The Puerto Rican island that kicked out the U.S. Navy

Hi Bianca - I just discovered your channel when I caught the video you did on Maui, which sparked my interest in your videos on your home, Puerto Rico. Your work is brilliant - you present the issues in a simple, easy to understand fashion, telling the story through the eyes of the locals, and it is a pleasure to watch, and makes us pause, think, and reflect as well. You are hitting a lot of the right buttons, particularly about the impact of foreign investment, mass tourism, and the displacement of people - which in various ways is happening all over the world from Sydney to Bangkok, to London to Puerto Rico. Thanks to you and your team for the great work you are doing, I wish you all the success in the world. Ivan M. Paton p.s. You might consider adding a products shop if. you don't have one already, come up with some great designs for t-shirts, cups, caps etc., about Puerto Rico - every source of income helps.

The thing is..once they illegally give these permits and they dig and/or build even a little, the ecological impact is already there and it’s very hard to reverse. It can’t be that the politicians/people who work for these agencies are just giving away permits like nothing, and then when they get caught and challenged, they take away the permit and nothing happens to them. The people unlawfully giving away these permits need to face the consequences of their actions. Otherwise, they’ll keeping doing it for bribes and hoping they don’t get caught and the damage will keep happening. Fixing the ecological damage of even not a fully constructed edifice still involves a lot of $$ and effort to reverse. It can take decades to reverse the damage caused and sometimes, it can’t be reversed. I’ve done some conservation work here in the states and when I visit the island, it drives me insane how there seem to be a lot of ecological violations that many times are ENDORSED or even built by the mayors office/the government. Even some communities in the mountains are like a concrete/asphalt jungle, contrary to the tropical surroundings which you have to look over to see; that’s how much concrete/asphalt some places have. Anyway, great reporting as usual. Proper reporting that’s constantly missing in the mainstream press, especially American mainstream press (I wonder why - go figure).

As is the case in all elective societies, you get the government you vote for..as long as puerto ricans continue voting for whoever promises them easy times, and no-pain solutions and claims they can keep the party going with more debt, PR will continue its slide. No one will lend to a perpetual deadbeat. The only politician speaking any truth in recent times was Fortuno, and we see what the voters did with him. Something for nothing has a powerful allure in the states for sure, but PR seems even more steeped in financial delusion, borne of economic ignorance that thinks government money is “free” money.

I have been visiting Culebra for almost 10 years now and its become a yearly pilgrimage. The first time walked down the little path to Flamenco Beach was such a magical experience. Crystal clear waters, brilliant sand, beautiful Caribbean clouds overhead. Yesterday I walked out to the beach and it brought tears to my eyes. It is now completely covered in sargassum seaweed and so much trash, plastic bottles plastic bags cups forks spoons just left all over the place sticking out of the seaweed. The flamenco redevelopment authority, or whatever it’s called has torn down all the old kiosks and now for the last few years the entire parking area is in complete chaos. It also seems no one is maintaining the beach. Does anyone know what is really going on with the situation there.? They’ve also cut off access to Carlos Rosario. I want to thank Bianca for her excellent reporting on the current situation on this island.

According to the news and those interviewed on t.v., revealed that the US was making monies by having various of countries to do their military belgic practices exercises there. Some of the Vieques protestors were arrested, while others that escaped came to the media to revealed what they had uncovered. Puerto Rican governor had no clue that the foreigners from other countries were doing there belgic and air missile practices. Saludos Bianca.

Your journalism is amazing!! You’re teaching the history of Puerto Rico that they NEVER teach us in school & NEVER cover on other news stations. Keep going!!! This is so important!!!

the question is WHICH puerto ricans decide? You have elections -- but keep electing people who perpetuate the same problems.

I freedive over there in el muellicito all the way to the deep water and theres a literal pipe going down from the houses on the hill to the ocean going really deep and you can see how the reef has been dying around it

Obviously that pipe is illegal please report it to the Coast guard (they have a website and phone number) and also report it to the DEPARTAMENTO DE RECURSOS NATURALES Y AMBIENTALES GOBIERNO DE PUERTO RICO (they will also have a ph number).. Please report it to both as one may be too busy to get to it right away.

That's fucked up. I hate what's happening on Culebra lately. Pretty soon there will be no places left to go to get away from the instagram crowd.
