I worked with a teacher who found out that she had breast cancer in the fall of 2020 when we were doing simultaneous teaching. She went to the principal and asked if while she was getting treatment (and it wasn’t recommended for her to be around students) if a sub could be in the classroom with her students that were in person. Then she would just teach online from home and have it streamed into the classroom so she could still teach all of her students at the same time. My principal looked her in the eyes and told her she could take an unpaid leave of absence, because she wasn’t going to pay for a substitute to sit in the class with her students if she could still teach. The teacher even offered to pay for the substitute out-of-pocket and the principal said that was against school board policy. So a bunch of us teachers offered to watch her class every day on our planning periods (for free) so she could still work from home and teach and get paid.

It's awful that she had to go through that, but so great that y'all did that for her!

Yea, How horribly sad 😢 that Admin couldn't even support her during her cancer treatment 😮 You wonder why it's popular for Teachers to teach online now 😊 It's wonderful to have co-workers that really help & care about other teachers who need help🥰 I'm sure she really appreciates your help 😊

I don't know if I could trust that person as a principal. Great on the rest of you for being such great humans.

Hi crew! Can you do an episode with retired teachers? Was their retirement plan what they thought it would be? Thanks 😊

As a substitute one day I was placed in a really rough class and that day they had a food truck at the school for lunch. And the Assistant Principal offered to buy me lunch because she knew how the kids were in that class. It was a really sweet offer.

My parents both work at the school I graduated from! They got a new principal not long after I graduated and he is incredible! Every day he goes on the intercom during morning announcements and reminds the students that even if no one has told them lately that they’re loved and valued! He also often lets teachers and staff leave early for simple reasons such as it’s a nice day so go home early and enjoy the nice weather! My mom taught for over 30 years and my dad for over 20 and they both agree he’s one of the best principals out there!

Custodian for a week in US is exceptional. Japanese school children, administrators, principals keep the buildings and grounds clean themselves.

I was blessed to work under some of the best administrators ever. We felt safe going to them with problems, they were part of the team and the staff were willing to do whatever they asked because we worked like a family. It was wonderful! Then our Superintendent retired and chose the wrong replacement. It all went to hell and within 5 or so years any of the teachers who could left. It was terribly sad!

I am finally very blessed in the school district I now teach in. He & our AP are AMAZING!!!!! They treat everyone as educated adults that know how to do their jobs. They never make any staff member feel inferior, unimportant, or as if their ideas don't matter. I agree w/ you Brit! I've been at the other end of the spectrum w/ administration for 11yrs that's bullied staff, disrespect them, make them feel like they don't matter & nothing you do is not good enough, etc. Changing to a different school district 2yrs ago w/ such an amazing administration is such a breath of fresh air! I feel so happy going to work everyday & doing what I love. A wonderful administration makes a HUGE difference in how you feel about going to your classroom each day! I don't have 1 bad thing to say about either of my admin. & know that I matter just as much as our students & their families! They make you feel as if you are a part of their family! I'm so happy knowing what I have now, compared to the various admins. in the other school district I taught in. I definitely have PTSD!

I’m graduating next year and will start teaching next year hopefully and have been working as an educational assistant when I can. I’m supremely grateful to be teaching in Canada because of how tough I know our American counterparts have it. That being said, I’m aware the job is still tough and we still have our struggles. Anyways, listening to this podcast makes me feel more relaxed and excited to get in there with the kids! So many teachers are burned out and have stopped laughing and smiling which makes me nervous but this podcast makes me feel more prepared and more optimistic (even when y’all are reading crazy stories haha)

We had a principal in our k-7 school that, during an assembly, as a reward for something or idk what, she let the kids duct tape her to the wall. She stood on a bench against the wall and every kid got to place a long piece of tape and at the end they pulled the bench away and sure enough she was stuck lol

I went to high school in a low income city area. I loved my high school principals. We had one for each grade, so 4 principals. And they stayed through my entire four years and we’d move up to the next person each year. Necessary for the amount of discipline we needed daily. But they ALWAYS sat with us at lunch, walked around the school and hung out with us, we could walk into the office and say I’d like to speak with Mr Amen and they legit counseled us in that moment, fed us and had cabinets full of granola bars. I could walk in and say hey man I’m about to flip my lid on so an so and I could sit in his office until I was calm. They’d be there after school until sports left after practice so 5/6pm. Makes me wonder if the teachers had the same prospective as us students did. We still respected them, they felt like second parents.

I had a teacher that wore the same pants every day (not making fun). Kids knew this because one kid took a permanent marker and put a dot on his pants leg.

That's where fabuloso come from. It started in the family dollar, and people liked the smell. You couldn't pay me to clean with that. It's only worth boiling on the stove as air freshener.
