This is so amazing! I just can't believe I'm watching events that happened over 100 years ago and which I have read about in history books. The films are quite good, clear and steady. Thanks for posting!

We know now from the personal letters and memories of the queen and her mother that they were very afraid of an anarchist attack during the day.

Thank you for this record of history. I wish I would have known of her earlier, she lived until 1962, I was 8 yrs old. Everyone is this video is long gone, but I shared life with some of them, including the Queen. Once again, thank you for a great presentation.

it is a wonderful document, however she was only one of many very brave Royals who served their people during WW2, or who were in active service in the military. She is very well remembered, respected, and beloved by many throughout the world.

Very interesting and you are to commended for saving the old films. The Dutch succession is very civilized in that the monarch abdicates in favor of a younger prince or princess who will bring new ideas with them. I was impressed to see this as it has been 391 years since my ancestors left the homeland for America to build barrels for the West India Company. Unlike many here we haven't forgotten our roots since we were still members of the Reformed Church which has all the records of our baptisms and provided that continuity.

Am i right that you have Dutch ancestors who left Nederland in 1627 to settle in the United States? That was during the 80 year war between the Netherlands and Spain and before usa independence day of 1776. So interesting that you have the history of your ancestors in the records of your church.

@@babagama4232 In general, Christians and churches that broke away from the Church of Rome during the 16th century are called those of the “Reformation”. In what is now called Germany, some followed Martin Luther and others followed Martin Bucer, Huldrich Zwingli and later John Calvin (from France, who was in Geneve and Strasbourg). But In the Low Countries, now called “Nederland”, the majority becamee Calvinists. Emperor Charles V, who was also king of Spain, and his son king Philip II, persecuted all reformed people, and this led to the 80-year War which was won by the Republic of the United Provinces in 1648. Early in this war, the fledgling government proclaimed “freedom of religion" and the Reformed Church became the “preferred church” while others like Lutherans, Jews, Anabaptists and Roman Catholics were “allowed to exist ” without overt persecution. Many things changed in the Napoleonic area. Since 1834, there have been various splits (and then mergers of the splits) and I do not know everything about them. All reformed people agree to the theology in the Belgic Confession, the Heidelberg Catechism and the Canons of Dordrecht (as summarizing specific things from the Bible as the Word of God). These are all available on-line in many languages. Tolle lege.

Wilhelmina was queen after the death of her father in 1890 but to young to reign. Until 1898 when Wilhelmina was 18 years of age her mother was queen-regent.

Did excist a Video a few Moments later when they visit "Schwerin" in mecklenburg Vorpommern in 1901?

In 1898 video camera had been existing so nowaday in 2020 we can see those moment, without it we impossible turn back time

"Vrijheid is voor geen geld te koop! (=Freedom is not for sale at any price") was what she encouraged the people with, in broadcasts over Radio Oranje (though the BBC) from the government-in-exile. "Eenzaam maar niet alleen" (=Lonely but not alone") was the title of her autobiography. The coronation was held when she had come of "legal" age; her mother Emma had been regent since king Willem III had died in 1880, thence the 58 years in the video. I received a "goude medaille" at her 50th jubilee in 1948, at Alphen een de Rijn. (I was in pre-school, but remember it well.)

Because of the many dutch churches the first king William I of Holland made the decision not to have a religious coronation to prevent any arguments between the christian communities.

@@johannesnicolaas He was the "successor" of his grandfather who had been Stadhouder Willem V (meaning employee of the Staten Generaal) and had only made pretentions of royalty - which brought him the ire of the Patriotten. The reestablishment of the "ancien regime" with the second fall of Napoleon probably required a monarch of the buffer state between France and the German conglomerate.

Ze was toen al een jaar of acht geen Prinses Wilhelmina meer zoals in het geschreven commentaar staat. Ze was al vanaf 1890 de koningin.

Vanwege de lichtval natuurlijk, ze hadden veel licht nodig voor te kunnen filmen in die tijd, het zou onmogelijk zijn geweest daar bruikbare beelden te maken.

