Income & Expenses of a Junior Doctor | Real-terms Pay Cut for Doctors?
In this video, I share how much money I earned as a foundation doctor over the last 2 years since graduating from medical school and what an F1/F2 rota looks like. More importantly, the DDRB recently announced a 4.5% uplift for all NHS staff, except for junior doctors (from FY1 out of medical school to senior registrars) due to a previously agreed multi-year pay deal, ignoring the recommendations from the BMA to consider real-terms 26.7% pay cut over the last 15 years and evidence of increasing burnout amongst doctors in the NHS. A doctor today is NOT worth a third less than a doctor from 15 years ago.
If you're a doctor in the UK, I urge you to join (or rejoin) the BMA doctors' union (free until October) to support ongoing efforts for FULL PAY RESTORATION for junior doctors.

Completely accurate. F1 doctor here and my family were shocked at my pay. It’s ridiculous considering how hard we work

Pay restoration now!
Great Video :)
as a caribbean junior doctor we get paid the equivalent of 17,687 pounds but we work 100+ hour work weeks and all call shifts are 24hrs 8-8 but youre still expected to work the full workday 8-4 so it ends up cracking a 30hr workday most call days

thats the salary for the entire year, im writing plab and mrcp, the uk salaries and work hours and quality of living are amazing to me
I heard that the waitress get payed more per hour than the doctors in Britain...
Wow, you are exceptional. No f2 will fork out their own money doing all those course, exams, conferences. Most would not bother and take an f3 year. Please claim all those expenses back from HMRC.

Agree with your comment lots of these are not “mandatory” spending as an F2; but as I mentioned things like the BSS, ATLS, exams all contribute to applying to CST so how much of a “choice” is it really?! (how fair that is and whether it promotes a pay-to-win culture is another topic…) As someone on a visa (I’m not exactly an IMG as went to med school in UK) I was also not willing to risk not being on training as this would mean I would struggle to find a sponsor for my visa for the next few years. So unfortunately it did mean I had to work extra hard to ensure I get a post. Will definitely claim back from HMRC haha

At the current competition ratio of specialty application, those who will realistically get a job are most likely the ones who committed early on in 5th year or Fy1. If you could look at the CST application portfolio handbook at FY2, to get the bare minimum to get an invitation to submit evidence, you will need at least f3/f4 to barely cross the line to get an interview. The irony thing is you have to use your fy3/4 pay to go for extra courses/exams to score points.

My husband didn’t get anything back from HMRC! They are only interested in taxing, nothing more. Now as a consultant his take home pay is £4350😢What’s the point of working in the NHS?? Just wasting your life and time!

Too low. US pays them 3-4x more. Friend in UK has mathematics degree and Masters in financial mathematics but makes about £110k after only 3 years since graduation

You have to be clever to do a maths degree and a Masters in financial maths.
I’m so shocked at the lack of funding for essential courses and exams!
It’s better to be a CA or a Finance executive! Being a doctor in England is a thankless job! Minuscule pay, no free time, long working hours, lots of stress, unhealthy food in the hospital cafes, and the resulting ill health from it all. Not worth it!
My husband didn’t get anything back from HMRC for the numerous courses that he attended and they all cost a whack! HMRC is only interested in taxing doctors, nothing more. Now as a consultant his take home pay is £4350😢What’s the point of working in the NHS?? I don’t see any point in wasting your life and time in this country 😢
Can I ask what study resources cost £1.4k?

See my MRCS part B video - couple of Q banks, books, and a £800 prep course (obviously all optional, but the rationale is it would cost less to go on the course and pass than fail then go on the course and resit).
My god what a joke of a salary...
Hi , I am a international medical graduate, I am doing my final year studies in Ukraine but I haven’t done my internship so if I pass the plab. Will it be difficult for me to get the job as F1 Because of not doing any internship?

No it isn’t. I studied in Ukraine (Kharkov National Medical University), and I’m currently in Foundation training. What you need to do is apply through the UKFPO in June of the year you graduate. You’ll need to write IELTS and get at least 7.5 in each aspect, and later SJT. If you want more info I can give you my email and send all the info you need. Good luck
