🎧💭 Amy Lee of Evanescence is my "anytime" voice. And I can't remember which Incubus song you did first, however, I would recommend Drive, Wish You Were Here, Dig, Anna Molly, and my personal #1 favorite, Warning ❤😁 I'd also like to add that this is a really cool but different arrangement of this song. The video is great too. And lastly.. Brandon has aged 😏SOOO well. Definitely look him up and his beautiful art work❤

I love your critiques. I just watched your Poets of the Fall analysis before this. If you want to analyze another one of theirs, listen to "The Poet and the Muse". It is from a video game called Alan Wake(great game). In the video game, the band is called "Old Gods of Asgard" which is actually Poets of the Fall who did the music for the game. The lyrics might not make sense as it directly plays a part in the story of the game, however the song is an fantastic example of their talent.

TRUTH It’s wild realizing my idolatry in college (completely sparred due to this song being on the radio a. lot. then) was actually not just a fascination in tonal quality, or body vibe syncing with music, or how beautiful he looks with his eyes closed… or open wide…. One of my favorite vocals of all time. There was a dvd of that recording. While in studio they let you hear just the vocal without the other tracks. So clean

Brandon is a freaking freak of nature. He's astounding live, I've no idea how he's so polished live.

As a fun side note, the "synth sound" you take note of at 20:50 is actually Mike Einziger's guitar tone with some sustain and delay on it. He's known for crafting these very lovely sounds with his amps and pedals. :)

Dig is definitely another one that needs to be looked at. Incubus has long been one of my favorite bands, and Dig is easily one of Brandon's best vocal performances. Additionally the message in the song is VERY good, and one I think you would enjoy as well.

Elizabeth… I have one for you 11 AM, by Incubus from this same line of live performance by them. It’s a song that showcases Brandon’s falsetto with lower tones, it has such a groovy melodic tone, it will sway you up and down like a roller coaster. It’s one of my absolute favorite songs from their second album Morning View, KEEP UP INCUBUS 🤘🏻♥️ Right now my anytime voice is Vessel from Sleep Token currently lol

Brandon has said in interviews that with each album he just tries to make it more difficult for himself vocally to just allow his voice rise to the challenge. I find one of his best ever vocals to be in the "if not now when" song. I recommend you listening to that one next! And also he’s my every time voice, since I was 3. I have learn so much about singing from him ❤

My bets on your favorites are still going to be "just a phase" "the warmth" " Mexico". Please stay with the morning view sessions performances! Live at red rocks was good to but the intimacy, ambiance, and overall performance of morning view sessions was the best

Incubus is one of those bands that I can listen to, no matter the mood. The vocals, the musicianship, everything, is just so incredible.

You have insanely accurate observations of how a word is pronounced. The precision..... Incubus are one of the cleanest sounding live bands i have ever seen/heard.

I’ve seen Incubus in concert 7 times and still try to see them every time they are playing near me. I love Brandon’s voice!

Anyone else love when she gets excited and starts to lean forward and looks like she starts to rise off her chair? Like she is floating off into the music. This entire performance was phenomenal btw.

20 years ago the girls I was crushing on in middle school were all infatuated with Brandon Boyd. I pretended not to be jealous. I was quite jealous. At the risk of my retraumatization, I sincerely enjoy appreciating his incredible talent through your analysis. :)

Incubus was a big part of my childhood in the early 2000s. I finally dug into their whole body of work around when Covid hit- they got me through it all. I’ve now seen them live 5 times: including their 2022 Red Rocks show. I’ve met so many incredible people BECAUSE of them, made friends, and even met them, and they are SO kind. It was so hot in Atlanta, and Brandon gave me his water, while they all lectured my friends on the importance of hydration and happily handed over the rest of their waters😅- they’re amazing, in every way, and they deserve all their flowers.

My favorite song of them was Drive. It was easy to play on guitar around the campfire on the beach. I guess incubus was a very popular group with the surfer crowd, at least in Latin America it was. It was catchy and and probably their most popular song at the time.

"Love Hurts" by Incubus is the song that got me into them back in like 2008. It was a free 1080p live video showcased on the Playstation network. His voice was so hauntingly beautiful live that it pulled me in.

Love hurts or Drive are the songs that brought so many people into Incubus

As somebody who loves to sing and is a **diehard** Incubus fan, I love seeing you analyze Brandon's voice and that you love it so much!! Brandon is my biggest hero, he inspired me to draw and sing again after I quit for years due to bullying. I've seen them live 4 times and have met Brandon twice. He's not just an incredible singer...he's a talented visual artist, and one of the most kind and down to earth people I've ever met!

