Actually, the Opera House in the lounge is there for a specific reason: Air Austral used to fly to Sydney from Reunion until 2012 in a failed and very expensive plan to be a connecting carrier between Europe and Australia. Great video as always!

Ouch! Thanks for the fact though!

Their flights were very cheap I believe. Plenty of Sydneysiders with a random Reunion stamp in their passport because of it on their way for European travels.

Not only to Australia, their plan was to fly to Australia and continue then to New Caledonia, another French territory in the pacific, much more remote and far away than reunion. The only way to go there is to fly through Tokyo through Air France and Aircalin. Their plan was to provide an alternative and cheaper itinerary, but not less long. They used a Boeing 777-200LR for that one. It lasted a short time and eventually failed miserably, leaving the monopoly to Aircalin to serve New Caledonia…

Indeed. It's a shame the Noumea-Sydney-St Denis- Paris vv route failed. Think it was a combination of wrong aircraft (777), not much promotion and competition on the Sgdney-Paris route via Asia/ME. Had the pleasure of visiting Reunion (and Mauritius) in October 2019. Truly a stunning island. Would happily go back but for the connectivity issue from Oceania. As an aside I really do like Aircalin especially their A330-900s. And now they are flying to Singapore, they just need to be a bit more strategic and coordinate connection flight from NZ to their Singapore flight ( and to Tokyo) and they could be great competition to Singapore, Air NZ and also Qantas etc. Last but not least, I read somewhere that Corsair might be in negotiations to acquire Air Austral as its in financial difficulty post pandemic. Could be a good outcome for Air Austral's future. Bon chance!

@@Paul_Lucas I always love your video they are always fun to watch
Did the IFE say 777-300ER? Had to check the video title!
Kai Tak approach and landing in a 747, sitting in an alpha seat-nothing more spectacular. (Too bad if you never got to experience it). For seaside, Kona, Hawaii works, also the reef runway at HNL. Btw Paul, I really enjoy your videos, especially the trains.
I flew on Air Austral a few years back. Mauritius to Reunion (ATR 72), Mauritius to Bangkok (777), Bangkok to Reunion (787) and Reunion to Mauritius (737). That must be just about their entire fleet. All in Economy which was perfectly adequate. Two airports which stick in my mind are Lijiang in China and Srinagar in Kashmir, particularly the takeoff. Thanks for your channel.
Excellent video Paul!😸
Nice one. Thanks for the video Mate 👍
Amazing and unique video. Beautiful landing.
Great video. Thanks Paul😀💚
This was a lovely flight and a wonderful video.
Top video Paul. You're making me want to get flying again!
Great video as always
Nice coverage
always great to see the smaller unknown carrier!

Most spectacular for me has to be SXM - such a unique airport! Thanks for the great video, looking forward to the next.
Fab video! Don't see a lot of these flights. A Seychelles island hopper could be interesting too!

