Boys, outside of the Inclusivity Bias, this comic is legit one of the worst things I've ever read. No hyperbole, no jokes. This graphic novel is tasteless, obscene, blatantly racist, repulsive, filth, of the highest, highest order-- right next to I am not Starfire and High Guardian Spice, and terrible for almost All of the same reasons... It's glorified propaganda, disguised as a piece of media for teenagers. This comic really does have the exact same vibe of I am not Starfire, in the sense that it just feels like the author, L.L. Mckinney, is just projecting herself onto Nubia, and the narrative that she is making, is constantly twisting around to give her all the fantasy fulfillment she wants. I honestly wish I had gone out of my way to do a full on multi-part review on this, because there is SO much to unpack in this mess of a comic...

Plus there's the fact that this so called woke author has nubia use acts of physical aggression to foil the bad guys twice and more nonviolent (eg the recorder) ways once why not have nubia think of a way to cleverly restrain the robber or have her call her friend on her phone or come over with drinks for her and sit down and pass her one while saying oh hey I got you that drink you wanted at the party and afterwards comfort her friend diana when she was wonder woman used nonviolent ways to restrain and catch criminals all the time

It broke my heart and I let them do it because I hated playing alone. One of their uncles yelled at them for hitting me one day and even oiled my bike chain for me. The thing about racism is that it wrong to treat anyone like you are better than them, not that it’s wrong to treat minorities like that.

Diversifying doesn’t mean stomping on the less marginalized group. If you’re making a female empowerment story, don’t stomp on all the men. If you’re making a black empowerment story, don’t stomp on the white people. It’s just that simple. It makes the story unrealistic. Tell a good story with good characters and good writing. That should be the objective. Not your agenda.

Those stories can and do work well with discriminatory opposition, I just think the main problem with it is just the execution. The Great Ace Attorney duology does a pretty solid job at both fronts, making racism and sexism a pretty prominent topic, without going out of its way to cartoonishly demonize any particular group. I can’t do much of the games justice here, but I just really like the handling of those topics in the story, while also providing some over the top mystery hijinks and goofy characters to follow.

As a black person, you've perfectly identified my own feelings about stuff like this. I joined a community organizer program a few years ago run by entirely black people, and filled with primarily black people. One day we were discussing this annual event in my hometown called the slow roll, where people in other parts of the city tour the entire city by bike, including the "black" side. I always saw this as a good thing, since my hometown is segregated and any opportunity to remedy that should be applauded. But the entire discussion turned into "white people are just passing through OUR neighborhoods to scope out the properties they're planning to steal from us". Everyone is cheering and agreeing with this. The one black girl aside from me who defended the event had participated and was trying to explain to them that everyone she'd ridden with was pleasant and fascinated to see parts of the city they don't normally go to. And they insulted that girl for daring to oppose the narrative. It was straight up bullying. And these were people much older than myself. Needless to say, I stopped doing anything with that group.

My wife gets mocked for liking fantasy based media and joked on for marrying a “vanilla wafer”. Her immediate family barely interact with me, let alone respect me and they live with us. My spouse also has this thing where she thinks it’s not racist to assume that if we visit places that are predominantly white that people are going to hate on us for being a mixed couple. The amount of race humor and the N word that floats around this house is exhausting.

People are allowed to reclaim slurs for themselves that’s not wrong. As a black person I can say the N word all I want as that is a slur used against me that I can reclaim however I cannot reclaim a slur for someone else the same goes for other minorities I’m apart of it’s why I can say I’m a queer person or call myself the f word because you can reclaim a slur even if people outside of that group don’t understand it you should just educate yourself on it because it’s not the same. The not being “black enough” is an issue in our communities I’m glad my folks are coming out of that it’s very harmful to other black peoples mental health I’m proud of my heritage and we do have a culture but culture heritage and stereotypes are different things and there are many ways black peoples can be. It’s such a complex and interesting issue that being said it sucks to feel like an outsider in your family and it’s difficult as well to have your family view you as a race traitor because of who you married. Hopefully old wounds will heal especially as we get further away from racism in America maybe becoming more comfortable in our own skin will help with feeling threatened by others especially with the bad blood the racism here has stirred up. Most racism nowadays comes from a place of ignorance, not hate. And a lot of it even well intentioned. That is, people who tend to fight for “inclusivity” would pull me in and try to convince me any white man can only be bad news, and that my life had been ruined by white people, whether I notice it or not. As a white person who's been to Japan several times, I can tell you that it is absolutely possible to be racist against white people, it just takes a completely different form. In Japan, like...they meant well, I'll say that, but I kept getting special treatment. Like, okay, getting free or discounted stuff is cute at first, but...um...it makes me uncomfortable if the only reason for it is that I'm white. And, yeah, that's white privilege pumped up to eleven, but it wasn't just that. There were repeated times that people reached out to me, wanting to be my friend or talk to me later, only to...um...not? Like, I got the impression that many of them only wanted to "get to know me" was because I was white, and therefore, I was bragging rights to their other friends. The more I go to Japan, the more I feel like they treat me like a porcelain doll--something that's cute to take down and play with every once in a while, but primarily belongs on the shelf. I'm not really so much a "person" as I am a decoration. And it's not just me--watch any Asian Drama with a white person in it, and they almost always just float around in the background with smiles plastered on their faces. Just like porcelain dolls. That being said, I recognize that this is not the worst form of racism out there. Getting free stuff doesn't exactly categorize as "oppression". But it was really weird being surrounded by so many people of the same skin and hair colour that it actually caught me off guard to look in the mirror. It was like "whoa...I'm *white.* " And it was nerve-wracking knowing that every time I spoke, I was representing my entire ethnicity and country. One step out of line and I tarnish someone's opinion of my race forever, and it's like...human beings don't work like that? At all? I dunno. Just gave me a lot of sympathy for minorities and immigrants.