Brandon has a great sense of rhythm because he actually plays percussion (djembe, bongo) and sometimes plays in some songs! "New Skin" is one of those songs, there's a Morning View Session performance too :)

Not seeing a lotta people suggest it but the song New Skin is what got me into Incubus back in the late 90s. Brandon Boyd has such an incredible vocal performance in that song.

@@jakedixon6360 actually the same for me. It was in a PlayStation game. I think it was test drive off road 1 or 2. I found out what the song was and bought science. Though I can say I became a huge super fan was until make yourself. Now that could be timing. Make yourself came out when I was in high school along with marijuana. That 3 album run of science to morning view is hard to beat. Once dirk left the band they lost something. No offense to Ben Kinney. He’s an amazing musician but it just wasn’t the right fit in my opinion. Crow left of the murder was the last album of theirs I bought

I knew she was hooked when she did her first video of Incubus. You could see her starting to fall, especially for Brandon. 😂 I know that giddiness firsthand. She is 19 yr old me in 2000. 😍

Totally agree with the "anytime voice" take! His voice is so universal that I find myself listening to them no matter what I feel. It also helps that the other members of the band and their sound have this "universal feel" to them. Also, his live vocal performances sound exactly like the studio albums. His vocal prowess is part of what differentiates them from their contemporaries. It is such a treat to watch them live cause you know you'd be getting your money's worth. They're one of the most underrated bands of their era.

Brandon Boyd is criminally underrated. Incubus busted their asses to remain relevant since the 90s, and I wish that more people were fans.

While FAR from their most popular song/album, the song “If Not Now, When?” is Brandon’s absolute vocal peak. It’s incredible his range, control, and emotion.

The Morning View album is full of great Brandon Boyd vocals. Some of my favorites are.. "11am" "Mexico" and "Aqueous Transmission". Please continue with the Incubus reactions!!! The tunes that sound like synthesizers are indeed guitar effects! Mike Einziger uses a crazy amount of pedal effects and combines them in inusual ways to create that unique Incubus sound.

There's an element of Faith No More's Mike Patton in his voice

One of my favourite songs of theirs is called "Just A Phase", quite underrated... It's an incredible showcase of Brandons vocals, and the band as a whole really shines through. There is a Morning View Sessions perfomance as well :)

I don't exactly know why, but a lot of my friends convinced me that they were just trashy pop rock, and so it took me a few years to actually listen to them myself and was blown away by their rock sound.

Brandon Boyd has been my ANYTIME voice for almost 30 years! Thank you for analyzing this song. Please do more Incubus!

As far as the DJ changing pitch, it can be attained by drifting where he is scratching, he is maintaining the speed back and forth but moving 6-9 o’clock to 8-11 o’clock, as the music on the record has a different pitch on it already. His ability to replicate exactly what he does on the recording, live is wild. He is able to adjust to find the exact spot in a way that is almost unbelievable.

“Sing like a drummer” is such a cool way to describe it. That makes it sound like it should be bombastic until you think about how many different types of sounds can come from drums. Definitely should be explored.

OG Incubus fan here. He signed my Ugg boot. That’s right, I was a 2000’s college kid and I had Ugg boots. 😂 Also got a tattoo of the twin koi (off the Morning View CD-rom) fish with my bestie. Only have two tattoos in my 38-year old body and one of them is Incubus.

I remember listening to this album for an entire year. Make Yourself didn't leave my Sony Discman at any point during 2000. Really one of my all-time favorite albums. So many incredible tracks. Pardon Me, Out From Under, Make Yourself, The Warmth, Stellar, Drive...every song feels unique and different. Some days are "Pardon Me" days, other days are "Privilege" days. Feels like there's a song for every mood in that album.

One of my favorite Incubus songs. "Wish you were here," is a really good song too.

Drive is one of my favorite songs by Incubus. I used to use a short little guitar riff from that song as the text alert on my phone back in the day. I also agree that Incubus is a good "anytime" band. Another good "anytime" band for me is A Perfect Circle. Similar in the sense that they aren't too heavy, and have a little bit more of an "easy listening" type vibe.

Brandon Boyd is like a fine wine, has only gotten better with age.

I think what I love most about this band is they sound a lot like the studio recording but in a lot of ways even better live. Shows they don't need to do a lot of correction post and can actually do it live.

