One of the things I really like about Elite Dangerous is that it offers a single player mode and you can switch back and forth. I get sick of trying to do a mission or learn a new ship only to have some PK lowlife fly in and blast you for the fun of it, especially when you are just learning how to play. It is one reason why I dumped Star Citizen. Sometimes you just want to relax and enjoy the game without worrying about immature players. This looks pretty good.

Star Citizen is unlikely to be a completely PvP game once there are more systems to play in. Sure in some areas there will be a higher risk but PvP is unlikely to be a main focus simply because of the risk vs reward and the reputation system. It's going to be fascinating to see it develop once real players get their hands on the mechanics of Star Citizen especially when we are able to travel to Pyro & other systems.

Any sort of more realistic space sim has me hooked. I like realistic flight models where flying is truly skilful (see Flight of Nova), and a more ‘Expanse style’ game would really work for me. I just wish Elite Dangerous had been heavily invested in and a sequel was being developed, because that’s where the true potential is for the genre. The Daddy of space sims shouldn’t die out in the way it currently is.

You are right, there's very little realism in that - still the same old Elite 2/Elite 3 type of a game. Sprinkling a space game with some Newtonian mechanics does not automatically promote it to a "space sim". Oftentimes even having orbital mechanics added does not help with that either.

@@getsideways7257 they do not have "drag" in space like Star Citizen or Elite Dangerous, you can go way faster (they may have a speed limit of something like 50Km/s or something like that because of technical limitations or past that point it becomes impossible for players to aim and shoot at anything with mouse and keyboards or joystick, but anyway this is much much more than the 400+ m/s of Elite Dangerous for example, and enough to have a authentic space "flight" experience) and engagements occur in a distance far greater that the typical WWII in space of Star Wars or Battlestar Galattica that those games are trying to recreate. You also have to account for limited fuel in your burns to change your delta v, your ship doesn't have infinity fuel (Star Citizen and Elite fuel consumption is basically only relevant for FTL flight).

@@VitorHugoOliveiraSousa Elite 2 and Elite 3 (the Frontier games) had no speed limit either, and that was all the way back in the '90s. Also, it was probably the first games where lasers worked pretty much like lasers, and you could actually man a turret. Still does not make it much of a sim. By the way, there is even a remake available - look up FFED3DAJ. Now, try Children of a Dead Earth, on the other hand, and you'll see what an actual space combat sim should be closer to.

@@VitorHugoOliveiraSousa they changes star citizen's flight system alot of that drag you mentioned is gone unless of course your coupled that's just automatic engine decelerations all in all the flight is starting to feel more realistic while balancing arcade like options the combat flight has been slowed down in the master modes now with a focus on accuracy and acrobatics rather than high speed jousting since they intend for group strategy to take a dominating role rather than a single fighter taking out multiple ships one at a time, it does mean solo play is gonna suffer but they want it to bring players together! and shields have been removed while out of combat so ofc it's not gonna have that star trek feel where you can move really fast while the shields are up that is just gone they've done it to make people think twice about running away Nav and quantum mode is 0 shields now! I can't say much for many other ships but I've tried my Syulen, the Avenger Titan and the Cutlass Red and they all move far smoother and more agile than they used to it feels responsive! This game reminds me of seeing clips of star citizen cockpit and HUD's during early development when people could only visit their hangars.... but I'm assuming they're taking the traditional design philosophy of "make it play good and then make it look better with polish when the core game mechanics and features are complete" which sometimes I wish CIG would of followed but I don't think SC would be what it is had it done that... as for ITB I hope we see it flesh out into it's own style and unique play! but I will say it is close to decoupled I've found myself flung past space stations with the decoupled on too and having to manually compensate swinging myself around into a 180 and thrusting in the opposite direction it's satisfying don't let other peoples footage of SC fool you theres physics it's just some people are show offs and can make it look non newtonian with the moves they pull!

so essentially it is a combat sim. Flight model is pretty much the same as non-assisted mode in many games starting from space engineers from what I can tell; although the degree of fidelity depends from how well the gravitational pull is simulated... One thing is to make everything mass-less and just slap thrusters on a ship, another is to simulate mass and gravitational pulls of different objects and interactions among objects, which is something very few games do because it is quite computationally intensive (and most players can't even tell the difference). Play something like Kerbal or Juno or Orbital and you can see what I mean

Jack and I have full-time day jobs (which allows us to work on this for no pay). To be fair, we did a pretty good job of fulfilling our Kickstarter campaign. The backers all received keys in 2018, and since then the game has been updated and expanded well beyond what the campaign promised. The main obstacle right now is implementing a robust dedicated server feature. We discovered issues in how the backend architecture was implemented that have been very difficult to resolve. We want to ensure a stable multiplayer experience so that the EA goes well. Another issue was that the company we partnered with for in-game feedback went out of business and we need a new solution for that as well.

