In the Rose Garden Today | Rose Courage | Porcelain Parfuma

Yes I know I’m putting out a lot of videos lately and I do feel a little bad taking up your YT feed space. But I think perhaps of interest to some. Come winter I will disappear I promise!
I indicate a few things towards the end.
The price of having these roses shipped into the uk whilst not surprising to me, is still something I’m hoping gets resolved soon.
And with some breeders here deciding to raise prices each year, I can’t help but think we are getting a deal that perhaps isn’t as good as led to feel.
Maybe I’m wrong but food for thought.
And that isn’t anything aimed at the small local breeders and distributors.

Thank you for talking about blind stems in earlier videos. I have two roses with this problem. I am going to do a little pruning in the next few days. I'm glad you gave a solution to this problem. Your new roses are beautiful. It's always fun to get a bargain. We have a nursery called High County were I can get band roses for 23 US dollars which is pretty cheap. There are other nurseries that sell the same plant for $50 or $60. Their older, but I don't mind babying my bands for a year or two.

£15 ! thats great, I called in to homebase for a few diy materials, checked out the annuals and noticd a familiar bloom poking its head out of the tangle of ‘bargain buys’, I found and Eden rose, looking like a HT, with several canes , all in bud, £25 quid 😮. I couldnt have left homebase without it, now in a big pot and foaming with blooms. Ive got two other Edens that were bareroot at £8 each and they’ventaken 4 and 5 years to start looking like anything. No fragrance but the blooms are something else. BTY I posted a pic of my garden on a FB rose group and in a few days its had about 1200 wows, loves, amazings etc 😊

Awesome. Love Eden. Ive said before my favourite actual flower I have in my garden. Mine is a few years old, potted and only this year started to see some decent stems. Next year I will have to replace the soil. But perhaps surprisingly my stems have been cut short and I’m not seeing monster stems come up and replace them. More like sturdy but short stems which suits me as I’ve no space for it to climb. What’s the Facebook group! Come come I wanna see it?

In my view the UK price is excessive, seems to be about £33 from local garden centres, I bought a few potted DA roses 6 or 7 years ago, don't think I'll be buying anymore. On the other hand Sainsbury's supermarket were selling bare root roses for £2.50 each over the winter, I bought a couple and one has flowered already and the other is in bud - a lot of fun.

Hi jay, I really enjoyed the “Germany visit” videos. Have you seen “Adorable” parfuma? It looks decent. I think for most people, as much as they like the DA roses, they are just really over priced. Especially when the majority of the Uk are on the bones of their arse at the moment 😂 They were a lot cheaper not so long ago. They have really whacked up the prices in the last few years. Check out Dickson roses as well (Irish breeder) they have some fantastic roses. Really healthy and really reasonably priced too 🤩 there is one called “A fond farewell” which has very similar colouring to “distant drums” 😁

Talking about prices, my newly bought Tantau roses, 2 Liters container climber is just 14,40 and 6 Liters well grown roses is 25,50. David Austin popular roses are even at 49,50. Beautiful roses ! Pure Poetry I just wanted to stick my nose in haha. I hear what you're saying re. pricing structures. I ordered 7 roses from the Netherlands at the end of Dec last year, they were delivered and planted by the 2nd week in Jan, excellent service and communication and almost no waiting time, there is naturally a hefty shipping cost to the UK but the individual roses were on average 5 euros, I think Chantall Thomass was around 7 euros, Eden was 5.50, Pastella was 4.50 ish and can't remember the price of the others off the top of my head but even with a high ship cost my total order was comparable to the price of two DA's. I would definitely order again, it was a trouble free transaction.