Glad you enjoyed it! Now, to get to the Seychelles....maybe next year!
Great video!
Another excellent trip report Paul - really enjoyed it. Most spectacular place I’ve ever landed - Skiathos - Greek Islands.
Fabulous video Paul! Excellent work as always and on a Beautiful Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner from Réunion! 😊 Also at 1:41 the name austral is the same as like the Aurora Australis the “southern lights” because of the southern hemisphere! Did you know that? Also at 6:43 I love how the safety video on the B787-8 says “welcome onboard the B777-300ER”!? 😅 That’s not quite right safety video… Also the most spectacular place I’ve ever landed 🛬 was probably Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) in Anchorage Alaska 🇺🇸 The mountains & scenery were just stunning and the water and coastline view were very pretty it was an awesome sight 👏 🤩 🎉
Air Austral used to fly non stop to Sydney with an onward flight to Noumea hence the Opera house poster
Great video. You are still the best plane/train/travel vlogger on KZread by far!
I agree with Paul Marti, Kai Tak back in the 70's , fly between the mountains and the houses (with their washing out the window!) then land next to the sea just meters away , shows you how old Paul and I are! Philltheflyer
Loved the video the airport was great. Can't wait for the new video thanks Paul.
Great video
Great video, Paul - hope you were able to spend some time at these places too! Best places to land at? For me, there’s 3 (or maybe 4) - Malé airport in the Maldives - bonkers approach across the sea with the islands scattered around. - Gibraltar because it’s awesome (especially if you are on the side of the rock!) - Bern airport - I flew into here on a Bae 146 when I was a kid (Dan-air I think!) and that’s a great approach through the hills around Bern. - special mention to the air strip near governor’s camp in the Masai Mara - when we were landing on our honeymoon, the pilot had to fly low over the airstrip to scare off a family of giraffe that were on the runway!
I'm really glad you covered this Airline which I've always been curious about ...but I wish there was more commentary on the cabin crew service
I'm so jealous. ..... Another great video.
I Have not fly whit Air Austral yet.Great work
Keep up the good work
Think Geneva from the flight deck of a BA 737-200 when I was 13 (a long time ago now!) was cool- and london Heathrow was great last Monday morning, stunning views of London not once but twice as we had my first go around!
Great vlog as always! I need to visit the southern Indian ocean. HAF is cool place to visit. Fly in, have lunch, and fly out. Then you see all what is to see in the greater SFO area. Keep up the good work. Be safe!
Paul fun vlog as always The boarding walk was like arrivals in Toronto canada t3
I love to see exotic airlines
Paul, Love the out of the way places and planes! CHeers, Rik Spector
Nice video, always enjoy learning about these airlines and destinations. As for scenic landings Naha, Okinawa is a top contender!
Aitutaki in the Cook Islands on a Saab 340 is spectacular for the lagoon.
I'm from Sydney Australia also like Dennis bunnick trip reports I am such an av geek always at botany bay watching the big guys landing can't wait to fly again and landing at Heathrow
Another great video Paul ! Any chance you can video these beautiful islands you visit ? I’d love to see some of these great places you visit outside the airports. Cheers Jim
Inverness is the most spectacular place i've landed - its home so I'm biased but coming up loch ness or the moray firth looking over to the black isle is always special! Lanzarote is pretty cool too!
Wonderful content.🙂
liked the fact the inflight entertainment was thinking it was a 777-300ER 😆
Paul, what an excellent video definitely my sort of place to visit .... Oh ,Madeira and on short finals the pilot decides to go around because a steam roller drives onto the runway !!! all good fun...
Fun fact about quick flight meal service. I used to fly regularly between Melbourne and Sydney in the 80s for business. The early flight had a full breakfast with coffee On a 767. Less than an hour fights. They could hustle.
Air austral used to fly to Sydney.... they stopped about 10 years ago.... they flew to noumea via sydney😊
Most of the time, Air Austral B777-300ER and B787-800 are flying long haul flights by night. RUN-CDG, CDG-RUN, RUN-BKK (night), BKK-RUN (day), DZA-(NBO)-CDG (NBO stop during summer, direct DZA-CDG during winter), CDG-DZA-RUN (last leg by day). But during the day, Dreamliner may fly RUN-DZA-RUN. The home base for the crew is mostly RUN. A few are based in CDG. Air France is both a competitor and a partner as there is a code-share agreement. You may fly Air Austral on CDG-RUN-CDG with an Air France ticket 😋
I was in the same flight!!! Sitting 1A on the other side!!!
what a good video keep u the good work.
3:18 Schengen Style passport stamps, but not Schengen Style, if you know what I mean, the diamond shape is a little reminiscent of the old pre-Schengen French stamps, thanks for sharing Paul, always great to look back at a passport.
Interesting! 👍
As an Army captain flying a UH-1H in Vietnam out to the mountains on the Laotian border in 1971, I had to make the sort of landing where you hold the helicopter's right landing skid hard against the mountain's up hill slope. You hold that position so the infantry squad of 12 long range patrol grunts (LLRPs) and their dog can get off. Keep it right there when the squad returning to base gets onboard. It's really hot in August so sweat rolls down, stinging your eyes and the constant dog farts make you want to barf. But you've got to keep looking straight ahead and keep the hovering aircraft rock steady despite the weight changes. Luckily, we didn't catch any small arms fire so it was a routine, if taxing, landing. Without the dog farts it wouldn't be worth mentioning. Great scenery when you have time to look.

Nice video
Most spectacular - Kai Tak
Recently flew internationally for the first time in prob2 decades, was worried about lost luggage so invested in Smart tags as I’m not an apple fan lol. Things were so great I forgot to look at the app. British Airways WTP our bass we’re waiting on the carousel by the time we disembarked. Had an incredible experience with BA both ways. Maybe it’s because I’ve only flown domestic easyJet and Ryanair over the last 10 or so years, I has forgotten what to expect. But het the double tier points are welcome lol
My favorite landing is a night landing at Chicago Ohare coming in from the east coming over Lake Michigan an low over downtown Chicago. But of course that was in the early 80s I’m not sure that it’s allowed to go that low over Chicago.
Nice vlog 👍👍👍👍
Strange to see so many birds flying around inside the terminal
Didn't Argentina used to have an Air Austral? Great video Paul! Air Austral looks like it provides quite good service for a leisure-heavy airline. I'd be interested to see what their long-haul economy class is like. The most spectacular landing I've been on was to Hilo (ITO) on the Big Island of Hawaii. As you approach the airport you see Mauna Kea on the starboard side (and Mauna Loa further beyond) and Hilo Bay on the port. As Mauna Kea is only about 25-30 miles from the airport it looks humongous. The scenery is beautiful.