Granted, that incident dates from around 25 years ago but it also showcase a darker side to how they treat outsiders. @@skootergirl22 I also heard that when Japanese look at anime characters, they see them as Asian, not white. So, to us, they look white, but to them, they look Asian. It's only when you start drawing anime characters more realistically, you'll see any distinction between races. Durarara comes to mind. I remember in that show, race was never mentioned until the designated "foreigner" guy showed up. (They specified he was Italian.) And he was drawn to be very distinctly not-Asian. Not in a derogatory way, but the shape of the nose and eyes were totally different. That being said, I noticed a lot in Japan that even on the advertisements for beauty products, they would often show pictures of white people which...didn't seem fair at all. We talk about unrealistic beauty standards here, but Japanese women are somehow expected to change THEIR ENTIRE RACE to be beautiful. ...Yeah. Racism is racism, and it takes a weirdly chilling edge when it's applied to white people overseas...

My family came here with nothing and had to literally prove that they were good enough to be considered “white.” The anti-Italian sentiment in our country is very deeply rooted. I remember being shocked to find out that the largest mass lynching in US history was perpetrated against my own ethnic group in 1890. Fast forward to now and while the violence has mostly receded, the blatant verbal discrimination continues. We’re always asked if we’re mobbed up, portrayed as violent sociopaths, made fun of for our accents, and seen as uneducated slobs. Knowing everything that’s happened to us, it’s disheartening to see us being labeled as “privileged” when my family had to work its way out of government sanctioned poverty.

I’ve know someone who was half-white and half-black both of her parents were incredibly kind people but it seems like she got it in her head she was a victim because she was part black and openly hated all white people because of it, she’d constantly tell me “im one of the good ones” and I kept thinking about her own mom being a nurse and working hard to be a good example to her kid She had plenty of examples of great people from all races, and horrible people too, I think it’s a social contagion. Her life went down hill because she didn’t try to apply herself to anything but trying to become a manager of a fast food joint which is closing down soon It’s easier to “Blame every single issue you have in life on white people” than to look at your own failings This book is an example of that mentality I want better for black women to look up to, I always thought tiana from Disney was a good example though. She was about hard work and sacrifice and in the end opened herself to having fun There is no reason why writing black women has to be a challenge! There’s no reason for why black women have to be written so poorly! There is no reason for why everything has to be preachy! I bet most comic books fans of all races are sick of seeing racism Can’t imagine being black and opening up a book just to constantly be reminded about racism on every page when comic books should be about heros fighting crimes and readers escaping the harsh realities they may come across in life

Where in the hell are the cool super villains at dammit, not some skinny rich white boy that supposed to be sYmBoLiSm of our oppression. Lol don’t care, this isn’t a YA novel, give me an evil galactic federation or some sh¡it. These types of stories don’t empower me. They remind me that even in a fantasy world of magic, I’m still undesirable by everyone it seems. Which I agree if we're solely talking about textbook definitions. BUT when black people and other minorities use this as an excuse to be hateful in turn, it demolishes whatever point they're trying to bring to light (I'm a black woman by the way). You can't be blatantly hateful to a group of people and then hide behind "I can't be racist because I'm black". I was seeing a guy (also black) who told me he hates white people. Or cars suddenly appear in the middle of the night, seconds after their headlights are seen, before running over people.

