    Just a thought: it seems that both Thranduil and Elrond knew Thror ( Thorin's grandfather) and Thranduil was comfortable enough w/ Thror to be able to tell Thror directly that he was doing a foolish thing by amassing so much gold. Thorin is one of the "younger" generation of dwarves in Thranduil's eyes. So it is almost disrespectful for Thorin to take the attitude that he did towards Thranduil (imagine behaving that way w/ your grandparents' friends!); especially since Thranduil only asked for one thing - the jewels in the casket that Thror denied him earlier (w/ a smirk at Thranduil's pain). He could have demanded much more for his support since they were still in the early stages of haggling; but perhaps there was a little more sympathy from Thranduil for the sake of old times than Thorin was willing to admit. Thorin was too headstrong.

    +elleevne Have to keep in mind that regardless of age, Thorin is himself the rightful King Under the Mountain. This is something that Thranduil even acknowledges. "One king to another". Therefore, when they're speaking to each other it's as equals, even though Thranduil is naturally in a position of greater power at that moment. Especially as Thranduil makes it clear that there's something he desperately wants in the Lonely Mountain, which only Thorin and Company know how to safely get into. There's also the very real fact that Thorin has an excellent reason to hold a grudge against Thranduil, whereas Thranduil has no reason to bear one towards Thorin specifically. It was Thror who denied Thranduil the jewels, not Thorin. Yet it was Thranduil who ignored the Dwarves in their time of need and afterwards. Based on appearance alone i'd say that Thranduil even feels some amount of guilt towards this, as when Thorin's yelling at him about it he has no response and looks almost sad.

  • @elleevne928

    @elleevne928

    +Orochi2345678 Good points. However, it was not really clear that Thranduil ignored the dwarves at all. He was not about to send his people to their deaths against Smaug. If his aid to the people of Laketown , despite the movie's (not the book's) reason to do so, was any indication, Thranduil probably gave what aid he could to the dwarves at the time. But the elves would not have sheltered the dwarves in their forests; even the patient old Ents did not want dwarves in their forests. Their forests were their livelihood, just as the mountains were for the dwarves. I agree that Thranduil probably was sympathetic and did feel bad that he couldn't have done more. But, if the movie's rendition is to be followed, Thorin was just as impolite towards Elrond. If Rivendell was sitting as close to Erebor as the Greenwood, he might not have put up w/ it either. I'm not sure that "One king to another" acknowledges Thorin as a king. At this point, he is not. This is a courtesy for the sake of negotiation. As Thranduil noted, Thorin needed the Arkenstone to legitimize his right to the kingship.

  • @Orochi2345678

    @Orochi2345678

    8 жыл бұрын

    elleevne I'd say it was fairly clear. You saw it happen first in the opening of An Unexpected Journey, just as you see Thror snub Thranduil by not giving him the jewelry. You then have Thorin make the second claim that Thranduil ignored his people when they were starving afterwards, and Thranduil never counters him and Thorin is never treated as wrong. There's no evidence anywhere within the film that Thorin's wrong either or that Thranduil ever helped the Dwarves. The fact that he brought something for the people of Laketown doesn't then mean that he did the same for the Dwarves, when there's again no indication of him having done so, people claim he didn't do so, and the film never treats it as if he did so. Thorin was impolite towards Elrond, as his grudge against Thranduil spread towards all Elves, just as Thranduils grudge against Thror spreads towards all Dwarves. The films treat both characters as containing their own unique and similar flaws in this manner. I don't see how "One king to another" isn't Thranduil acknowledging Thorin as a king. There's no one else there and no one else he could be speaking about. He's obviously a king and he's calling Thorin a king as well, a station of equal value. Notably, Gandalf does the same thing later when Thorin doesn't even have the Arkenstone, as do the Dwarves. Thorin's their king regardless of whether he has it or not. Having it just serves as a visual object for him to rally around, being a testament to his deeds. What's more, as I previously noted, Thranduil fully admitted that he had a stake in the events as there was something he wanted in the mountain, which is the entire reason he later marches his army towards it, risking countless lives. As I pointed out Thorin and Company were the ones who knew the way into the Mountain, which Thranduil acknowledged, so he needed them just as much as they needed him, because without them he'd never get his wife's jewels, regardless of what he did.

    +Orochi2345678 The opening of Unexpected Journey shows the dwarves fleeing from the gate of Erebor from Smaug. For Thorin to expect Thranduil to send his army into a no-win suicidal situation when he and his people are already running for their lives is asking a bit much. Thranduil did not have to go through the massive operation of bringing his army to Erebor at all. He already knew there was no possibility of defeating Smaug - having fought dragons before. He was there to help if there was a chance that they would not have to face Smaug directly. Thorin didn't exactly jump right in when the orcs attacked in BOFA - even to help his kin who wouid not have been there if they hadn't responded to HIS call. Thorin's rudeness towards elves has more to do w/ him than any overall grudge against Thranduil. Thranduil's issues against dwarves has less to do w/ Thror in particular but rather w/ his past experiences w/ dwarves in Doriath. Not the same thing at all. It seemed to me that Gandalf's comment to Thorin at the gate when he wanted to throw Bilbo over the side was in a sarcastic vein - not an acknowledgement of Thorin's kingship at all. More in the tone of "if you want to be a king, you need to behave like one" i.e. grow up, you're not king yet despite your crown. Even Dwalin and his nephews Fili and Kili and his oldest friend Balin have doubts when Thorin starts making unreasonable demands. I stand by my contention that Thranduil was willing to treat w/ Thorin as equals as a courtesy and for the sake of his past acquaintance w/Thror. Under the circumstances, he could have nailed Thorin to the wall with demands; but he didn't. The films' depictions of both Thranduil and Thorin did not do justice to the characters in the book, who were less extreme. The whole jewels subplot was not in the book and not needed in the films

