In Residence: Kelly Wearstler

The LA property was built in the Georgian Revival style with a barrel-vaulted entry fit for the arrival of any Hollywood luminary. As a designer, Wearstler’s home reflects her artistic practice and finely honed sense of color and shape. Throughout the rooms, visitors can spot goat hair upholstery, graphic runners, bold silhouettes and a treasure trove of artisanal furniture, all enclosed by high-gloss white walls.

It is surprising to see Kelly freaking Wearstler's own home is so muted and minimal. Her signature style we see in her clients' homes are usually super bold with a very maximalist sensibility. However, she went with a cleaner palette for her own home to take a break from all the boldness that she is expected, while respecting the character of the classic architecture. The bathroom is where we see her play! That stone work is incredible.

Hi, just a small correction in your comment that this house was not minimal. A minimal design is where we see least number of lines, joints or connections. This is more of a balanced space. I believe later the post owner must have replaced some of the furniture or decor items as per his/her taste ( 'bold' as you mentioned ).

It is now, but she changes it v often in a lot of her publications she has this house but it filled with huge bold colours. Being the designer she is swaps it around depending on how she feels. Also at the time she was putting the house on the market so she needs to target a broader market. Lucky enough TOM FORD purchased this beautiful home. Let’s hope he changes the driveway tho. 😂

I worked in the hospitality design world in L.A. for years & Kelly Wearstler was know as a horrible employer. One of my best friends worked there for a few years & she said it was traumatizing. She treats her employees like slaves, pays barely enough to survive & never pays overtime. She gets young blood that is excited to work for her & then works them to the bone.

Because everyone has a different taste and ideology. Perhaps those who really could connect to the other architectural videos on this channel were not able to connect to this one. As an architect and in my own opinion, what really matter is ' story '. There should be a story behind every design, an emotion which everyone should be able to feel even if the narrator is not speaking in English. Other projects on this channel has that potential. This one, I'm afraid appeared bland.

if you compare her workspace to her home is very different, it is evident that she finds solace and rest in her vast and quiet home that is filled with light, nature inviting itself in an orderly manner to convey a sense of peace and tranquility which is a big mental break from so much visual stimuli she gets while at work from all the various colors textures and design concepts that she has to develop. I think she is clever at creating a space to charge her batteries and gain inspiration again and again. I think its marvelous she can enjoy this luxurious home, it only makes perfect sense to make it her own.

There’s something off about this place, absolutely beautiful building and windows (and bathroom!) but seems to be a layer of something missing. It seems to be more of an on-trend instagrammable home that won’t age well, vs. one with substance and being thought out with life, layers and creativity in mind. I’m not familiar with the homeowner, might be instagram famous? Everything is subjective and as long as the family are happy in their space - I can only voice my opinion

It's evident from her body position and the way she talks about the space that she doesn't belong in that house - it's not her home. The house is beautiful. Her intervention is very nice, she has made it in her home. We all live differently and we design the modify the. Space around us to satisfy our perception of beauty. If they enjoy living there that is all that matter. When I design a space I develop a deep relationship with my client to better understand who my client is and how they will inhabit their new home. I recently remodelled a home for a retired couple and I was surprised by their wanting to bring their home into a more contemporary style. They even decided to let go of some old pieces of furniture that have been with them for a long time.

It's unfortunate, because I looked up the home and it looks like it used to have some, but was all removed and replaced with the most generic of contemporary looks. It has to be one of the most boring homes from the entire 'In Residence' series. Usually with these you can get a good sense of who the owner is by their home, or at the very least some areas of it, but I get nothing here.

You can really see how she has no deep, abstract and personal conection to space. It's really a Status Symbol when you analyse it under historical, botanical, architectural and sociological viewpoints. But yeah.. we see how people get shallow and easyly fascinated when money fools as something different. But it lacks the meaningful, personal dimension beyond the ideals and implementations of society. And she lacks that too..

A little clarification - she actually means the previous owner worked as a Producer to bring the Bond character created by British writer Ian Fleming to the big screen. Totally left me shaken & stirred for a moment there with confusion. The property is stunning however - very nice.

Agreed. I'm from California originally. Though it's been over 25 years since I've lived there, my accent comes out every once in a while. Usually when I'm not being very present. :/

I was just thinking "sterile" when I read this comment. Everything is so pristine and perfect and meticulous that any semblance of a lived-in home is gone. For the record, I think it's beautiful as a museum piece.
