In Defence of Sir John A. Macdonald

In the context of recent efforts to eradicate memory of our past, like the City of Victoria’s removal of a statue to Sir John A. Macdonald, William Faulkner’s observation has never been more apt: “The past is never dead. It's not even past.”
Truer words were never spoken about Sir John, Canada’s principal founder and first prime minister.

Great video, as an American, I feel I need to learn more about Sir John, not enough attention is given to the history of peaceful and prosperous countries and their great statesmen

I am an American and I am thankful that the good things about him are also shown. He was my Great (or great-great) Uncle. I feel better after seeing this video. Last night I had seen several unfavorable ones about his life. I feel terrible that his statue was taken down. And on his 200th anniversary!

History needs to be taught, not erased. Raise awareness of the good & bad actions/policies of Sir John A & other important figures in 🇨🇦 history. Then, City councils (as represented by citizens) should reach consensus on whether such monuments should remain in public squares, or be moved into museums. But that should NOT b decided by mobs who deface/destroy public property.

A W Yes, history needs to be taught and as comprehensively as possible, but statues have little instructive value. Their point is essentially celebratory, propagandistic, and cultic (i.e. as an expression of CIVIL RELIGION). Civil religion is dangerous in my view because, like false religion, it distracts a populace from the message of SALVATION through Jesus Christ, Who is God Incarnate. Let us not worship 'lesser gods'. I agree with you that removal of monuments should proceed in an orderly manner. But I think it should proceed nevertheless, and I don't want old ones replaced by new ones more pleasing to politically correct folks.

we don't learn from statues, they are nothing more than a celebration, we need not glorify someone representative of a dark time in our history. There is no difference between the peoples of the bygone warsaw pact tearing down statues of lenin or Iraqis ripping down monuments of sadam, as we canadians can tear down our cultic representations of a genocidal federalist.

History has l o n g been a bitter bone of contention, wrestled out amongst academics, parliamentarians, and the public alike here, in the Commonwealth of Australia. For decades, now. To my relief, I must confess, that we’ve never seen any resorts to vandalism, let alone the removal of, statues or monuments. It appears to us to be bewildering, tragic phenomenon wracking North America.

We need to know the good, the bad and the ugly parts of our history. The good to know what to do. The bad to be carefull. The ugly to know what not to do. It all to teach us how to be better people. If we do not know where we came from, we do not know where we are going.

The easiest way for contemporary politicians to raise the perception of their contribution, is to disparage that of those who preceded them. Progressives will always vilify the past to make their deeds appear that much more significant.

Thank you to Sir John A.! Let his statues be ressurected, his likeness returned to the $10 note, and his great name be put back on to buildings.

Thousands turned out to protect our history and culture in Fairy and were further abused by police and the legal system a statue is not like acres of 800 year old trees not easily replaced.

. Ever notice that nearly every statue removed or vandalized was a Protestant ? Yet total silence about the Canadian who owned up to 40 slaves . .

This contains some interesting material which I did not know. However it smacks too much in my opinion of the theory that history is driven by the vision and passion of a few 'great men'. Such a perspective ignores the role of the common people who do most of the hard, slogging work of nation-building. More seriously, it ignores the Sovereignty of God as taught in the Scriptures. (Acts 17:26-27) '....and He made from one man [one blood] every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation, that they would seek God, if perhaps they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us.............' I have heard it said in connection with the faults of dead heroes like Macdonald, that these should be attributed to the times in which they lived: for example, that Macdonald's racism is not all that reprehensible because it was the norm at the time for 'white' people of European descent. I am not so sure that this is a valid excuse! After all, the Bible (to which Macdonald's generation had access) does NOT justify such attitudes at all. Queen Victoria herself is said to have been remarkably free from racial prejudice. And Benjamin Disraeli, who is mentioned in the video, had been a target of racism, being of Sephardic Jewish descent. Do we really need statues of anyone in any place? Mosaic law forbade the erection of images, yet the ancient Israelites had an acute sense of history. It is represented in the Old Testament texts.

I don't see the people taking down statues burning the money with his likeness. (Btw, "limited government?" Not in modern Canada.)