Especially this session. Really intimate, as if they're jamming, but still with the power that they have for their bigger shows. Brandon's really clear here, but still distinct from the studio recording.

Warning, Anna Molly, Aqueous Transmission, and Certain Shade of Green are all wonderful tracks from these fellas I think you'd like. Also I'd love to see you get into Blue October some time. Weight of the world live would be great for vocal analysis but honestly you can probably go nuts. A lot of their songs are powerfully emotional so just be prepared for that.

Mike Patton is often overlooked, but an has an incredible voice.

Brandon's voice, speech patterns, annunciations, accent and pitch/tone control remind me of Karen Carpenter. Although, I can hear a "lisp" or some sort of speech difference when Karen speaks (spoke) It seems to me they both pronounce "R's" similarly. I think your analysis validates their underrated greatness.

I've always considered Boyd to have some of the best vocals since guys like Cornell and Vedder. Surprised it's taken you this long to dive into him.

I did a cover vocal warning couple of days ago.

I was blessed to be in high school during the early 2000's and saw them live in their prime and got and still do get goosebumps thinking about. Everyone knew Brandon was a god; Glad to see them get more love

PLEASE do "Drive" from Incubus. I'm not the hugest Incubus fan, being a metal head from birth, but the lyrical content in this song is special to me. It has been, and still is a go to song for me when my depression takes me down to the depths. "Drive" pulls me back up and reminds me that I'm the one that has to "Grab the wheel and Drive!" I'm sincerely curious to hear your "voice" on this song. Whether you know it or not, your "reactions" carry more weight than you might realize... Take that for what it's worth, from 1 headbanger to a spoiledbymetal angel. 😇🤘😁

There is so much to unpack with this band. Going back to 1995 before they were an actual rock band with the fungus amungus album, then that transition to rock album “science”. The entire next 4 albums where every song of the album was amazing (make yourself, morning view, light grenades and a crow left of the murder). They have 4 albums after that that still have some really good songs on it as well. If you continued with this band, i would go with songs like love hurts, dig, talk shows on mute, or summer romance.

I've been waiting for this one. Also, this won't be a popular opinion but I'd love a reaction to "Aqueous Transmission" by Incubus. It's my go to relaxing song.

While it is true that Incubus has an amazing discography, I feel most people overlook Stellar. Such a superb example of Brandon’s vocal flexibility.

I’ve been listening to Incubus for years but looked at it differently only after your video. Thank you for making me realise how the whole band is super precise here. It’s not only Brandon but every band member doing lots of small things that contribute to the overall sound. Makes you realise how details is everything!

He raps with a melody and I just love this song, it's a masterpiece :) Excellent evaluation Elizabeth!

​Just saw them in concert and they havent lost a step. If you want to hear some great vocals by Brandon I suggest Warning or Drive. Also, Badflower opened for them. Suggest you check them out.

Warning and Drive are two of his least impressive vocal performances… So many better picks than that.

I wonder if you've noticed the unique way Brandon works with the mic. It's not that noticeable throughout most of the song due to the camera angle, but it's very visible in the last chorus. Just watch how he moves the mic to and away from his mouth with each note he sings and the precision of these movements - he knows EXACTLY where to place the mic to best fit each sound and pitch in order to avoid drops and spikes in volume. This is basically manual sound compression, and although many singers do it to an extent depending on a certain microphone type, I've never seen anyone do it with such calculated precision. I very much recommend watching their live performance of the song "Rogues" where Brandon's vocals and mic technique are on full display.

To answer your question about Chris Kilmore's turntable work...The pitch changes in the sounds a turntable makes actually comes from straight from the record a turntablist (different than a DJ) chooses. A turntablist will choose a record based on the different sounds on it, whether it be vocals or instrument sounds. They will then manipulate those sounds using a combination of the slider on their mixer and hand motions directly on the record. The sounds can also be further manipulated by the different EQ knobs on the mixer, as well as the speed of the record, but that is beyond the scope of your question. They essentially isolate a particular section of a record, mess around with how they want it play back, and then practice those motions...A LOT!!! Chris Kilmore is absolutely one of the best!!! I've been an incubus fan for almost 30 years. Never get tired of listening to them. It would be worth deep-diving into each member to realize how good they are at their particular instrument/expertise. Waitiuntil you listen to later Incubus records with Ben Kenney as bassist.

If there is time for another Incubus Song in the future, The Warmth is a masterpiece.

