    @@carwynvan Live audio engineer here. There is zero way I'd trust this system on a stage with a house full of people: neither computers nor Wi-Fi are "trustworthy" on stage. Sure, they're decently reliable, but they're not mission-critical reliable. I'm okay with a MacBook or Mac Mini being used in a non-critical role (say, Ableton or MainStage), especially with a redundant backup. No worries there. For something as critical as *monitors,* though (arguably more important than FoH sound)? No way. Wi-Fi runs on the freely available 2.4 and 5 GHz spectrum and is usually paired with a packetized network over top of it. This has a few key issues: this spectrum is being shared by a ridiculous number of devices (especially...the audience's phones), for one, and packet latency is non-deterministic. Put simply, you don't know how long it takes for a packet to get from transmitter to receiver. This is fine on a reliable hardwired network with enterprise routing equipment (that's how Dante/AES67 works), but a wireless connection is ridiculously unpredictable...which means larger receive buffers...which means latency. The fact that AudioFusion specifies the nominal latency as "not perceivable" and not as a hard number is a ridiculous red flag. And that's assuming that you're the only device in the spectrum of interest...oh wait, nope! Every single band member is on the same AP, which can only transmit on 1 channel per band (let's ignore MIMO for brevity). That same channel could be in use by who knows how many other devices, which is a perfect recipe for packet loss...and very mad musicians when they can't hear themselves. Suffice it to say, there's an incredibly good reason why Shure and Sennheiser still use "oldschool" UHF analog FM wireless for their IEM systems: it's rock solid reliable when set up right, fails gracefully, and is a legitimately zero-latency system. Lectrosonics does make a digital IEM system, but I've never used it myself - it's also not nearly as popular.

    To get all 16 channels thats $1,600 thats plus $200 or so for a router, add the cost of a iphone for each member, then you still need to buy the the iem's themself, a headphone amp for each phone as phones don't generally drive the in ears hard enough then you need splitters and cables you basically still need a rack to do this live and have it protected and pre routed. Then there's the fact it has no eq compression limiter or other sound shaping tools on board. I don't see how this really is saving much if any money and ends up reallying on over crowded wifi. In theory it sounds nice but in practice I don't see this being a good option for most professional live musicians

    @Guillaume Lortie my Behringer x18 mixer was $250, Anthem Five e2 custom mold iem's $158, Audio 2000 wireless was $170 per person, two Behringer ms 8000 splitters where $150 each,we already had a dual band router that was sufficient enough for the x18, we already had a rack case for the band so no additional cost there either. Cables are always going to add up and you will need them with both systems. The differences aren't huge in price between both systems if you add everything up to use each systems maximum potential. The big difference to me is wifi versus RF stability I personally think RF is more stable currently. If given the option id upgrade my wireless to the sennheiser g4 systems and network everything but thats abit cost prohibitive atm.

Those mics and DI are connected to the main board. Problem, it depends of the size of the club. if it's small YOU handle the sound system and it's ok. A medium size club has his own board,and it has to be digital one. A large club has his own monitoring board on the side of the stage. I mean, if the owners doesn't want you to connect your computer to their board, you have to take all the XLR and plug them to your numeric board or soundcard . 0:40 - Easy - Behringer XR18 + UHF iEM like LD Systems MEI100G2 + isolating earphones (KZ ZSN Pro + foam tips is the cheapest way out). For your typical 5 member band that's ~280 EUR per person - MONO that is. But you can run the software on any device (Windows, Mac, Android, iOS) and you have a 16 channel recording interface as well. Getting this AudioFusion System will give you STEREO but you have to include costs for an interface (at least 300 EUR), an approved router (~200 EUR), license fees (450 EUR for 5 members), Apple hardware is required ATM so that's an additional 250 EUR for a used macbook + headphones (20 EUR per person). All in all this will be around 250-260 EUR per person. It sure sounds like a good deal, if they can release a Windows/Android version it will help keeping costs down even more.

    You only need an interface if your mixer is not digital or if doesn’t deliver multi channel audio through the USB. The XR18 connects with the Mac by simple USB. Then it’s just $99 per musician for CD quality stereo, wireless and Personal mixing all on one device.

    ericdano you do need a Mac but the digital mixer can send multi channel audio through the USB out. Dante will work too but you don’t have to buy a Dante card.

    @@AudioFusionSystems Right, BUT if you have the computer hooked up to a Mackie DL32R, then you lose the ability to control the mixer from the iPad. Having Dante to the Mac, you would still have iPad (or ipads) control on the mixer but also keep the ability to send the dante streams to the Mac. So you could have a front of house guy control that sound using the iPad, and each band member could adjust their dante outputs on their iPads.

