In The Ring with Mexico's Ultra-Violent Wrestlers

Ойын-сауық

In the early 2000s, a Mexican professional wrestler named “Crazy Boy” took a trip to check out an extreme, violent offshoot of the sport that was blowing up in Japan. When he got back, he started working to introduce the world of “lucha libre” to a fighting style with a little more edge-where wrestlers use knives, chairs, fluorescent lightbulbs, and high-risk maneuvers to leave their opponents as bloodied as possible.
VICE Mexico met up with Crazy Boy to find out how his own league, Total Ultra-Violent Disaster, or DTU, is spearheading the extreme pastime in his home country, catching a no-holds-barred match that left the ring covered in blood and broken glass.

    Its unfortunate that DTU in Mexico isn't doing well, stiffing wrestlers pay, putting wrestlers in dangerous hotels, and general lack of respect from it's owners. Top independent wrestlers like Conner Claxton and Lufisto have had some horrible tales to tell. Claxton is one of the founders of GCW the top deathmatch company on the states. Lufisto has been battling Cervical Cancer and got her big break doing Intergender death matches.

    CZW is a fairly new organization compared to when Deathmatch wrestling came about. Over in Japan, IWA was holding the Tournament of Death that had people like Terry Fuck, Cactus Jack, Terry Gordy, and a lot of others. I would be interested in seeing something about the actual start of this style of wrestling though.

  • @MardyBum100291

    @MardyBum100291

    And yet it's still over 15 years old. IWA would run Kawasaki Stadium, sure, but WING were also running the deathmatch scene in Japan for a good while, IWA had the notoriety because of the KOTDM that had the brutal Cactus/Funk final, but nobody really knows any of the stuff that IWA did outside of that tournament, it was more the American influence and names in it that really gave it the star power.

    pretty interesting how the hardcore style has evolved and changed more and more (It may have started down south in the States but, Onita & FMW pretty much lit the match that would become the boom period of Pro Wrestling in the mid to late 90’s without Onita there would be no ECW, without no ECW no WWF Attitude era without FMW & Onita there would have been no NWO invasion since WCW ripped-off FMW and there “Funk Masters of Wrestling invasion angle

    no, theyre still toxic. it would be a problem in a small, poorly-ventilated space; but in a wide-open arena, it's the fumes arent that big a deal. some of it does get in the wounds, and people do occasionally retire early from the cumulative effect of that, but it's far from the worst thing theyre doing to their bodies -- every long-term wrestler (not just deathmatch wrestlers) retires with serious knee injuries. "more safely" in this context means, avoiding serious lacerations, not slicing arteries, etc..
