The reason for the tarps is to eliminate the possibility of shrapnel injuring/killing an onlooker or worker in the off chance they found their way into the blasting zone at TOD.

That's just awful that 42 people unexpectedly lost their lives on that bridge in Italy back in 2018. It just goes to show how quickly a day can turn to tragedy in the blink of an eye. My wife just left for work and I made sure to give her a big hug and tell her how much I love her. Go tell your loved ones how much you care for them. You never know when they could randomly be eaten by a bear or something...

The Chinese bridge would have been covered with tarps to prevent fist-sized pieces of rubble from being flung into the watching crowd. During my explosives handling training, I had first-hand observation of how far potentially lethal rocks can travel. I also witnessed another poorly managed demolition which resulted in fatalities because of the lack of shrapnel barriers.

Could be blast mats underneath the tarps, which are used to contain larger fragments. These are made from woven cables like making a coarse cloth from rope, and weigh a few tons. I watched one of these jump as high as a house when they blasted a blue granite boulder underneath it. It rained dirt for about 10 seconds afterward...

The Liberty Memorial Bridge was done in two parts, about a month apart. I believe the date that was mentioned was when the western-most section was demolished. The middle and east portions were done together about a week before Election Day because I remember a plane flying a political banner over the area while I was waiting to see it happen about a mile north of it from the Bismarck State College campus.

Your timeline of the Fulton bridge is reversed. The faulty wiring caused the demo crew to only be able to knock down the single span over the tracks on the first day. That span had to come down that day no matter what, because of the railroad right-of-way. The remainder of the bridge, shown in your video, was taken down a week later. Here's the first, partial demolition, after hours of delays. kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZWqYptaJdZOoqdo.html

In the mid-70s I was transferred to the Pittsburgh Pennsylvania area. While watching the news one evening in Pittsburgh, they were going to blow up the bridge that was deemed unsafe. The new bridge was built right next to the old one, and at 5 o’clock they were going to detonate charges to drop the bridge into the river. Right on time the detonation went off and when the smoke cleared the damn bridge it was still there, it’s not a dam bridge. It’s a bridge that those fools said was unsafe, and they tried to blow it up with dynamite and that sure didn’t work.

Not at all. First, I think the new Tappan Zee bridge looks pretty neat. But it also comes down to cost and technology. A big arch truss bridge does look cool, but if it can be replaced by a modern beam bridge, that's probably both less expensive and safer in the long run; easier to inspect and maintain. Infrastructure's too expensive to maintain a lot of it purely as art, and big bridges are some of the most expensive single pieces of infrastructure out there.

Why can't we keep the old-if still in good enough condition- as a secondary route for when there's excessive traffic, or just for those who wish to use it as an aesthetic path?

If you notice the trusses are cut into sections by the explosives. You'll also notice in a lot of those the trees visible are mostly bare as these demolitions are usually done in fall or early spring before barge and ship traffic picks up. Effectively the sections are barged up or down river to be cut up for scrap as to leave the bridge there it would interfere with navigation.
