In The Words of Manong Sam Buot

With the upcoming release of Manong Sam Buot's expanded and revised 2nd edition Balintawak book, I wanted to share a little video clip that would give you a peak into his personality.
A little background information - In late 2016 and throughout 2017 Manong Sam allowed me to film several of our many conversations. (Approximately five hours in total) We talked about the past, the present and the future of Balintawak. He allowed me to openly question and ask him anything. I couldn't honestly tell you how many bottles of wine we consumed or how many plates of food we shared. I just know that I was never thirsty or hungry... And sometimes when her would hand me a plate of something I had never heard or couldn't pronounce, I would ask him what it was... He would often reply "It's probably better you don't know..." And then he would belly laugh. Rest In Peace Manong, Salamat po - Scott Dillingham.

According to Guro Dan, when we spent time with him (off camera) doing interviews for The Bladed Hand Documentary, he was told by Floro Villabrille to call it "Kali". Many surmise that it was actually when Floro partnered with Ben Largusa that it was Ben who convinced him to use that term..Vince Maglinti Sr, whose family Floro lived with in Kauai confirmed that Floro called his system "escrima" before partnering with Ben.