Yes, I thought I'd heard the name before. Acording to Wiki, Austral was indeed an Argentinian airline though its official title was Austral Lineas Aereas. It ceased to exist in 2020 when it was absorbed into Aerolineas Argentinas.

Start the video at 6:42 and immediately press Pause and read the information on the seat-back screen. It is for a Boeing 777-300 ER! I hope you made a note of the exits by looking rather than relying on what Air Austral were showing you!
The most spectacular place I've landed at? Easy. Male, Maldives. We were lucky enough to come in from the south. Sitting on the left side of the Emirates 777 I had a perfect view of Male, which is like a miniature Manhattan, rising out of the ocean in the middle of nowhere. The last 30 minutes before landing featured spectacular scenery of small islands, reefs and sandbars.

I quite agree - absolutely stunning approach and before they extended the runway, it was a very rapid stop!
The best approach and landing that I have ever had is into the Maldives on an Emirates 777....
Oh and most spectacular place I've landed, Well Jersey on a Summer Morning.
What a cool little airline. The food looked really good! And those views were wonderful too. It's funny you mention ticking off airlines and airports. I'm a roadgeek, so I prefer clinching highways, but I guess airports and airlines would be the av-geek versions, right?
Queenstown has to be the most spectacular place I have landed at.
You should fly into another French territory off the coast of Newfoundland, St. Pierre & Miquelon. It is a very interesting area, some lovely little hotels. Just a thought. Love your videos.
Most beautiful landing is in queenstown new zealand, wow
That's so unbelievable, you are thousands of kilometers away from Europe but still in France 😁😁 I really have to visit some of these beautiful islands soon 🙂

I would say Antigua was most impressive approach for me,😊😊
I (sorry) 😊 have watched another travel vlogger . He was doing a trip and part of it was on British Airways . I remember your distain of BAW and his adventure was just as lousy as yours . In fact I said to myself Paul said NOT to use BAW and you were correct . Not only did the flight suck so did the food . Thanks for your advance advice on what airline to use .
Bonjour hello i am a regular viewver of your channel whonleave in Réunion island thanks to come here and try our island main carrier airplane company! Y need to tryptophane Madagascar comoros islands Seychelles Rodrigue....to discuter all indian ocean islands! Thanks for your job!
Spectacular landings: Barra, Vancouver Harbour, Ganges Harbour, Sydney and not to be outdone, Heathrow when they are on 27L or R.
Please don’t replace voiceover with subtitles. So many KZreadrs use subtitles because they don’t have the confidence to talk. But people with visual impairments rely on the VO and people with hearing impairment rely on the subtitles. There is a happy medium somewhere.

Good evening Paul. Can I just say from the very beginning I love watching your videos that’s why I describe to your channel so every time you put one up I watch it. Can I ask you will you do a journey from Manchester to Orlando Florida I virgin. And from Manchester to Orlando Florida by tui as I’m going to Disney in 2024 and can’t make my mind up which company to go with I only travel premium economy. I look forward to your next video I can’t wait to see where you go to next thank you Paul and I’ll keep watching. Paul can I ask you something have you ever done a video where the weather has been really bad and it’s been caught on camera
So, what you are saying, Paul... Is that instead of a " loo with a view"... It's a " Loo with a view !" 🤣
Interesting Paul - little piece of the world seldom covered. Useless information - in another life I lived in North Queensland, where the house we had built was designed and built by a building company headquartered on Reunion.
Where was the message when you tapped the plane?
I heard the Bing but no caption this time ?
1:13 "pilot in training"?
👍👍👍
Spectacular landing, I live in NYC, so a night landing here is always spectacular. But away from home, Sydney, we approached from the north and passed the Harbor Bridge, the CBD and it was a great overflight of the whole city down to Kingsford Airport. San Diego was spectacular, but slightly unnerving since we passed very close to a lot of things!
Paul, you must hate Changi and KLIA1 if you do not like fountains. They're everywhere there.
On the topic of French territories, a soccer team from mainland France had to trek all the way to Tahiti this weekend for a domestic competition. Let’s feel so sorry for these gentlemen 😂

Mayotte and Reunion maintain their own border controls. Mayotte is a particular hotspot for illegal migration due to its geographic location and that it is both in France proper and the EU.
Looks a nice enough product - really different to what I’ve seen on the Middle Eastern lines recently. First world problem, but those champagne glasses are horrid - what are they thinking?!
Hi Paul, I have recently started following you and I have noticed one common thing which you always do whilst entering the plane, you always tend to touch the door before boarding the plane. Why do you do so if you mind telling us please?
Is that a 787 or 777? TV monitor says 777.
