@@verdanthyborian2322 Gameplay was rock solid in closed beta, then it went on with unneeded content additions while not fixing bugs or stupid gamedesign implementations. Plus, just as any asym, it had such a steep learning curve that it was an absolute biased hell of "usables and unusables". Still, it was a better "game" than what could be of Dead Sun gameplay wise.

Soul Reaver felt so radical at the time for making the previous protagonist the primary antagonist in the sequel. Making things even more strange was Blood Omen 2 coming out, putting you back in the role of Kain after playing as Raziel for several games. I’d love episodes focusing on this series, and you could probably cover it in various series: What Happun, Flophouse Files, etc.

Lots of content for all of those too; Nosgoth (Flophouse,) Dead Sun, Dark Prophecy, the original version of SR (Wha Happun,) the releases themselves (Retrospective,) etc. This series has an incredibly complicated release history that would be a ton of fun to explore.

blood omen 1 e 2 are so dated but i like that you play as KAIN in those games YEAHH .. he's also cool, and also, in the 1 and 2 games kain have PALE SKIN , i guess he evolved with the time or something .

It's not that vampires are allergic to water. They aren't. Vampires are dissolved by naturally running water. They could take a swim in the ocean or a lake or a pool with no problem, but they can't cross a stream or a river without it killing them. The folklore behind this is because supposedly Jesus was baptized in a river, and since vampires are pure evil, now it hurts them, same as with crosses and holy water.

yeah, blood omen is cool , i didn't played everything ,it looks dated , but the fact that you play as kain is great .he drinks blood from afar like using a straw lol, vampire telekinesis maybe, raziel have tk too

Legacy of Kain series, so much freakin' talent in this game, Amy Hennig, From this to Uncharted, Tony Jay and Rene Auberjonois (RIP to some real ones), Michael Bell (The Fear, not Gray Fox), and Simon Templeman. It sucks everybody working on it left Eidos and Crystal, because this game would do greatly from a remake, either Eidos and Crystal find the time inbetween Avengers updates, or sell it off to a company with time AND WITH Hennig, that's the REAL IMPORTANT thing.

They could hire these folks, oh man , a remake would be so good right now, its been quite awile that i already want this remake, the character raziel is so cool , this game is a gem and it must be revived . raziel could fit so perfectly in a game like marvel vs capcom or something like it .i know its not possible because of the diferent franchise, but i could imagine him bein on super smash bross ,as a playable character , even kain is also cool, he looks like conan the barbarian or something.

Yes please Matt I would love a :"Wha Happun?" on the whole franchise! It's quickly becoming one of my favourites and I've only played it recently. Edit: 8:58 I won't stand for this mockery! Raziel using that piece of cloth as a substitution for his missing lower jaw is the BEST! Also look up some concept art for Melchiah, the boss fight at the end of the video. The low poly model doesn't do it enough justice, I love his design.

It sure had a very distinctive aesthetics and atmosphere that always screamed late 90s to me. I recently watched Lotus Prince's let's play of Omicron and I found a lot of parallels between the two, aesthetics-wise. Not to mention the incredible innovations despite the PS1's limitations. The real-time plane shift in which the level morphed in shape around you was incredible back in 1999.

@@KaineSpawnX - I think that might have been in the bonus features on Soul Reaver 2. Some of those voice sessions were absolutely hilarious!

Soul Reaver has an insane amount of cut content, the remaster could bring it back in. Also as much I love this game (and series), it could definitely use some improvements or straight up reworked mechanics (especially combat and platforming).

As a long time LoK fan, I am torn on this. A remaster restoring the cut content would probably erase the rest of the series, which developed a fairly fascinating story, and one of the few time-travelling narratives where historical retcons were handled well and were actually part of the greater scheme. It should totally be _revamped_ in terms of controls and fighting mechanics, though. Remember how useless the last vampire boss ability was, aside from a couple mandatory puzzles? Or the over-reliance on matching cubes puzzles? I could definetly do with fewer of those.

@@Zeburaman2005 I went through the entire Soul Reaver without getting 1 single ability upgrade. It was still ridiculously easy. The platforming is horrible, especially when it comes to precise jumps the game just isn't capable of making. Hmm, I think most of the cut content could be added, but recontextualized - there could still be a boss fight with Turel, but Raziel wouldn't kill him. He would escape or be directly teleported into the past by the Hylden so the later games still make sense. You could do that with a lot of the cut locations and bosses, just slightly alter the context and outcome so they still fit.

