Puerto Rico’s government stop caring about the grid back in 1960’s didn’t become a major issue till the 2000’s

We were without power for 11 months. Then A.E.E. tried to charge us for the electric we did not have.

Big difference between transmission and generation.

I'm not a LUMA fan, but in fairness to the discussion here, LUMA is responsible for the transmission of power and not the generation of it. Too many YT vids don't tend to clearly make that distinction or point it out through their vids. Even here in PR, where we should know better, way too many people don't make that distinction either - especially when venting/ranting. The generation continues to be - mostly - in the hands of the non-privatized part of the previous state power monopoly. A lot of those plants are very old and the only newer power plants that have opened in recent times are some private ones; however, they only represent about 25% of the power production here now (and only 5% of grand total is wind/solar). What I don't know is what % solar has become with private individuals putting up panels on their roofs.

That whole generation vs distribution argument is just LUMA/NPP propaganda. They didn't have to split the two, it was more convenient for them to set a fall guy. That is why there are still paid Facebook advertising campaign run by NPP shell companies pushing that bogus argument. I pay Luma for power, if they cannot work with their many suppliers that is on them. Jay

The leadership needs to change if they are to receive a majority coverage of renewable energy. Too many greedy and corrupt politicians running rampant and being allowed to do whatever and line their pockets.

There are parts of the island that have done it. Renewables aren’t going to be as effective over here. Specially due to hurricanes. We need a power service that provides energy to urban areas of the island. But for rural areas, renewables are best. Plus, we don’t have a lot of space available for renewables. We want to keep land to farm so we can have food production to sustain ourselves.

You really need a nuclear plant and that's really costly and needs security etc...or a gas pipeline project from the Gulf coast. Renewable energy is not sufficient like the guy said.

Renewable energy is not cheap or cost effective to run. PR's energy costs are more expensive as it is when compared to the states but cheaper than Hawaii. Even if ran at 100% ( there is already some sectors that run on renewable energy in PR) they will depend on the old relay and ineffective lines LUMA are adjusting now.

they steal billions a year and nobody does anything, the most corrupted goverment there is, look into the schools all the millions they get for the schools and they are falling apart and most of them are closed, kids 2 and 3 years old that can barely say a word because there is no education and what future our kids going to have? it is at a point where if something dramatic does not happen soon we will be lost forever!

When I lived in Puerto Rico in the 1970s and 1980s, we would have blackouts every month. We where quite used to not having power for hours at a time. We lived in an urban area of San Juan too.

So the funding to repair the grid went to the wrong company LUMA. They should of given it to a chinese power company. The grid would be new and weather proof years ago. The people there are tired of leaving the A/C off because of the electric bill is a Rippoff for decades now.

Does anyone know what specifically is causing the recent outages? Is it a power generation issue (problems at the power plant) OR is it a power distribution issue (cables downed by trees, transformers going down, maintenance outages, etc.)? I was hoping this would be addressed by the Luma CEO.

  • @ajaugatarip5285

Most of the issues comes from power plants. The government still owns generation. Luma just took over distribution and transmission
