Yay, Laura! Nice to see your face. And I'll accept you putting my favorite, Villette, at #2 ;) Funnily enough, Wuthering Heights is the only Brontë novel I've re-read (read it three times so far), and I agree - I get something totally different out of it each time, and it's been interesting to see how my reaction to it has changed over time (I've enjoyed it and respected what it's doing more and more with each read).

I just finished reading Wuthering Heights (new to the Brontes, new to Victorian Lit) and I absolutely LOVED IT. I'm a middle-aged man, so I didn't see this as a romance AT ALL but found it a very gripping story of emotional abuse. The characters were really great and AWFUL. lol. And wow, that last sentence...one of the best sentences I've ever read. I'll probably read Jane Eyre and the Tenant of Wildfell Hall soon.

I'm thinking of reading Emily Bronte's "The Old Stoic" poem, next poetry Thursday.

That thing about it mattering when in your life you read a classic has been on my mind a good bit lately. Probably because its Victober and I'm reading classics.

@@LauraFreyReadinginBed In high school the classics I liked best were _The Three Musketeers_ and _The Man in the Iron Mask_ . I had seen the 70s comic/drama staring Richard York and Raquel Welch at some point. In my senior English class we could read whatever books we wanted each grading period. Each book was assigned a point value and you had to have read 10 points worth of books. I had failed that part of class the previous grading period because I chose _David Copperfield_ because it was worth 10 points. Having learned my lesson I chose _The Three Musketeers_ (4 points) figuring that since I had seen the movie the test would be a piece of cake (typical). At some point I started to read the book and I really liked it. So I followed that up with _The Man in the Iron Mask_ (3 points). Those books probably explain why I still like 19 Century French novels.

Hi Laura. It’s so good to see you again. I like hearing that you think Villette is a good novel, that’s one I haven’t read and I wasn’t sure I wanted to invest the time on it. I’m with you Wuthering Heights is my favorite. I do miss your videos so I’ll be here if you decide to come back.

I read Gaskell's biography of Charlotte and it was remarkable to me how small the Brontë world was. Small villages, sporadic visitors, lots of letters and getting sick. So I guess it makes sense that all the novels follow that pattern. I did like Villette, but it did read like a partially fictionalized version of Gaskell's take on Charlotte's life.

Heh, I was about to start typing "You're back!" when you commented that you're not really back. 😆 I confess, I've never particularly enjoyed the Brontë sisters' novels (I know, I know! Maybe it's because of the terrible Jane Eyre theatre adaptation I saw as a child? Maybe it's because of my great love for the very non-loyal 1939 film adaptation of Wuthering Heights? 🤷) so I won't be joining in on the read-them-all/rank-them-all fun, but I salute everyone who does!

@@LauraFreyReadinginBed Reading Jane Eyre was really surprising as I had a different idea of the book before and I liked the romance. Wuthering Heights on the other hand I heard of as this great romance and I just hated everyone. I keep thinking I should reread it now that I have a different expectation of it.