Although Legacy of Kain is by far my favourite old platforming series, I somewhat agree. I can't say combat and platforming were so bad if we consider the era this game was from (90s arcades had bad controls and camera by today's standarts), but later games' combat was definitely very boring and repetitive. Last time I tried to replay them I dropped Defiance on 2/3 way through because it was this annoying. I won't lie, I probably would like to see a full scale remake, not a remaster, to see how they could approach things a bit more different with more creative freedom.

@@sergeantbanzai2462 To be fair, gameplay has never been the strongest suit of LoK series. It's never been outright terrible, but I wouldn't put it above "serviceable." Defiance was the only one that I actively enjoyed playing all the way through, despite the stupid camera and frustrating platforming. What I think would be ideal for the series as a whole is Defiance's combat with Soul Reaver 2's puzzles and Soul Reaver's open areas.

@@Zeburaman2005 Yeah, I've had the same thought over the... Well, decades. Given the story had to be cut due to setbacks, perhaps there's a novel solution - have the story branch at the time chamber. Ending A leads the series through the sequels, Ending B sees Raziel taking his revenge on Kain and restoring Nosgoth. It gives the players agency, closure and doesn't kill sequel potential if it sells well / doesn't end on a cliffhanger if it doesn't!

This game 100% needs a remaster. Please do a what happun

Now that some of the beta-version discs have surfaced, I wonder how long it'll be before someone mods this to its originally-intended glory. We only got about 2/3rds of the planned product.

Man, I forgot just how GOOD the voice acting is in this game. I never beat this as a kid, I really should revisit it and see if I'm any better at block puzzles. The story of the copyright nightmare that was the Legacy of Kain series is prime What Happened material, for sure.

You would have a blast doing a Wha Happun on Soul Reaver's cut content. Huge part of the fanbase has sustained itself on the series that way, and Soul Reaver's missing like 1/4 of its planned content. Also yes pls on a remake. As long as Amy Hennig gives her approval on the writing!

I love how all millinials loved this as a kid, and looking back it's such a game made for adults. It's themes are even stressing for an adult in Soul Reaver 1. I don't know how, but this game has such a crazy spirit about it.

This was definitely my Ocarina of Time; both this and Metal Gear Solid set the bar high from what I want from a video game, especially story , writing and voice-acting wise.

As much as I would adore a Wha Happun on Soul Reaver, I must say that covering everything that's happun in the Legacy of Kain series from Blood Omen 1 through Defiance and into Nosgoth would probably be 'Wha Happun: The Motion Picture'. All the games deserve Wha Happuns. I think they all would give a good insight into the compromises that come from game development.

Please do give a "What Happened?" Please give us something....GIVE US ANYTHING!!!!!

I love the LoK series, I would definitely like to see a 'Wha happen?' video, there was another game I heard rumors about 'Dark sun' or something, seeing a video about one of my childhood favorites has brightened my day after a 14hr shift, thanks Matt.

Please make a what happened to this game. It's a classic I still play to this day.

Yeah, soul reaver 2 had no loading times and with the PS5 / Xbox SX tech it would be awesome.

This franchise's voice cast/script is an 11/10. I've got that intro movie still memorized word-for-word, I watched it so many times in high school. Plus it got me into the band Information Society.

We definitely need a remake in the style of the new final fantasy 7. Especially for Blood Omen. Imagine that large open world from a 3rd person perspective and how amazing the dungeons would be!

Fun fact. The emblem on Raziel cloak is the same one on Kamala Khan’s scarf in The Avengers game, also developed by Crystal Dynamics.

I honestly do love how you can't take about Legacy of Kain without someone demanding a remake. If they did, all I ask is that they keep the dialogue audio the same because the voice acting is absolute perfection, and that the originals be included as completion bonuses.

The Legacy of Kain & Soul Reaver series would make a fascinating Wha Happun.

I loved this game, loved this series and still annoyed that the final game ended in a cliffhanger and they never returned to it.

I just got the urge to add a raziel figure to my collection and was reminded how much i love this series (it also helped the guy selling them was selling them for a 1/3 of their current aftermarket price) would love for a top down remake like we got with Crash, Shadows of the Colossus, etc.

Now I want to see Matt play the rest of the soul reaver series and defiance!

Raziel (and Melchiah) was voiced by Michael Bell. He was the voice behind as Sideswipe in transformers, The Fear in MGS3 and Medivh in Warcraft III. God bless this gentleman and Simon Templeman (Kain's VA).

Tony Jay was also Frollo from Hunchback of Notre Dame. Soul Reaver was a technical marvel as it is theoretically one large stage with areas locked behind abilities... like how Kain is tucked away just past the ruins of the Sanctuary (early area you access) but Raziel needs to obtain Melchiah's ability to get to him.

