize a horse due to catastrophic injury or failing due to old age will tell you despite it being the humane option, it is truly a horrific experience and everything that goes with it which people do not like to discuss (surprisingly particulary bad in the EU unfortunately). If given a feasible (albeit hard) way to try give a horse a chance and in a position to do so, I would do the same. I can tell you love the animals themselves rather than just what they do for us 💛

You are spot on. I had to euthanize my 18 year old heart horse after he shattered a pastern while playing in the pasture. The bone was in multiple bits. He was standing on three legs. There was absolutely no other course of action but to euthanize him.. But for months, if not years, thereafter, I would wake up from a dead sleep, sit both upright in bed wide awake, and cry, “Did I do the right thing? “ I know that I did, but that emotional trauma never really goes away. If I could have him back in a condition in which he could live, I would do it in a heartbeat.

Great work with her. My lad, as a yearling, in a freak field accident ended up with a bone sequestrum. He had to go to hospital to have surgery for it to be removed then had box rest and vet visits twice a week to sedate him and change the bandage. It was a tough time for sure, then we had to introduce hand grazing which was also tough with a very frustrated youngster who was just learning his handling skills and didn’t always know how to deal with all his wound up energy. Thankfully he got the go ahead to turnout eventually as it healed well. He’s also turning 3 later this year. So far it looks positive and I’m hoping it doesn’t cause him issues later in life but I love him for him so if a ridden career doesn’t work out eventually then we can reevaluate and find something he can enjoy doing in his life 🥰 I spotted Inde wearing the hybrid halter in this with the rope and leather. Do you rate them? I had considered buying one for my lad but wasn’t sure if they were worth the money? Thanks! Xx

you're 100% right, a horse it not just 'vaulable' for what they can do for us, they have their own intrinsic value. And aside from that, imagine the knock on effect putitng her down would have had on the whole herd and you. and all those moments you had with her since. Not so long ago I was offered silly money for my mare and i told the person no amount would buy her and i was told 'love the sport, not the horse'.... and I just thought... you could not be more wrong but I kept my mouth shut and walked away because some people will never get it and they're the ones missing out.

Glad for what you did for her , she done well, could she be able to pull a pony trap, or would that be too much for her shoulder , just a thought :)

OMG, what a thing to say Indy is still a baby, good for you making the decision you did. She deserves a chance, it proves that to you they are not just animals to be got rid off when they are not 100%. She might just come through this perfectly if given time. And she is beautiful. Again loved the catchup.

What a fabulous temperament that filly has and also lucky to have you. Did she ever lie on the bad side or try to chew the dressing .

Ask the farrier to cushion her shoes. Ask him if it would help her with discomfort for a year or so.

Do you still own Kenko? Poor Inde, I’m glad she’s feeling better. That must of been so stressful for you!

She truly looks amazing. I saw a ball in the paddock with her. What other kinds of enrichment did you provide for her while she was rested ?

We had to be so careful with her injury, and thankfully she was very content with her stable as she always had friends around and forage. She had a treat ball sometimes but tended to bash it too hard.
