In the Passage Arena - A short film.
Follow me, Dan Mercer from Mercer Falconry, through the year of 2022, my first official year of trading for my business. I have wanted my own bird of prey display business since 2013 and after almost a decade working for other people, I decided it was time to have a go for myself. This film brings you with us, month by month preparing for, leading to, and attending the country fairs and events done throughout the summer.
Living with birds of prey and training birds of prey has been a huge part of me for my entire working life so far, and doing falconry displays/ bird of prey displays has been the only career I can easily see myself doing for the rest of my life. Training a bird of prey for a display can be quite different to training a hawk for falconry.
As well as following the first year of business, I discuss my story and career leading up to owning and running my own business with trained birds of prey. I have worked for mobile falconry businesses, I have worked in falconry centres / zoos, I have worked in pest control with trained birds of prey, I have run a bird of prey centre, and now I own my own business, Mercer Falconry.
We have attended a range of events this year, some which feature in the film, and some don’t. we typically attend and provide displays at country fairs and festivals, we have also attended historical events, steam fairs, countryside fairs, charity events, and educational establishments. Some of the events featured in the film include Kelmarsh Country Show, Tamworth Castle, The Chester House Estate, Highclere Country Show / The British Falconry and Raptor Fair, Clifton Campville Country Fair, The Great Rempstone Steam and Country Fair, Alrewas Country Show, Southport Flower Show, Driffield Game and Country Fair.
As well as attending events, this film shows the preparation, and the training of various species of hawk such as training falcons, training hawks, training owls, training eagles, and raising an eagle chick from just 5 days old!

8pm There will be a live chat with me present for the first viewers!
I only found your channel today and have been binge watching. Raptors have always been a passion of mine since a child after also holding my first falcon aged 10. and was lucky enough to acquire some experience in a uk falconry centre in my late teens. I then dreamed of working with these majestic and beautiful birds but as life can be, it took a different route. I'm now 47 and live in Northern Germany and have just recently made some contacts again within the community. Watching this video was simply like re-living my dreams of back then (and now) Here in Germany there are strict licensing rules to own a bird of prey. A hunting licence is required and then the falconry licence, both which involve a lot to learn and final exams, which I totally agree with. It hinders hobby falconers somewhat, people who see them only as prestige objects to show off with, and "guarantees" a good understanding and welfare of the birds and hunting habitat. I really felt like that teenager once again watching this and would like to express my admiration for you in following your passion & dreams. One can see your love, care respect and understanding for the birds as equally as they show you. 100% wishing you all the best with Mercer Falconry, as of course with this channel. Thanks for this great video. Please keep them coming. Good luck and much success. James. Ps. You have definitely done your grandad proud

Oh wow thank you so much, we have loads planned for this winter too!
Looking into falconry, I was amazed to find how regulated that activity is and what is involved into becoming a falconer. What I found most interesting is that here in Michigan, the state allows only 2 chicks to be captured in the wild per year and the permits are only issued from a state wide lottery system.
Great film Dan Good Luck for the future

Definitely, I want to arrange a members day this winter where we can all spend the day flying birds then spend the evening in the pub and have you guys stay in the b&q in the village
I've wanted to take up falconry since I was a teenager. Finally I am financially in a position to go for it. But I turn 50 in a few months and figure it would be preferable for the bird/s if I were able to get hold of middle aged birds, seeing as they can live to 30 plus years. Would be looking to keep a cast of Haris' hawks. My question is: how often do birds become available at that age? Preferably from someone experienced who has been forced to stop and is looking for a new home for his/her birds. By the way, I enjoy your channel. Have been checking out a fair few of your videos. Keep it up.

They come up occasionally but I wouldn’t say often enough to be a reliable source of buying a bird

I have friends your age with juvenile Harris hawks, if you have one long enough you could always gift her to someone else who will continue to fly her when you no longer want to continue

@@MercerFalconry Yeah, I had considered that as the more likely route. Just thought it's maybe better for the birds to have continuity of one owner. Although I'm aware that they probably don't become attached to the degree of a faithful and loyal dog, for example. Appreciate the response.
Great Film Dan, I think all those years of hard work have payed off, lets make the 2023 season even better

Makes me a bit emotional Dan actually, you've worked so hard. I do have a question though...what is your favourite bird to fly?
@MercerFalconry
Жыл бұрын
Thank you that really means a lot. It’s tough to pick a favourite because they are all so different, I love watching Sway with all his personality, I love watching Kit circle around above me, I love taking the hawks out on a hike, I love swinging a lure for a falcon, and I love watching the eagles get up and soar around, I couldnt pick a favourite!
Best of luck to you!
It is so good to see new content! I'd love to see some more of your beginners videos.

@MercerFalconry

People tend to just use a cable tie through the eyelet of the anklet, the only time I leg mount is when my birds have moulted their deck feathers, otherwise they are all tail mounted
