INCOME REQUIREMENT FOR CANADIAN SPOUSAL (AND OTHER FAMILY) SPONSORSHIP APPLICATIONS

It is a common misconception that there is a specific income requirement to be able to sponsor your spouse to Canada.
While you must meet a concrete requirement to sponsor almost any other family member, there is no such income requirement at all for spousal sponsorship applications.
The financial requirements for spousal sponsorship include:
You must not be receiving welfare benefits from any province.
You must not be in bankruptcy proceedings, and previous bankruptcy claim must have been discharged
Both of these requirements must be met at the time you submit your spousal sponsorship application, but there is no specific length of time you need to wait before you can send the application in. In other words, you can submit your spousal sponsorship application the day after you stop receiving welfare benefits or your bankruptcy is discharged.
However, if you are receiving Employment Insurance benefits (unemployment) or disability benefits, you may still sponsor your spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner as these benefits do not count as welfare.
In order to make the ability to sponsor your spouse accessible to people at all income levels, IRCC does not require that applicants earn any certain amount of money. They are also comparatively lenient about this requirement, as previous bankruptcy or receipt of welfare benefits do not normally reflect poorly on an application.
Parental Sponsorship Income Requirement
Parental and Grandparental sponsorship applications do carry a Minimum Income Requirement based upon the number of people in your family. This includes
Yourself and your family members, even if they do not live with you
The person you are sponsoring and his/her family members who will be living with you
Anyone you have sponsored in the past and their family members
Anyone you have co-signed a sponsorship financial obligation for in the past
Anyone the person you are sponsoring has sponsored or has co-signed a sponsorship financial obligation for in the past
For parental and grandparental sponsorship applications there is a Low Income Cutoff (LICO) to ensure that you will be able to financially support your family members after they arrive in Canada.
Child Sponsorship Income Requirement
If you are sponsoring your child who has no children of their own, there is no income requirement to sponsor them.
However, if your child has children of their own, you must meet the income requirement above to sponsor them.
Sponsorship Application Financial Obligation
As a sponsor, you are undertaking certain obligations for the welfare of the person you are sponsoring. This includes caring for them financially for the necessary period of time as directed by the government. This period of time depends on the type of sponsorship application you are filing.
If you sponsor someone and they receive welfare benefits from the government, you as the sponsor are financially liable for paying back those benefits.
Have you been affected by the financial obligations of a sponsorship application?

I'm a refugee claimant for 6 years , I got marriage 2 years ago with a Canadian citizen , my husband sponsored me , we send the application 14 months ago , everything is ready include medical examination . In November I called immigration and they told me in the end of December should I have the answer , now the said to me I have to wait , becouse is to many cases waiting for answer . My question is , why take so long if everything is ready in I have any problem with my documents , we are working paying taxes , also have life all ready in Canada for 6 years ? I'm a wife of Canadian citizen in every way I go the people treat me like , a refugee claimant .I have not health card and my social insurance number is still with 9 , which is very hard to find a doctor and a normal job . I think is not fear because , is not my fault if immigration of Canada not make a decision in regards to my refugee claimant for more than six years , we are thinking is becouse I'm from Colombian and Catholic .

Hi, I'm sorry to say we can't comment on specific cases already in process, as the decision is up to the officer. If you cannot get enough information by calling them or online, you can always try an Access to Information Request to see the notes on your file, but you might not get that before your application is approved.

Why are you so desperate to live in Canada? Marriage is the way refugees and other illegals seek way to citizenship. We don't want no more immigrants in our country. Canada is already full of desperate immigrants. GO HOME!

Marriage isn't a pathway to citizenship; spouses can only be sponsored for permanent residence. Also, there are rules about sponsorship which you didn't bother to look up before you posted because why know what you're talking about when you post on KZread? www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/immigrate-canada/family-sponsorship/spouse-partner-children/eligibility.html

78MONINA i think he’s frustrated over the taxes he pays and all the scammers he sees all over Toronto and other places . My parents are immigrants and let me tell you this , even they agree the sneakiest , biggest liars and scammers are all immigrants, cause Canadian people don’t have that viciousness in them . So before you judge him , look at it from his point of view . Maybe he’s had super bad experiences with immigrants. In case you didn’t notice they aren’t exactly the easiest people to get along with . By the way , my future wife in the picture will be an immigrant in case you try to use the racist card on me ! In closing , I work a retail job and take a guess who gives me the hardest time at work ? I think you figured it out already , non grateful refugees and immigrants who are using Canada’s niceness amd scamming as much free money as they can out of the medical system and welfare . So don’t you dare call him ignorant , You’re ignorant !

My girlfriend and I are both currently students, and she is going to sponsor me as her common law partner. We plan on explaining that my parents are the one's who will continue to financially support me as they did last year, I will use the money I make as a tree planter in the summer, combined with the part-time work I have during the school year to be financially independent. My girlfriends parents have also offered to support me if I run into financial difficulty, and have provided income statements. Do you think the Immigration Officers will accept this?

Hi Rowan, There's no way to say definitively as it is entirely up to their discretion. We would suggest compiling all of this information to show that your girlfriend has multiple ways of supporting you financially in addition to money you will contribute both through your tree planting and through your parents. The more you can document this, the better off you'll be.

@@viraltv7597 Well, it could but it doesn't make you ineligible. As some point the person reviewing your file is going to try to figure out whether or not you can support your partner. And with no income, their answer would likely be "No".

    #### THIS IS TO BE KNOWN TO EVERYONE YET ALL , FAMILY MEMEBERS, IMMIGRATNTS COMING TO CANADA too. Movies on you tube will follow soon####. I am married 6 YEARS to my Chinese wife did not even get visitors visa, not mentioning sponsorship failed including appeal. Your Canada system is the worst I ever would imagine anyways. You encourage people to travel and marry foreigners then you sloter us by denying even visitors visa. YOUR SYSTEM IS NOT GOOD.. NOT GOOD!!!!!! AND FAILED VERY BABLY. Now you all blame Trudeau, I do not because in reality is you the people the Canadian immigration administration, judges and ministers who created the stupid nonsense immigration rules that creates Canada the worst country in the World in family reunion.
