I have the lyrics to almost all the songs memorized, the only one I don’t have fully memorized is learn to do, specifically learning the names of all the relatives (and I recall his yellow cat! I don’t believe we told her that?). I basically have the entire movie memorized :)

For instance the scene where he hunts down Esmeralda and almost burns a family in their home is incredibly unnerving, especially since the main driving force of his ferver is Esmeralda. In comparison, Rasputin is not really as much of a presence or threat in Anastasia with the exception of the first and last scene he's in.

They could have gone with something way simpler to animate on such a scale, like rats or snakes, or even just some small gremlin looking creatures. You hear gunshots twice in the song. “My curse made each of the pay, but one little girl got away!” *BANG* When the Soviets executed the Tsar’s family, Anastasia didn’t die immediately, as she has sewed Jewels into her dress so the soldiers didn’t take them, which slightly protected her from the original volley. “I’ll see her crawl into place!” *BANG* is a reference to the story that when they went to move the bodies, Anastasia and her brother Alexi were crawling slightly so they shot them again.

Because villains are the most complex characters. The good guys are simple. They are good, beautiful, caring and honorable. Villains on the other hand have complex reasons to do bad things. Some are ambitious. Some are gelous. Some want revenge for a wrongdoing that was done to them. Some believe that what they are doing is actually good and others think about a greater good.

This is by far the best villianous villian song ever. I mean. Almost every villian song is about some material ambition. Power, greed, idealism. They always want something. Rasputin doesnt give a shit about stuff like that. He is not interested in the crown or their riches or the country. He just wants to murder people and the thought off him torturing Ana and finally killing her fills him with pure joy. He names revenge as his ambition, but seriously, whos going to believe him, if he has such a blissful expression on his face, while singing about murder and torture. He is a seriously evil and sadistic psychopath and he loves it.

Indeed. And while most villain songs sound fittingly menacing, this one actually sounds *triumphant*, and the main chorus almost sounds *heroic*. A small fact from the Russian version of this song. In the Russian voice acting, the moment at 2:03 Rasputin does not say the word "minion", but "Hey, all the evil spirits that are subject to me." If you translate the essence into English, then in the Russian translation Rasputin almost in plain text appeals to the imps and demons from Hell.

All of this happened in one night. He was all beat to near death by some dudes with crucifixes, and stabbed by a girl with no nose. He could apparently make a horse healthy just by touching it (multiple cases where he did this), and also the prince was a very sickly kid, but every time rasputin showed up the kid magically got better. Coupled with a charismatic personality, always found that Vengeance was the best motivation for a villain. There has been this tendency of more complex and even sympathetic villains in the past two decades or so, and it’s all well and good - However I always found that there’s something about revenge that immediately generates connection, even when the character is obviously evil and his revenge envolves doing something terrible. Like, greed and jealousy are too petty, and “take over the world/kingdom” too vague and megalomaniac. But even those who aren’t vengeful can get on board with the feeling of getting comeuppance for “a perceived wrong” even if it isn’t something justified (and again the character is explicitly evil) just on a emotional level there’s that mischievous side on us that relates (on fiction) with a character hellbent on getting his revenge.

I love that Christopher Lloyd gave his voice for this film. He was great and scary in this film, next to Judge Doom in Roger Rabbit. And Jim Cummings' voice was a great pick for his singing voice. He was great in Be Prepared, and he was great in this, too. If this was the first time you'd hear Jim Cummings's voice, you probably wouldn't really be able to tell the difference aside from the fact that Rasputin's speaking voice has a Russian accent and his singing voice doesn’t. All in all, a great song.

For context sake, keep in mind he was supposed to have been shot multiple times(Including in the head), and beaten with metal rods(Or dumbells. But no matter which way you slice it, being beaten by heavy pieces of metal would probably kill a man).

Rasputin isn't on the musical, they've wanted to make something more realistic, but the instrumental of this song is used on Stay, I Pray You

@@icarofernandes ...realistic? But the dude was an actual figure-- and he was thought to be a wizard or whatever because they tried to kill him like 4 times. All times would've been successful with any other person. Ya know- poison, gunshot (this was... A couple times), knife wound- the whole shebang. (Disclaimer: I haven't seen the musical but now that I think about it, were they following Anastasia being a fake?)

  • @icarofernandes

@@ashtheintroverted7204 oh yes, I've read about him, I found very interesting actually ^^ What I mean with realistic is that the musical is more focus on the revolution by itself, the villain is Gleb, he's the son of one of the Bolsheviks that were responsible for the night the Romanov's were murded, they told what actually happened, historically speaking, in the musical to this point. Then Anastasia manages to flee the family execution but end up being shot, the cause of her amnesia 10 years later, 1927, the captain of the Bolsheviks now is Gleb, that after an encounter with Anastasia (now Anya) ends up falling in love with her Although the basis of the musical is the movie, they needed to add some things, and Gleb's storyline fit well on the stage. Personally, I don't think Rasputin would be a good character on stage, I think it would be very hard for them to keep his essence like the animation, but Gleb got the work done, and Ramin Karimloo is perfect on the role If you're interested, I highly recommend for you to look the Anastasia (musical) Wikipedia page, it has the description of the entire musical, and of course, you can listen to the cast recording on Spotify or other streaming service, the songs are AMAZING, Christy Altomare as Anastasia was the perfect choice, my favourite songs are In My Dreams, an Anastasia solo were she sings about the things she remembers of her life that she always sees in her dreams; the other song is In a Crowd of Thousands, an Anastasia & Dmitry duet, when they remember the first time they met each other as kids, but never forgotten about