@@Jay_Jay Can you describe the perfume? Are you getting a strong apple or a strong citrus? as in lemons/limes as they do have very different fragrances. I just checked on Golden Valley and they have both Pink Perfection and Porcelain available. It does look quite a vivid pink in some clips. Hard to tell from the foliage. Perhaps email Kordes or Golden Valley for clarification, it's a beautiful rose though either way. @@soulgirlktf hi Linda I just filmed another video for Alex I’ll put it here aswell. Having looked at many photos of perfect perfume/beverly and porcelain Parfuma I’m convinced this is porcelain Parfuma. Also in this video it had just rained opening some of the petals more and I can see where the name porcelain comes from. You can see it more here. It is difficult to film the colour right but I added some photos at the end. It is a striking rose that does stand out but not neon pink as perhaps seen in the video. Regarding the scent you know I’m useless. I’ve just been outside smelling it and I just can’t break it down with all honesty. But it’s powerful and I would say perfume. I just checked a DA order for bare roots in October 2019 - they were £18 then, and now, almost 5 years later, the older bare roots are £23, which using an online compound interest calculator (it's like being back at school!) means an increase of 5% each year (Emma B. at £26.50 would be 8% p.a.). So DA roses have always been expensive, but as your visit to Germany shows, DA spend a lot more on their Albrighton garden, and probably a huge amount more on advertising, producing booklets, etc. We can of course buy some roses at bargain basement prices from online sellers and some outlets. But yes, overall you are making a valid point. Looking at Courage in your video shows how important it is to spot a rose at its best - I wouldn't look twice at it today whereas in your video it was a clear winner. The other 3 roses you show all look great. It's a bit sad that when we have no roses in the winter we also have to do without our fix of Jay Jay - couldn't you do a campervan tour of Australian garden centres in the winter? Not connected to anything, and you may have no idea but - do DA not usually bring out 2 new roses a year - is there likely to be a 2nd one this year?

  • @Jay_Jay

    @Jay_Jay

    13 күн бұрын

Hi nik and thanks for doing the math. But remember it’s not even bare root season just yet. That would be the time to check cost this year when it starts. I know companies have overheads. And I know the smaller suppliers and garden centres work their fingers to the bone for little in way of reward. But consider the German football league just for a moment. Season ticket prices their less than half what we pay here. And players in Germany earn far less per week than what premiership players earn here. That is something that is built from the ground upwards. Non of this trickle down economics. And yes it’s how a rose ages such an important aspect of what we like in our gardens :)

  • @Gez_rosa_newby

Hello Jay Jay, i agree £15 is a great price, especially direct from a breeder, it would be fantastic if we had that access, i wonder if we did, and there was real competition, then maybe we would not have to pay £36 for a new rose. Its not just DA, but i note that other new roses in the UK this year was not that much cheaper . Jay Jay there are so many beautiful roses in other countries that we just have no access to unless we buy in bulk and have all the paperwork if we are importing:( I know that you have opened my eyes to the others, also Dilly, as i used to be just DA, now Kordes, Tantau, Delbard, Poulsen to name a few:) Thank you

Yes Gez, I tried to touch on it in this video. The cost of importing roses from the eu is now ridiculous. This isn’t something that surprised me in the least. It may have surprised many but not me. Either way we are all now disappointed with the situation. Do we see cheaper roses at home? Nope! I can just hope that sooner or later the access to the eu roses will become more available to us the consumers. And I hasten to add English roses become more easily available to those in the eu.

Territories would join and unite if the son of one area, married the daughter of another and then the subsequent children and grandchildren for that matter would marry the off spring from different areas. It would be something that got agreed in advance. And I guess naming after someone would be another little sweetener in the deal! But once again I maybe wrong :)

Hi Jay jay. I am wondering if your porcelain parfuma is wrongly labelled? I have Carmen wurth of which porcelain is supposedly a sport and the flowers are completely different in shape. Also I think Porcelain is vary pale in colour, unlike yours. I am no expert but it almost looks like a mum in a million or something. Some of the kordes roses, though healthy, give me great difficulty in getting nice flowers. By the time they are open, (they take forever) I tend to have rain or morning dew damage on them. Having said that, spicy and bliss are undamaged by either, and especially spicy sets a humongous amount of flowers, though bliss is much much healthier.