Talk about white racism. I was raised in a predominantly black community (my family was the only white family it was very small town outside of Flint, MI). I was like 7 years old. I was bullied by everyone in my class. Eventually I made friends after beating the shit out of a girl who was bullying me. My older brother was 9 years old, also getting bullied & had to beat the shit out of someone to gain any respect. My older sister was 11 years old, she ended up getting homeschooled cause unlike my brother & me she would never beat anyone up. A girl sitting behind her was threatening to stab her, cut her hair, told her she shouldn't be there cause she was white. All cause this girls boyfriend was into my sister. The doll barbie was being used as an insult on my sister. My oldest brother was 15 & not only white but gay as well. Which ask any of my gay black friends the amount of homophobia in the black community would amaze anyone. So my oldest brother also got homeschooled. Due to constant harassment & even was threatened by black boys that they would get a girl to r@pe him essentially so he learn to be straight. Also a boy came to hang out with my younger brother, & this kid got mad at my little sister slamming her head & told her she deserved it cause she was white. So my older brother & me respectfully beat the crap out of him. Anyways we moved not even a year later. Awful landlord. I have many black friends as well. They are pretty cool, & race isn't a problem for us.

Therefore I always felt uncomfortable when people are hating whites on a general term when many are just across the ocean, a lot of them from countries who did not have the accessibility to colonise foreign lands apart from European ones, and still get the same label? Whereas other races get different names and sub genres, whites are only allowed to be white which is way too broad for a race. And in addition it adds to a lot of confusion from Europeans as to why something we don’t think much about from day to day like skin colour is suddenly something people use to antagonise us

Not until the end, when you find out the main character is pale as a marble wall. And the race of whoever's being racist against them? You'll never know because it doesn't matter. i'm white, and was just mostly cringing at first, but then the school shooter scene.. i have had nightmares about being shot at school when i was there, vividly remembering in my DREAM what my brain perceived a gunshot wound to feel like, and it worsened my anxiety so drastically that i was constantly looking behind myself when in a hallway and wondering if any of the people i passed by was going to take out a gun and shoot me, every single person was a threat to me and it severely worsened my social abilities - and hell, i'll say it, i was more wary of it being a white man than anything, partially because i do understand they're more emboldened by the lack of consequences the majority, if not all, have faced in the past the school even had metal detectors installed in certain doors, and you were NOT allowed to enter or exit through any outside door that didn't have one, as well as didn't have a teacher or someone present to monitor it the detectors were extremely sensitive too and would constantly go off even if you just had a few 3-ring binders in a row, so every time it went off in a crowded area, your first thought would be 'am i about to die?' in JROTC, the girls were told to hide in the back of the class while the boys were REQUIRED to rush the shooter if they should approach and protect the girls (won't even really comment about the gendered thing, i imagine it should be well known that no child should be required to rush an active school shooter just because they're a boy) in art, we were told to weaponize pencils and scissors if possible if an active shooter broke into the classroom, we were practically being TRAINED how to attack an active shooter, when most of us weren't even 17-18 and even with all this preparation, in the four years i went to this school, i only experienced a SINGLE drill for what to do due to virtual learning becoming a thing, and even that was chilling as an adult was going around violently shaking the doors while it was pitch black and we were hiding under our desks and this is coming from someone who _never experienced a school shooter situation outside of a drill_ imagine how horrifically traumatized those who HAVE survived are, and you just.. casually throw that into a racist, shit comic to almost force feed the idea of racism into young readers who are IMPRESSIONABLE and most likely looking at your story for advice? the amount of anger i'm feeling right now is borderline primal and making me tear up, that is so unbelievably fucking disrespectful and careless, imagine how much god damn anxiety and stress some children are now feeling because they're being told in a comic they like that EVERY SINGLE WHITE PERSON IS BAD AND EVIL i do not give a single shit what your race is in this situation, if you're out here toying around lightheartedly about such a fucked concept and claiming you're representing shit, FUCK YOU i get it, white people suck, i'm aware of how much my race sucks absolute ass, but that should never, EVER, give you an excuse to mess around with a gravely serious issue to push against them- fighting racism with racism does jack SHIT, and by dragging in such serious topics in such a casual, nonserious way is beyond an asshole move, literal ELEMENTARY SCHOOLERS were killed in school shootings, i am PISSED

Thank you for speaking your mind 🙏🏻, as a fellow white girl, in school I would constantly be belittled and stereotyped for being white. My classmate keeps saying “you’re white you do ______” or “you’re white you can’t do this” whenever I joke around with her or anything. I am Russian, yet she stereotypes me as a white girl, as if I don’t have my own culture, aside from the country I live in. And I can’t say anything, because I really don’t want to ruin our friendship, and don’t want to be labeled racist if I call her out. It is funny how racism exists as normal, yet no one thinks it is racist