    elleevne By the time Thranduil arrives at Erebor the battle is over and the kingdom is lost, so that's a moot point. The issue is that the Dwarves are then seen running away from Erebor, an untold number dead and an untold number wounded. They literally have nothing but the clothes on their backs, the weapons in their hands, and whatever else they can carry, and Thranduil doesn't help them at all. Him marching the troops there and then leaving is the issue, as is the fact that he makes no effort to help the Dwarves in the years that follow. Him marching his troops there is nice, but doesn't mean much since he didn't do anything with them at the end of the day. All he really did was waste his own time to look Thorin in the face and then snub him and the other Dwarves. No. Within the film the grudges are shown to specifically start due to Thranduil and Thror and then Thorin and Thranduil. You literally see the moment that this happens and it's mentioned time and again later. Thorin directly argues with Gandalf over this issue, pointing out how the Elves (Thranduil's elves) betrayed his grandfather and left his people to suffer. Seems to me that Gandalf and Thranduil were both still acknowledging Thorin as a king. Gandalf was pointing out that Thorin wasn't doing the best job of it, but was still acknowledging him as a king, as did his own people later in the film once they arrived for battle, even though he still didn't have the Arkenstone. I stand by my point that Thranduil acknowledged Thorin as a king and dealt with him as equals after he proclaimed so. Did he have to? Of course not. But he chose to and made the point, when he also didn't have to, of calling Thorin a king. One of the factors for him doing so was then because he had a stake in the quest once he figured out what it was and in turn wanted to gain something from it. I personally enjoyed the film just fine with the new subplot and think that while it was a change and not necessarily required that it was a suitable one and didn't ruin any character involved. I actually prefer Thranduil in this than his appearances in the book itself. The Dwarves in turn are then given somewhat more memorable and distinctive personalities in my opinion as well.

    Thorin seems to have forgotten that his grandfather's greed resulted in the break with Thranduil. He asked for one thing and they disrespected him. Why should any King then involve himself and his people to fight and die for the petty battles which ensued so the dwarfs could keep their amassed wealth.

    I dont think that was the sole reason of thranduil not helping them, I dont think thranduil is that petty to blame thorin for his grandfather’s greediness. He might’ve noticed that he was already showing the “dragon sickness” symptoms and wasn’t willing to sacrifice the lives of his kins because he knew what it is like to face a dragon and how hard it is to warn/convince a person who has the sickness (his grandfather)

  • @miki03soimu

    The "great serpents" are dragons bred by Morgoth during the First Age to be used in war. Morgoth's realm was in the North of Beleriand (West of Middle Earth, under the sea in the time of "The Hobbit"), with the great fortress of Angband as capital. Thus, the dragons were originally bred in the North and attacked from the North. What Thranduil means is "I have faced the first dragons ever existing, the original ones, made by Morgoth himself, who were far greater than your Smaug". Thranduil was most likely born at the beginning of the First Age in Doriath. At the end of the First Age, when the War of Wrath against Morgoth took place, Thranduil was a young elf, but old enough to fight and the supposition is that he somehow found himself in/around the battles where dragons were released against elves, thus "facing" the "serpents of the North". The question is if a Sindarin elf went to fight alongside the Noldor and the Vanyar in that war, but young people do unusual and heroic stuff, so he might have been foolish enough. He might have also been a "civilian victim", as I doubt dragons asked people about their ethnicity before frying them when they ran loose. However, Thranduil's actual involvement in a battle against dragons is a speculation from Peter Jackson's team, developed after Lee Pace came with the idea that Thranduil was aware of what a dragon could do and he might have seen other dragons in his long life (fair enough, you don't need to be hit by a nuclear bomb to know what it can do, right?). The scar is for dramatic effect; whether it is still present and covered by magic, or has healed and is summoned back just to prove a point, is not so important. No reference to Thranduil's actual encounter with a dragon is present in the books, so this is not canon.

    @@angeramirez25 Thranduil was old enough to see Menegroth and to remember it, as he took Menegroth as a model for his halls underground. Menegroth fell in FA 506 and the War of Wrath ended in 587, so 80 after the Fall of Doriath. Dragons were released only towards the end of the war. Thranduil was at least 80+ years old at that time, but he could have well been much older than that, as his date of birth is not known actually. Being 80+ years old, he was at least close to maturity (let's say like a human 18-20-years-old). However, it is more likely that he was born earlier than the end of the First Age, because there were troubled times, and elves did not tend to marry and have children during war.

    @@miki03soimu by your explanation, it looks like a very interesting saga for the first age of elves. They are portrayed selfish in The Hobbit but I wander what it was like before they got branded that way.
