    It just means the human brain can't concentrate at more than one thing at a time. It can switch back and forth fast, but not more than one thing at the same time. You also lose track of time, which can be distance over time. Remember that when driving 60mph and texting. You are not doing both at the same time.

    Was immediately distracted by the bear. It's impossible for me to imagine not seeing that. My mind would pick up on a fun/creative thing more easily than I could even force myself to count the passes (which I was off by 2 during the bear's entrance). I have history of ADD and high rating of Openness to Experience (for reference if you are also here for research) so this makes sense.

    I guess this is supposed to show how people who witness a crime can get it wrong. As if the people in white were committing a crime. But if they were, you WOULD have an accurate assessment of their actions because your attention WAS focused on the people committing the crime. All this really shows is that there might have been ANOTHER crime being committed by the people in black that you didn't notice. Because you were distracted by the actions of the people who committed the FIRST crime. It doesn't mean you got the first crime wrong. You just didn't notice the second crime.

    Horribly structured test. This was obviously set up in a very purposeful manner to ensure the viewers eyes don't even come close to seeing the bear. Plus, by having the bear match the color of the other teams outfits, which is in stark contrast to the team color focused on, it's guaranteed people will miss the bear. I knew there was a moon-walking bear before I watched it and even then I wasn't able to spot it. People can literally only consciously focus on one single thing at a time. That's it. So basically a term and test was created to point out the obvious. Gratz!

  • @catrescue6413

    @catrescue6413

    2 жыл бұрын

    That is the whole point. When you watch it first time if you are counting the passes you would miss it. But when you watch it second time by paying attention to catching the bear you see the bear. I use this video in my class to teach my students we only pay attention to the things we care about and we can miss the things our culture do not teach us as being important. We see the things as we are not as they really are.

  • @robertcastleberry2909

    @@catrescue6413 Not an accurate reflection of the test. As I pointed out, if the instruction was to count how many times the team members in black passed the ball then the viewer would most often notice the moonwalking bear. This is because our focal point is transitioning between black and the ball. Even though we are not instructed to look for a bear we would still notice it as the color black is one of our focal points. If instead someone dressed like a polar bear and crossed the scene we would have noticed it while counting passes made by those in white. We see what we are focused on. That's the simple of it all. A fact that magicians have been using to their benefit for long before this study came to exist. The same observation that we miss what we aren't focused on could have been made by completing forgoing any ape costumed dancers and just asking if the viewer noticed how many times the team in black passed the ball. In fact, if the team in black never even passed the ball at all and just moved around miming the movements of passing a ball the viewer would likely be none the wiser. We cannot look at a page of text and read it all at once. Our focal point has to shift from letter to letter/word to word. If we are instructed to only read every other paragraph on a page we could entirely miss the fact that the paragraphs we skipped over were written in another language. The authors of this study and subsequent book are flawed in their conclusion that the gorilla is LITERALLY invisible to the viewer, a fault that they use to conclude that accidents with motorcycles happen more often because they are LITERALLY invisible to drivers perceptions. Someone performing the same drive everyday will often find themselves driving in a sort of "autopilot". They'll get from point A to point B with little to no recollection of what occurred on the drive, however, the fact that the drive occurred safely meant that they were in fact aware of their surroundings. They could drive behind a red truck the whole way and have zero recollection of there being a red truck on the road with them. If that red truck were in fact invisible, as the authors claim, then the driver would have crashed into it at some point. The "invisible" gorilla test is just another example of an insanely long list of examples that we've had for a very long time that we are incapable of focusing on all things at once. The test itself presents nothing new. The authors interpretations of it however, present a lot of inaccurate assessments of what the test does present. Yet one more flawed translation in a very long list of them throughout our history of observations. You may as well just invite a magician into your classroom to prove the same point.