12:42 Despite how Wayland is clearly the villain in the scenario, does anyone else realize that Nubia comes out looking bad in this scenario too, given that she's an Amazon and sister to the Goddess of War, Wonder Woman? This is like a heavyweight boxer fighting a 5 year old. If he beats her, then she loses to a drunk asshole with no powers; pretty pathetic. If she wins and beats his ass, then she, a person with highly durable skin and enough strength to toss an ATM through concrete walls like she was passing a football, beats a drunk asshole that has no superpowers. This isn't like a mass shooter being put down by a Samaritan with a gun, because their weapons put them on equal level; this is like using akimbo Wildey Magnums against a dude who can only fight with his fists.

Speaking of racism and Zootopia (17:00), I saw some Human fanart of Nick and Judy on DeviantArt, where the artist STRAIGHT UP SAID(and I quote): “BLACK NICK AND KOREAN JUDY hoorah now stop drawin them white you’re missin the point of the film” Like, WTF did they mean by that?! That you can’t be racist to white people?!? That they automatically HAVE TO BE of those ethnicities, if they were humans?!?! Or if people draw them as anything else, they’re automatically missing the point of the movie?!?!? While I do agree that drawing them BOTH white simultaneously or the SAME ethnicity REALLY misses the point(I also draw Nick as a black man, but that’s just me)they WERE NOT meant to be stand-ins for real life groups, and what they both went through as characters can happen to ANYONE, regardless of race, skin color or ethnicity!🤦‍♀️ Unsurprisingly enough, the artist who wrote that cringe, also drew them in a SU/“Tumblr” artstyle, had(and might still have)a Tumblr account and genuinely believes ACAB.

I have had people genuinely tell me “your opinion on (Insert the most detached-from-race piece of media here) isn’t valid, because you are white.” Like seriously switch up the roles a little bit. How is this still going on? They preach a colorblind society, where race doesn’t matter, and I find that admirable. One thing, you’re taking about ten steps back from that perfect utopia by hating on white people just because we (like literally everyone) were acting stupid during a time when education was VERY optional. I’m sorry we thought you weren’t humans because you looked different. We also burnt people alive because their vibes were off and started a war because we thought tea was too expensive. It was hundreds of years ago, and thanks to your hard work during the civil rights movement, and the fact that school is free, we don’t do that shit anymore. Shut up about my pasty skin, please.

Y’know something I hate most is when people (mainly black people) race-swap characters that aren’t just white, but POC as well. Its crazy that they’re alright with making anime characters black but as soon as they get called out because that’s not okay they pull out the, “Blasian people exist” “It’s just for fun” “You’re just being racist” etc,. Like, it’s not fair to take representation from Black people, so why take it from Asian people? Plus, why is it only into Black/Blasian “headcannons/edits” and not Latino or Native edits? Why can’t we make Tiana lighter skinned because its possible for white + black mixed people to exist? The demonizing of white people just brings back segregation just in a different form. Believing that cultures should only be shared within certain ethnic groups is entirely racist and thats how cultures die out into obscurity. Humans are human no matter what race they are, just as dogs are dogs no matter what breed they are. When you get certain POC people victimizing themselves (ex. This comic) it is just so annoying and cringe.

Honestly, I don’t get why these authors use superheroes/supervillains to spread around their message without even developing their stories or the characters themselves properly. They’re just using a well established character, not doing anything worthwhile with them, and are just using them to spread their message about feminism or some shit like that. Yes, you CAN make a superhero book that has a message about feminism and issues. But even then, you HAVE TO MAKE IT WORK. THIS DOES NOT MAKE IT WORK. Not only does some of the plot holes and events NOT make sense, but it doesn’t even really try to develop something about Nubia at all. Maybe try making Nubia actually try to investigate these cases and try NOT being a dumbass when it comes to using her powers. Maybe try making this ACTUALLY APPEAL AS A SUPERHERO COMIC INSTEAD OF A POLITICAL WOKE PIECE. I’m literally who this books target audience is supposed to be for, and yet this isn’t something I would read AT ALL. I want stories about superheroes kicking ass, saving the world, and growing along the way while dealing with issues in a clever way. Not this woke garbage. Why can’t they just make their own story instead of using these characters as political woke pieces? It not only doesn’t do anything good for the character, but nobody is even going to buy it and it doesn’t do anything good for comic sales. Anyways forgive me for this rant piece, I just had to speak my mind about this awful garbage.