While working in a recording studio around 2012 came across a DVD of Incubus. They were traveling to different countries and playing with local musicians from the area. What a truly amazing band, so adaptable and present in each moment. Don't know what it was called, just exceptional music. Big fan of the group at seventy years old.

Incubus and Boyd are still in my top 5 bands for their genre. Morning View and Make Yourself are TIMELESS masterpieces. Another one of my favorite songs of Incubus is "Dig". Great vvocals there too!

Make Yourself and A Crow Left Of The Murder are two of my favorite albums. I feel like I rediscover how good Incubus is every 5 years or so.

Hundreds of hours of my life have been spent listening to incubus! These guys inspired me to get into playing music in jr high. Brandons lyrics are so underrated, one of the best writers.

the list of song from Incubus that everyone should listen to can be summarized as "all their songs" I still remember in high school (in 2000) I just got my first MiniDisc player and a friend gave me a "non copied totally legal" version of their album S.C.I.E.N.C.E, that was a really a defining moment for to take this musical rollercoaster. Each album brings another layer of how music can make us feel emotions. I don't know how to sing and I feel ashamed when I do, the only song I learned I sung to someone is Drive which is the song making me feel all the love I have for my wife who helped me be the better version of myself. And also I asked that when I die "Pardon me" should be played when I'm being incinerated

if you haven't checked it out already, the vocals in Mexico by Incubus are simply amazing.

Watching you nerd out while reacting to Brandon Boyd really threw me back to how I felt when I first heard them and watching them live. Such a fun trip down memory lane 😊

Incubus doesn't get the credit or praise they deserve. I really enjoy their music

The thing with Incubus is, almost no record sounds like the one before and you would have no problem doing an interesting video on every song. They are just that good!

You should give Time Lapse Consortium “Green” it’s the band from Incubus with an orchestra, but when they cover green Brandon comes out and sings. It’s amazing.

If you haven't heard "Circles" yet, you're in for a complete treat. I love your videos and analysis, it has really made me appreciate the art of composition more and how to truly enjoy the music. Also, how well a quality pair of headphones can change things and really make one hear the subtle things in the composition which make the music even greater. For that, thank You.

Brandon Boyd is such a talented soul. Oh and his ballads.... Swoon. 🤤😌 Stellar and I Miss You are my faves. ❤️Full band mode is great but the acoustic versions are so sweet. Brandon is one of my anytime voices. So is Corvyx who you should DEFINITELY check out. His vocals will get ya in your feels!

You describing Boyd's voice as an "anytime voice" makes my day. The album this is from, Make Yourself, is my absolute favorite album. I could listen to it every day, yet only be able to critique it regarding how it fit into my life at the time. This is my second-favorite song, after "The Warmth," also in The Morning View Sessions. While the whole album is a gem, maybe check that out? Also, if you like the turntable work here, please, if only in your own time, listen to "Battlestar Scralatchtica." Not a lot of vocals, but worth a listen!

Incubus is definitely an anytime band for me and has been since I heard "Drive" in the early 2000s. The video for it is cool, too. You should analyze it next. I'm pretty sure you'll love it.

As a guitar player, Ive always loved mike for delivering truly ground breaking guitar tones and techniques, and I always could sort of understand what was going on. But for Brandon I never could capture what technically makes him truly remarkable and youve nailed it with the diction, breath placement, etc. Thanks for this video for one of my fav bands!

That was Mike Einziger creating one of his 'swells', proving he is not just into metal style power chords (chorus) but he takes the role of a keyboardist as well. His playing is as unique as Brandon's singing is. And not to forget the splendid rhythm guys on bass and drums. This song is capturing at once, but also genius when you look at the details. For me criteria of good music regardless of style.

Mikes got such versatility to do metal riffs, funk riffs, and things you never even thought LOL. Truly a worldclass band from top to bottom talent all over the place!

love the "any time voice" designation. it sounds way less double-edged than when people say a voice is commercial or for everybody.

We may not always know why things are special, but we can feel it. Incubus was one of the best live shows I've ever been to. Sounded almost exactly like the album, obviously not a backing track, incredible show, such unique styles of playing and singing.

You’re absolutely right. I saw them in 2001 after morning view came out. That still one of the best shows I’ve been to. But it was the first show from a major band I had been to. It ruined me for a bit. I thought everyone sounded like shit after that. After a few shows I realized imcubus was just the exception

Incubus is definitely my anytime band as a whole! Their music can mirror, and bring balance to whatever mood I am going through.