I remember reading some coverage of this a long time ago suggesting a problem they were having was how to make this both realistic and fun. This is a problem that has bedeviled every space Sim since multiplayer became a thing with X-Wing versus TIE fighter. How do you make a Newtonian physics game that is essentially just turn aim shoot, turn aim shoot, over and over where your battle is more against control than it is shooting the other person? The brilliance I-War I think that's the only one to really nail it and be fun while I felt the sequel, trying to translate the same idea into a small fighter as this game tries to do, lost the same feel. It is challenging, and I wish them well getting it right!

@@BrokenGauge Asteroids also has Newtonian physics, but it's still Asteroids. What people should realize is that orbital mechanics makes a space sim - not "Newtonian physics". In fact, the latter is even easier to implement than atmospheric flight. Also, a proper space combat sim is more of Scorched Earth than it is Asteroids, because you'd be busy hitting anything from NAVAL distances with TURRETS (and missiles) all the while accounting for orbital motion rather than dogfighting other "planes in space" from just a few clicks while keeping the nose on the predicted point while free-floating in a pretty cramped volume of nothing. Give Children of a Dead Earth a try and you'll realize just how wrong all these other space games are in portraying space combat.

Not sure if people are still playing Free Allegiance (the F2P release) nowadays, but they might. Microsoft released the source code quite a while ago, and players were managing releases for quite a while from what I saw when I checked up on it several years back. I'm not really strongly recommending the game (it was fun, unique, and quite deep for its time, but not really "worth playing 24 years later" deep), as I certainly ended up playing *Natural Selection (2002)* far longer (not a space sim, just a very deep FPS/RTS hybrid).

This feels quite nothing like the Expanse mate, as it's got fighters. Instant red flag. If it was suitably like the Expanse, you'd have larger ships, like the Rocinante, as the baseline. Smaller ships like a Razorback wouldn't really have much for weapons. Basically all the combat would still mostly just go in straight lines and cover long, multi-million-km trajectories through space as they race away under thrust and the whole dynamic would come down to the human ability to handle extended G-forces, and decisions to maneuver vs accelerate and where that means a torpedo or slug up the drivecone. This looks like a promising space fighter game on is own merits tho. And having more realistic inertial physics is indeed a great plus.

Is there a speed limit in space? This is where most space games fck it up. Space engineers, Elite Dangerous, etc. You can drift, but you have a ridiculously low top speed. In space, as long as you keep burning, you keep accelerating. "Speed" doesn't really matter, only delta V which is the difference in thrust required to chance speed relative to an object. So delta V to match speed with a space station would be different from matching speed with a ship traveling nearby, and different from landing on a planet, etc. I have never seen a game that actually got this right. KSP is by far the closest, though it still has some issues when landing on planets with atmosphere.

No. Combat engagements are typically only 10-20 minutes and take place in a battlespace that is 20-80 kms across. The ships are powered by closed cycle gas core nuclear reactors, so they have enough power to ignore orbital mechanics (in this context). Starting in your fighter with real space simulation motion, and you could improve your fight per kill or upgrade to bigger and bigger ships up to battleships and carriers. You could take your ship anywhere to any planet and defend or capture outpost while fighting both NPCs and Players mixed in together amongst different factions. Game was released just a few years ago and while currently still on steam, guess what its current player count is per day...3 (And lets keep in mind, the Game is perfect! Its super fun! Combat is out of start wars!) And no, im not naming the game, they need to make it F2P so i wont' throw business their way. Reason for its death? These games have a very small fan base and to make matters far far worse....it was not F2P. No one buys semi AA games (Let alone space games) So this game is already DOA if its not F2P, that is just how the industry works. To make matters worse, instead of open world, you said it has "match making" That is by far even more unappealing to space gamers. There is not ONE (1) single "MATCH MAKING" space duel combat game on that market, and there never has been that didn't die with in just a couple of months. Dreadnought tried and failed along with many others. Duel combat space games are boring. Open world is far more appealing but also fails every time. But sure, buy the game, play it, just don't expect the game population to ever grow, it only gets worse and worse week after week.
