Making the switch from floor wedges to in ear monitors has major benefits:
First off, stage noise is drastically decreased which in turn improves sound for the congregation. Secondly, the band becomes ‘tighter’ because they can hear better.
And finally, each band member can have a unique mix where they are slightly louder than the rest of the band so you no longer hear the dreaded question, “Can you turn me up in the monitors?”
The drawback to switching is the cost involved, especially if you want to go wireless with everyone having their own personal mix.
But, there is a solution for those working on a smaller budget. It may not have as much flexibility or look as pretty as the costly solutions, but it is way better than sticking with floor wedges.
So, in this video, I’m going to show you how to switch to in-ear monitors on a budget.

UPDATE: If you have enough available bus/aux sends for each musician to have their own mix, then a better solution is to grab a HA8000 (amzn.to/3ccufhF). If you need musicians/vocalists to share a bus mix but still have some individual control, refer to this video.

Good thing of HA 8000 is that you can plug up to 2 main mixes or plug a direct input on every 8 outputs. So the musician can choose between 3 mixes and if he wants to hear mono/stereo.

We use what I believe is a simpler, and more customizable method, with no sharing. Since M32 /X32 have 12 output buses, we use those for individual monitor mixes. The musicians can individually select their preferred volume for each of the 32 channels plus aux input via a smartphone or tablet app, and connecting to the mixer via a dedicated wifi router which is CAT 5 connected to the board, just for this purpose (not for internet). They also need a headphone amplifier (we use Behringer P2) and wired earbuds or headphones with an 1/8" jack. The headphone amplifier plugs into an XLR cable that goes to the appropriate snake output bus channel on the stage floor. The musicians cannot change any dynamics settings as these are channel specific on the board, nor my talkback volume. I can send them effects too, not sure if they can adjust that from their phone. And if a musician cannot get their phone to connect or doesn't want to mess with it, the sound guy can mix it for them from the board, or a tablet/laptop. The only downside on these boards is I cannot assign them a bus to mix (unlike the Presonus AI Live series), they must select it from their device. The jack they are plugged into is labeled with the bus number, but mistakes happen. If they accidentally select the wrong bus, they mess with someone else's mix!

A better way is HA8000. 8 people can have their individual mix, then just run a 1/4 inch extension cable to each musician and connect your earbuds. And boom, 8x personal monitor mixes. All for around 200$

The HA8000 doesn't have the facility that Kade is relying on here to combine an individual input with a common monitor mix. To use the HA8000, you need 8 separate monitor feeds (buses or AUX sends) to feed it. We do exactly this.

Definitely a great solution if you have enough available bus mixes for everyone. Thanks, David!

I set our team up about 14 years ago with this exact setup. It worked great and solved a lot of stage volume issues. Inexpensive, and gave everyone a "more me" knob. I had the band working off one mix and singers off a different mix. Everyone had to find the earbuds that worked for them, but after that, it worked great!

An alternative to the Whirlwind Split 6 is to use a Rolls PS16 Power Center for PM Series Personal Monitors. rolls.com/product/PS16 This provides a mono monitor signal plus power to 4 PM50s or PM351 using TRS cables or 8 using Y TRS cables. It has the added advantage of removing the need for individual power supplies for the PM50s and PM351 devices.

hey kade love your channel. wanted to share another inexpensive solution we use. Since this channels all about the x32. We currently run 8 seperate mixes to a beringer 8 channel head phone amp and then from there to 8 berhinger powerplay 1s. the whole set up cost like $250 bus and works great!

Hi Kade. Thanks for this video, it gives me some good ideas. Question though, since we already have separate monitor mixes going to each musician, can we simply omit the splitter for the musos and go straight to the personal amp? Is there a better amp option too? I'm thinking that the splitter would work well for the vocalists though? Thanks

If you already have the separate mixes, an HA8000 is cheaper for anything more than 2 channels.

Hey Michael - I agree with these guys. Since you already have separate monitor mixes, you just need something like the HA8000. If you need musicians/vocalists to share a monitor mix but still have some individual control, that is when you'll use the solution talked about in this video.

If you split the same bus to several headphone amps, the musicians will hear the same mix. The differential is when they also plug their instruments on the input, right? Won't this cause a daley issue?

  • @collabworship

    @collabworship

You are correct. An no, it does not cause a delay issue. I'm sure there is a slight delay in there, but I've never noticed it when using this setup.

Cool concept, but a little scary to run in ears without a protective limiter.

That's a great point, John. It would be wise to add a limited to the shared bus/aux mix to protect musicians ears.