    Eric Dannewitz I had a DL32R (pre-Dante) and use the DL16S now which also doesn’t have Dante. In both cases I connect the Mackie to the Mac by USB to deliver audio to SoundCaster and use an iPad running Master Fader to control the mixer. Connecting by USB shouldn’t kill your ability to remotely control the mixer.

    The bluetooth technology really does add too much latency to use it in live performance. Its getting better, and better all the time but, for now, you'll need to use use wired in-ears. We have an app called Director that the monitor engineer can use to listen in to each musician's mix and can help with the mixing. That app runs on an iPad and works perfectly with Bluetooth headphones. The additional 40 or 50 milliseconds of latency is no big deal to those who are not performing.

I understand the savings, but there's already that chincy hadrware piece that Xlive that came out for in ears for about the same price! Then if you already own a Behringer digital mixer you can set up digital mixes and send them to your band that way through the phone app! Might need to buy a chincy small headphone amp for each musician(Maudio makes one for $39) if need be. Oh and the Behringer way uses Android or Iphone, so not everyone HAS TO HAVE the same phone system! You can use what you want!

    Ideally you'd need to get a WiFi 6 router but in truth no system right now can even handle the speeds that can be capable with WiFi 6 right now. I assume this can only be used on a localized private system so you cannot stream audio over the internet similar to video over IP (VOIP). The real question that needs to be answered is how can you create a system like Dante that can operate over WiFi. Sending hundreds of raw audio tracks over WiFi with minimal latencey 5ms-50ms.

    My band recently upgraded to a Soundcraft digital rack mixer and we are using some LD systems wireless units* with it. It's not that expensive, it's very flexible (you can control it from any device that has WiFi and a Browser), very powerful (built-in EQ and effects, automatic feedback suppression, and even rudimentary amp modelling) and it works great. I mean if your band is using a MacBook anyway, you already have an audio interface and enough channels and everybody has an iPhone, you might as well use that. But these are a lot of rather expensive prerequisites in order for this to even become an option. Also that's a lot of potential points of failure. * You can also share a single LD systems MEI1000 unit between two band members if all you need is a mono signal. Let's say your band has 4 members. The Soundcraft Ui16 (379€) would probably provide enough channels. You'd then need two LD systems MEI 1000 (2x 268€) and two additional receivers (2x 164€), which makes 1243€. Of course every band member needs some device (a smartphone or tablet will do) in order to control his/her own mix, but that's it. If you need more channels (for more band members, stereo outputs, or more mics), you might want to invest in a Ui24 (707€). But that's still not that expensive.

  • @AudioFusionSystems

    @AudioFusionSystems

    4 жыл бұрын

    If you have the UI24R then you wouldn’t need any kind of audio interface. The SoundCraft would deliver multi channel audio over USB to the Mac. You typically need/want an external router anyway so then it’s just $99 per musician for CD quality stereo, wireless and personal mixing... if you have the Mac

  • @Pfaeff

    @@AudioFusionSystems I don't think we're ever going to need a router, since it wouldn't do anything for us. If we ever needed internet for our cheap recording PC (which is not a Mac), then we'd simply use any smartphone as a mobile hotspot. I get what you're saying and there are certainly bands for which your product would be the absolute right choice. I personally think it is a really cool idea. I'm just arguing that the alternatives for bands like mine are not as expensive as Fluff is making them out to be.

    Yes, this is really cool...but I’ve got an even better solution. The truth is that MOST musicians get onstage, stand in one place and stay there for the entire set. I’m a pretty active performer and when I got sick of my wireless guitar rig acting up I ditched it and haven’t looked back. The point is, you said “In Ear Monitoring System” and you’re right for a WIRELESS IEM rig you’re looking at thousands of dollars, but as we’ve previously discussed we don’t all need wireless solutions do we? What if I told you you could use a piece of hardware that costs you $40? Buy a Behringer P2 and a long xlr. The end. I’ve done several short tours now with them and they are a GODSEND. Most engineers are fine with you unplugging the send to their wedge because it eliminates feedback and there is literally zero other equipment or setup required. The sound quality is perfect because it isn’t wireless and you can set up your entire band for $40 apiece. The WiFi setup is cool, but you left out the most important part, how do you get those inputs to your interface? If you show up to a show with that rig how much repatching and frustration is that going to cause? If there are any other bands with a typical rig the engineer will have to completely redo the mix setups to send each instrument out a single bus and then put it back for the next band. As an engineer, I might do that ONCE to see how it works and that’s probably it. So unless you’re bringing your own jump snake or taking an AES jump off my stagebox you’re not getting those individual channels.
