In Pursuit of that Mythical Commando 273 Sound

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In 1965, Chrysler introduced the Commando 273, as a high performance version of the 273 LA engine. As part of the high performance package, a somewhat unique exhaust was installed. The Commando 273's had a noteworthy exhaust sound, often talked about, but rarely recorded. I have a '67 Plymouth Barracuda, originally equipped with a Commando 273 engine. The original exhaust was long gone when I got the car. And, years ago I swapped in a '68 340 to have with the 4-speed. More recently, I decided to partially return the car to have a semi-original exhaust system, in pursuit of that original sound. This is the video of the exhaust work, and sound so far.

Yeah!! I think you guys got it right! I had a 65 Valiant with the Commando 273 4 sped/Hurst shifter and that wonderful exhaust. That sound is more like a snarl than a roar. There was nothing out there like it on the road, it was totally unique. Everybody would comment it sounded like it came out of Italy rather than Detroit. I really think that it was never worth it to change to dual exhaust. The biggest problem the car had is that there was not enough room to put an adequate clutch in it as the car was built for the slant 6 and could only accommodate a 9 inch clutch. The dealer (under warrantee) could only beef up the clutch springs, even then it would still slip badly under full power.Good work!

haha - yeah, the 273's had a little clutch. This car is originally a Commando 273 car, and when I pulled the motor to put the 340 in, I remember my dad saying that clutch isn't going to hold the 340 (apparently it was lucky to hold the 273...). That put me on the errand to find a 340 flywheel/clutch (and bell housing...I recall...). Thanks for the comments.

I've always loved the sound of stock mid 60s Mopar big blocks. I had a 68 GTX convertible, that came from from Mr. Norms Grand Spalding Dodge, out of Cicero, Chicago area. I would occasionally pop a muffler off. (Exhaust clamps weren't that good back then). Anyway the basic mufflers were straight through, and by themselves would sound a little boomy. The factory oval exhaust tips, are resonators, and they definitely were a must have, to produced that great Mopar sound. It was a joy to put the top down, and punch it through a tunnel.

Great video and I was surprised to find that it's my area. I know United Muffler, Nampa, Caldwell; recognized every bit of it. I get on the freeway like that fairly often and the fish does sound great. I used to have a '72 shortbed stepside with a 273 in it (2bbl); dual exhaust out the side in front of the rear wheels, and between that 273 & the 727, it'd hit 75 in 2nd gear getting on the freeway. It was cold blooded as hell, especially in the winter. Wish I still had that truck. I've got a '79 Power Wagon now which needs a fresh motor (and a lot of other work; it's a project; a big one). I have (2) 318s, one threw a rod/broke the crank; don't know yet; the other needs rebuilt, but IDK if I want a 318 in this one. I was thinking of going up to a 340, or maybe something bigger, but then I saw this video and now I'm tossing around the idea of a 273. Who did you have build your 340?

Wow! Looks like this video has been re-uploaded with more video at the end, with the car at the track! Sweet! However, as good as that sounds - and don't get me wrong, it does sound incredible - I hate to say it, but a 273 with the same resonator sounds even better. I've had the pleasure of hearing a 273/resonator-only car several times and it's truly something to behold. The reason why the 273 sounds so good is because it's sort of "unique" in the world of Mopar small blocks in that it's the only LA engine that came with solid lifters from the factory. Which gives it a mean, chesty PUNCH that a lot of small blocks just don't have. Despite it having smaller bores and smaller valves, they can truly sound VICIOUS, and a lot of that has to do with their solid lifters. Don't ask me what the physics of that are, but if you've never been in the presence of a healthy 273, it's quite something to experience. It really is something you have to hear firsthand to fully appreciate. The 273 is just a different animal than other LA small blocks, and when combined with one of those resonators it's one of the best sounding V8 cars you'll ever hear. Factory or otherwise. Regardless, great video! Great camerawork and audio. 👍 Thanks for re-uploading this with the additional content! Cheers.

This car originally was a Commando 273 car. I swapped for the 340. It would be a power down, but sometimes wish I had that little 273 still. It is just pretty rare. I had a 65 formula S Barracuda with the 273 commando in that same dark maroon color and it did have a sound all its own. Sounded even better once it was balanced and blueprinted and a Racer Brown cam stuffed in it. Super quick car. To answer your question is this the sound not really it would be closer if you used a muffler. There is too much cackle with just the resonator. The cackle I am talking about is that sound of a small block Chevy pick up with glass packs located right before the end of the tail pipes. Kind of annoying IMO.