Note that the Netherlands had been neutral during World War I (a.k.a. the Third Bulgarian War) and that during the 1930's - when the "Great Depression" was worst and longest of all the world in the Netherlands (because Colijn's government refused to get off the gold standard) - several democratic reforms were initiated in what the queen called "Our beloved Insulinde". A constitutional monarch (as she was) cannot be blamed for mistakes by democratically elected governments.

If Queen Wilhelmina (plus the cabinet) had gone to New York, that would have put FDR in a terrible predicament, because the US of A was still neutral until the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour. In retrospect after 70 years, maybe going there might have caused a rapid end to WWII. It is not always realized that the Dutch Armed Forces actually withstood the German forces (and NAZI was an acronym of a political party only) and only an act of terrorism (the bombardment of Rotterdam) left General Winkelman with no other choice than to surrender.

The Sovereign in The Netherlands exercises the Royal Authority but is not actually crowned, thus it is an inauguration ceremony rather than a coronation ceremony that you find in most other monarchies.

Wilhelmina, she made the best of her job. Never visited the Dutch East Indies because she 'could not take the heat'. 1890 to 1948? Seems incorrect as for what I know it was 1898 to 1948. Still too young as an 18 year old youngster to be a head of state.

Between 1890 and 1998 Queen Emma was Regent until Queen Wilhelmina was 18, but she became de facto Queen in 1890 after her father, king Willem III died.

I should make notice that residentie of my grandpa was Sumatera Westkust, don't forget to write t( not weskust).Nowaday we call it Sumatera Barat.It is a province in Indonesia and Fort de Kock Is renamed as kota Bukit tinggi.The kota Bukit Tinggi has famous landmark called JAM GADANG. Official opening ceremony was attended by Queen Wilhelmina.My grandpa always remembered this event before he died in 1990.

You would think so, but in the Netherlands the crown isn't actually placed on the monarch's head. It is present during the proceedings, as a mere symbol of royal authority. So the ceremony isn't a coronation in the strict sense.

disgusting, it's all financed from the practice of slavery in Indonesia for hundreds of years. The Dutch are not willing to release Indonesia. See the Round table conference that ended with the Netherlands agreeing to transfer sovereignty to the Indonesia with term that Indonesia WOULD TAKE OVER APPROXIMATELY 4.3 BILLION GUILDERS OF DUTCH EAST INDIES GOVERNMENT DEBT. They colonized Indonesia for hundreds of years and then asked for compensation when expelled. Penjajahan yang paling brutal!!

Around the time this was filmed, there was more money going to the Netherlands-Indies than the other way around. However, Wilhelmina did receive many gifts from the Netherlands-Indies. Also after independence, Soeharto gave lavish gifts to Queen Juliana. However, it should be noted that Wilhelmina was generally very concerned with the peoples in the Indian archipelago. She even recognized that Indonesia should become an independent state already in May 1943. Moreover, slavery was abolished before this filming. However, the practice of slavery did continue on the Bone islands because the Dutch had little power to control trade in that area.

Well a lot of atrocities happened especially during that time in Indonesia so don't mention this. The Dutch wanted to keep their territories at all cost. That's why Americans didn't want to help the Dutch at first after the disaster in Zealand in the Netherlands in 1953. Nevertheless i do like the video. But don't come with such a weak excuse. Since the first ship arrived in 1594 the Dutch took all the valuables and established themself and killed almost all the population of the Banda islands in 1621 just for the very expensive spices and enslaved the rest of the people. They did not only steal their gold but occupied al the islands for 350 years, enslaved its people, raped the women and killed ten thousands of Indonesian people for nothing. And then a random Dutch says but hey at that time more money went in then out. At first you shouldn't belong their at all, secondly it's not true and they have been stealing until the very last day and third they never payed a dime of compensation.

Pada dasarnya tidak ada politik balas budi, Belanda membuka sekolah di Indonesia untuk kepentingan pemerintah Belanda sendiri, mengisi tenaga kerja yang dibutuhkan perusahaan perusahaan Belanda sendiri, yang jika didatangkan dari Eropa terlalu mahal, jadi mendidik orang pribumi untuk mendapatkan tenaga kerja murah, dampaknya memang menciptakan kelompok pribumi yang terdidik yang merupakan cikal bakal tokoh tokoh pergerakan nasional, jadi bukan balas budi.
