REVIEW ON TAMIYA KIT #35241, „GERMAN MOTORCYCLE ORDERLY SET“,
YEAR OF RELEASE: 2000 (1999 for the motorcycle)
ALL LINKS AT THE END OF THE DESCRIPTION
Hi, guys! For the time being my days are mainly filled with talking to my girlfriend who moved to the North and is looking for a flat for us. It's much more time consuming as if she was here and we could talk whenever we want to. That means I have little to no (bench) time and so I'm doing videos with pics I already took, because I can interrupt working on them whenever it's necessary. There'll come days with more time for the things I usually do again, such as modeling and so on.
I needed police license plates for the BMW R12 that I'll use on my „Say Cheese“ dio, but I wasn't able to find any after market decals. I was very happy when Hamilkar Barkas mentioned this set. It includes the decals I need and as an add-on I got a DKW NZ 350 motorcycle and - maybe - two useful figures.
I bought it of eBay and that saved me 4 €. The set was complete, the bags were open, the staples removed - no danger to slice my fingers! Well, it actually never happened to me! I closed the bags safely again using tape.
I built the motorcycle before. It was released in 1999 and it came in a small clear plastic bag. The motorbike consists of only 21 parts! Something you can build in an hour including a proper clean up, if you just build it out of the box. What can be expected of this small kit? You won't be surprised that there aren't any PE parts like spokes. Since the DKW can be found it in other Tamiya kits, it can't be a mistake to take a closer look.
By the way, I found 1/35 after market decals for German WW II vehicles - including motorbikes - now. If you watched my short review on the German license plates by TL-Decals and visited their site, you may have seen them there. If you didn't I put the link at the end of this description again and I added the site with the motorbike license plates.
Hope you like my new profile and the minor changes in the appearance of this video.

Sometimes simple is the best way to go. Neat little kits but with touch here and a dab there I know you will bring them to life!!

Thanks a lot, Bob! Totally agree. It doesn't always have to be a fiddly kit. I already made notes of what I want to change and add. I guess the DKW will have about 80 or 90 parts when I'm finished, but I don't count the parts, so I'm only guessing. Will answer your mail later. I'm talking to F.! :)

Thanks, Mark! I think so too. Making the steering handle from ten parts is okay, but not half as clever. It's just reproducing all actual parts and make the modeler glueing them together again, hehehe!

Schrecklich!!! :D

Thanks a lot, my friend! I agree. Usually we only see BMW or Zündapp German motorcycles, but these smaller ones saw a lot of use, especially with dispatch riders. They were lighter and easier to handle, so their cross country abilities were better. If you should buy it and want to enjoy the build, do it slowly or you'll be finished in an hour. A typical Tamiya kit, hehehe!

Vielen Dank, Michael! :)

I'll add all brake and fuel lines and the wiring and I'll take care of sprocket and chain. And I hope I won't have an idea on how to deal with the spokes!!! :D

Well, let me put it this way: I definitely won't cut them out. If I can come up with an idea of improving the kit's spokes I might do that. The work may be a bit too much for this kit, so I'm not sure if I really want to do that. :)

Thanks a lot, Steve! It actually depends on what you expect. There are many new and part heavy motorcycle kits available. They have PE spokes and so on and they will probably look really nice. I'm more into scratch building, so I prefer to have a very good base for it. And I'll use this one as a "secondary" model, so it can do with less details. I forgot a third way to deal with the road signs. You could scan and print them! I'm really getting old. :)

Thanks a lot, Ennis! No, unfortunately no parts for the NZ-1. I don't know if there's an after market set with these parts available. That motorcycle wasn't that well received by the soldiers as the first version though. Well, I'll add all brake and fuel lines and the wiring. I've got an idea about sprocket and chain but will do a test version first, because it'll be some surgery and I don't want to mess up the kit. Since this kit is very small I might build it along with something else. I'll only have to store it safely until I start with the main kit for the dio I want to use it for.

Vielen Dank, Ralph.

All are British motorcycles. Looks at the vertical engine cylinder. German motor cycles had horizontal cylinders like BMW r75 or r17 British motor cycles had vertical cylinders. Like bsa m 20 Norton 16H

I'm really sorry if this sounds rude, but you don't seem to know a lot about German motorcycles. DKW was a German manufacturer that was established in Chemnitz (Zschopau)/Saxony in 1904, so this DKW 350 NZ is German. The DKW 350 NZ was a light motorbike. The BMW R12 and the Zündapp KS 750 were heavy motorbikes with more than twice the displacement. That's why they had two cylinder boxer engines. You better look things up before posting a comment like this.

Thanks a lot, mate. Glad you liked the review. With regards to the details I must disagree, because this kit is *twenty* years old and for that age most details are excellent. I've got about 200 reference pics of the DKW and I compared kit and the actual motorcycle bit by bit. Of course there are flaws (chain, drive sprocket, spokes and a few more), but most details are there and they are - again with regards to the kit's age - nicely executed. Unfortunately slide moulding didn't exist back then. I'm in the hobby for 42 years now and I saw many bad kits in all those years. This one really isn't bad at all. I like Tamiya kits but I'm not a fan. I don't have any reasons to defend them, but I built the motorcycle the year it was released and fit is very nice. Back in the days there was no better motorcycle kit available. I do agree with you when it comes to the wheels. They should have been done in at least two parts each, but after all this motorcycle was only meant to be used as a "secondary" model on dios. Tamiya designed and engineered the kit in a way that it can be built easily (only 20+ parts) and in my opinion there's nothing wrong with that. I prefer kits like this, because there's a lot of room for extra-detailing. I guess the completed motorcycle will consist of more than 100 parts (no aftermarket PE sets) when I'm finished and that's what I like about building these aged kits. But that's only my personal taste. :)