@@domo4938 When it comes to leeching off of popular ips. They seem to want to have all the powers of say spider-man without any of the responsibility or to put it another way, all the fame that comes with the legacy character without having to deal with any responsibility to the fans. Which is why stuff like we are making a new she-ra, that is not for she-ra fans seems to happen. Which makes me wonder if deep down they know their work wouldn't get the time of day, if it wasn't tied to an already existing character. For all they do with these bad stories, is just damage the brand and burn through the good will others build up. Which in some cases like star wars, the brand has been damage so badly by mishandling it, hasbro can't even get 5000 people to back the funding for a lightsaber toy. For many of these hip cool new creators, can't really seem to create with how often their works seem to be same copy and paste of bad writing I seen countless times before them. For at this point I lost count of how many pieces of media, have done the whole over powered hero, while making the villain weak and stupid to such a great degree. The villain is not a threat at all. Why is there a story in the first place, when the main source of all the conflict is so easily stopped? It makes the whole thing just seem pointless and meaningless. With how there being no reason to better themselves or anything to overcome. Which makes me wonder if they truly know what the role of the antagonist is. of course I guess all of that is normal when you don't care about the story, otherwise something as important as the main source of conflict, wouldn't be a total push over. Heck with how many of these characters that fail to have a proper antagonist, tend to be rather low on the overall power scale of fictional characters. Which should make it easy to come up with something to challenge them. Oh hey have super strength? Give their foe super endurance, so they are force to use their powers in creative ways to win the fight ,rather than knocking them out with one punch. Let them fail from time to time, to see how the character deals with failure. Have real back and forth, to keep the reading wondering who will win. Yet sadly, just throw all these golden moments to build up or show another side of the character away , due to not caring about the story.

The bad proportions is convincing me so because that is such a common quality in artists who haven't actually went to art school. That one horrendous shot reminds me of the way they filmed Tall Girl. Why did I study so hard to improve, if this shit already gets an official release? Even if she doesn't like Wayland, she would save him because that's what it means to be a hero and to lead by example, even though she would agree that Wayland needs to be punished she knows that Murder isn't the answer. Now personally getting rid of the school shooting scene entirely would be better but I think it could still be a salvageable scene... well not really but it could have been handled better.

It was a big wake up call being hated for how I looked (which was maybe 1 or 2 students a year, most students were okay). When I'd get called a bi***, more often than not, they would put white in front of it. I feel a lot of negative emotions about race had to deal with lack of exposure to different cultures. I had some students from Burma who other students continued to call Korean, despite them being corrected over and over. More than once, I'd hear "I hate white people" in my class. I'd promptly point out that I was white, some students thought I was Hispanic for some reason. I'd get a response along the lines of of "not you miss", like I was the exception. I'd try to make it a teaching moment about generalizing people, but I don't think it ever sank in.

i'll give the comic one thing, the weird art made me laugh a few times 3:57 mouths 6:05 the word "click" looks like "cuck" 10:18 that's just Lars from Steven Universe 11:20 this would be actually a neat looking page if the moon wasn't scribbled on by a toddler 11:45 are they doing the superbowl shuffle? 13:37 legs 18:13 eyes 18:37 an oddly casual pose for a school shooting, also nice loafers

You know, the Waylon story could’ve been really good if it had turned out that Waylon had been falsely accused and he was actually a really great guy and the plot line was Nubia and her friend learning not to blindly believe rumors and sort out their own racial prejudice.

"Static Shock" (also part of DC!) actually did a (suspiciously?) similar storyline: Black teen superhero, white school shooter. HOWEVER, at no point was there ever the implication that the guy snapped because he was white or privileged (?) but he was massively bullied and in a terrible mental state. The only (accidental) victim was also white.

@@Alias_Anybody Static Shock is so good it’s a shame it’s been forgotten as of late. It gave me one of my favorite characters in Permafrost, and one of my favorite villains in Ebon.

A year late, but; because if a PoC/woman isn't completely infallible, and every white man is not utterly incompetent and evil it's every-ist/-phobic

Why, and i mean, why the hell can't we have stories that don't reflect reality!!! Stories are supposed to be an escape!!!! i'm, a black person who going through black problems, i don't want to read a comic that's basically telling me my life story.

There's no comics about disability but only ones show the stereotyped wheelchair or stick

@@skootergirl22 uh....well writing a character with a disability is hard to do, since you'd have to study what the disability is and not make a bad representation of how people with a disability behave, like how they make Autistic children understand alien languages, that makes no sense, and is kinda offensive towards them. That and disability is probably not a thing people want to read about when they want to have fun... reading. Unless you like sobby shit 🤷