A charnel house is a building where human bones are stored, like a mausoleum but less organized. Vampires were traditionally weak against running water because it is the essence of life. Generally, this referred to rivers and streams, not to oceans or lakes. Other vampiric weaknesses were regional. Some had to count grain if you threw it at them and could not defend themselves until they picked it all up. Other vampires had to always wear hats (not even joking). Silver, garlic, sunlight, and oak stakes are common vulnerabilities based on the European vampire mythos.

You could totally do a What Happen on the cancelled Dead Sun! That and the Nosgoth multiplayer game that was supposed to be the multiplayer mode from that game... that they eventually shut down after a few months. Sad stuff

Any attempt to remake this game would absolutely require the original voice actors. Without Tony Jay (RIP), the whole story's going to lose a lot of atmosphere. Destroy All Humans reused its original voice clips, so at least we've seen it's possible to do that pretty well. If you ever do a Wha' Happun, The Lost Worlds is a great resource for everything regarding the series, including some massive write ups on deleted content and how the game changed so substantially to meet its deadline. The entire ending and several levels regarding it were canned, and only this year were alpha copies found that allowed us to visit these legendary zones.

One of my favourite franchises and games. Such epic storytelling, voice acting and music. Such a shame that the story ended on a cliffhanger with no sequel in sight. You should definitely do more Soul Reaver.

This franchise has a lot of potential but it seems that Sqaure is no interested in bringing this back. Hell, even with the return of the platformers they never bothered to make a port or a remaster of Gex (antoher property from Crystal Dynamics). They should sell the rights to someone who actually cares.

Still one of the most underrated series ever made. I've played the first Soul Reaver and Blood Omen games countless times, I love 'em!

This game was amazing, I couldn't believe how great the VA and music and atmosphere were, not to mention no loading times after the initial load -- even when switching between the two world states.

A "WHA HAPPUN?" for the whole LoK series would be absolutely fucking awesome. The outtakes reel for Defiance shows how hard voice acting is

Wow I just discover LoK two weeks ago! I’m sooo glad ppl are still talking about this amazing series!!!

Played the hell out of Soul Reaver back in the days and it bearly worked on my PC (got like 3-6 fps tops). But the atmosphere, that intro(!) and lore kept me coming for more. I would love to see a proper remake. Also, Matt you can throw spears. I think it's cool addition to the combat.

I don't know about that, I actually had to call the shop I bought it at back in the days to solve the level loading bug in the PS1 version. But I guess having to open and close the console's lid to refresh the data streaming kind of added to the overall charm of the experience.

I´d be great to see a Wha Happun episode about Nosgoth. I remember seeing gameplay footage and suddenly nothing happened. It was cancelled for some reason.

I think the in-story explanation for rain is that, like minor wounds and sunlight, it's something vampires gain an immunity to as they age from fledgling to adult.

Oh man, I loved the Legacy of Kain series! I'd love to see you play more of it!

Soul Reaver had it all. It had a captivating setting and storyline. The sound, most notably the music and voice acting, were on point. The gameplay was fun, and the controls were tight. The graphics, circa 1999, really popped. The map was quite large, for the time, with almost no loading screens. Once you got the cheat code to enter/exit the astral plane at will, Soul Reaver got even better-where you can instantly shift back and forth, using the environment warping effects to your full advantage. This felt too good for the hardware generation it was released during and still does. Hope Matt’s able to cover more of this game and the LoK series in future installments.

YES!!! This was my favorite game as a teenager and still is one of my favorites today.

I'd love to see a "wha happun?" for this series. Especially when you get to Nosgoth, the psudo-sequel/alternate timeline thing that went multiplayer only.

Great video, and more videos about Legacy of Kain would be amazing! Soul Reaver's development in particular is fascinating, the initial concept of the game wasn't even as a LoK game. Soul Reaver also has a ton of cut content, including a planned boss fight with the last of Raziel's brothers being cut. Defiance ends the story somewhat abruptly, kind of a cliff hanger, since Amy Hennig left right after. A Wha Happun or something similar on Soul Reaver or the series in general would be awesome.

This series needs a resurgence so bad... the writing is so good. And the voice over and dialogue is AMAZING. When I did my reviews of Blood Omen and Soul Reaver I couldnt get enough of the VO. So damn good.

One of my favorite games of all time, played the series starting with Soul Reaver when I was 2 years old on Dreamcast. Man, would love to play again. Defiance was great also.
