In a Galaxy Far, Far Away, I Was Almost Anakin Skywalker | 'Almost Famous' by Op-Docs

Фильм және анимация

It was the late 1990s, and 3,000 young actors around the world were scouted for the role of a lifetime. On the ride home from school, Devon Michael’s mom told him he’d be auditioning for one of the most anticipated movies ever. “The Phantom Menace” - then the next installment of the “Star Wars” franchise - was in production, and they were searching for young Anakin Skywalker.
Growing up, Michael had small roles in commercials, television shows and movies. At 9 years old, he understood that an opportunity like “Star Wars” could change his life. From 3,000, the producers narrowed it down to three, and soon Michael was at Skywalker Ranch doing a test screen with George Lucas and Natalie Portman. The role ultimately went to Jake Lloyd, who experienced a level of criticism and bullying that would be alarming for even an adult actor. In Ben Proudfoot's "The Unchosen One," Michael shares his experience as a child actor and urges the public not to forget that they’re just kids.

Yeah. I would have stuck them in the movie or used my weight to try and get them into a different movie (Lucas was/is friends with Spielberg, for example). Granted, that would have been like getting a participation ribbon and a pat on the head, but Michael looked like he had a lot of talent, and it would have been cool if Lucas didn't let that go to waste. Devon Michael’s captured the mature aspect of Anakin’s personality, almost close to Hayden Christensen. But Jake Lloyd was the innocence of Anakin, a 9 year old boy who dreamt of flying away, a boy who would eventually loose his childhood. I think that’s what George wanted, to demonstrate the tragedy of Anakin Skywalker, the boy who become Darth Vader.

In MY opinion, he was better than the third kid, but he kinda "UNDERacted". To be fair, I also feel Jake "OVERacted", but Jake did a bit better all things considered. In terms of looks though, he reminds me more of Hayden Christensen and Mark Hamill than Jake. It's sad (and somewhat weird) that being a part of something so magical had such a negative impact in both of their lives. I wonder how the third kid dealt with that as well. It's disgusting how toxic fans can be at times. I was a teenager back when EP 1 came out, a little older than them I think, and I really enjoyed the prequels. I disliked the sequels though, to the point of leaving EP 9 in the first 20 mins, but I never took it on the actors, after all it is so stupid to do so. Directors, producers, writers, these people are the ones to blame! They are ultimately the ones responsible for how the story unfolds, how the actors play their part in it, and how things end up in the big screen.

It’s not just “Hollywood”, like that’s some kind of evil entity. It’s acting in general. ALL actors EVERYWHERE on the planet, from Ancient Greek plays and traditional Japanese Kabuki theater, to Broadway to Hollywood get rejected. It’s just a part of the process of auditioning in general. Musicians and also people in many other professions also experience rejection, but because actors tend to go on more auditions more often, they seem to experience rejection more than most people in other professions.

Haters didn’t like the fact that Darth Vader/Anakin was depicted as a precocious talented kid and wanted him to start out as a bad@ss jedi knight. @@spaceguitar3290 Jake had more sincerity and more of what George was looking for at that point for the character. George was fundamentally trying to tell the story of how an innocent, angelic kid could turn into Hitler - it's the very idea that made him want to make the PT in the first place. He wasn't looking for darkness behind the eyes at that point. He was looking for a sweet kid who could display earnestness, affection and generosity - the way the character was written on the page. To my eyes, Jake's audition was much more sincere and less coached than the others. Of the ones auditioned, I think he was 100% the best choice.

He was far too good for Lucas's writing and directing - and both contributed to Jake Lloyd's (and Hayden Christensen's) ridicule for doing exactly what the writer/director wanted. I'm sure Devon actually wonders in those "what ifs" how he would have fared. He was clearly the best choice. Even as a child (with ONE line) there was something that showed the latent darkness lurking inside of Anakin through his delivery. It didn't have to be throughout the performance, just a few times, and what happened to him later would be more believable.

I think it's possible that Jake reminded George Lucas of himself at that age, and that's why he gravitated towards him. I thought Jake acted better in his screen test than in the movie itself, and that's not Jake's fault, that's the director's fault. I really like Devon's attitude about it, he's not trashing Jake. I think Lucas didn't want the audience "go cold" watching Anakin. He wanted him to be the kind of kid people wouldn't ever think could turn out to be a mass murderer. I agree that Devon seemed to be the most talented, but he went for what he assumed tiny Vader should be. George had a different approach in mind. I wouldn't say Jake wasn't talented either. We shouldn't forget, these three were selected from 3000 kids. Jake was kind of a soap opera type, while Devon was like a little Batman/Bruce Wayne after his parents got killed (I'm exaggerating a bit). Different set of skills for different genres. And Lucas always loved the 1950s and '60s serials that were a little cheesy. Jake was closer to that. I'm sure Devon could have pulled off the Anakin George wanted to see, but I think George was aware that talking with the actors and giving them specific directions wasn't his strongest side. He looked for someone who is closest in attitude and personality, on his own, to the Anakin he imagined.

I remember watching the documentary for the first time, and getting to the auditions for Anakin. Jake obviously felt right since he was the one who was cast and who we'd seen on-screen, but when they showed Devon's rehersal with Natalie? It was like night and day how much better he was, and my instant reaction was to ask the gods why he wasn't cast. He was clearly the superior choice. Don't get me wrong - Jake was a Hollywood darling and it's clear that George wanted a charming, adorable little cherub for the role, but that's not what Anakin needed to be. Happy, bubbly, bright, and optimistic are not the traits of a character that develops into that universe's most notorious villain. What Devon gave the character, however - the emotion in his eyes, and that ever-so-slight undertone of darkness in that last line, the weight of personality he brought to the screen...he could have easily set the tone for what Anakin should have been in the prequels, and the movies would have been SO much better for it.

Lloyd says it like he was asked if he brushes his teeth, or cleans his room: with weariness and disinterest. The 2nd kid says the line flatly, no emotion. But look at what Lloyd is doing during the audition; he's interacting with what's on the table, he's not directly just looking right into Natalie Portman's eyes. He's acting like a kid who's tired at a junkshop and trying to get things done while he's talking to a customer. I think that, and the way he played "I won't always be" (in a way that didn't make the line sound absolutely disgusting when you think about what it means, but more like, "hey, life changes, you know"), are what sealed the deal, for Lucas. His absentmindedly fixing the stuff on the table is a good link back to Luke working on parts while he's talking to the droids about his life during his second scene in the movie in the first "Star Wars", and I can see Lucas innately appreciating that since he was the guy who directed Mark Hamill to do that during that scene in the first place.

It was interesting hearing what Devon thought about how to play Anakin. His attempt to "look calm and focused" was probably what made him seem less natural to the casting group. I think he had the acting talent to give them what they wanted, though, if he'd only received clearer direction. Jake Lloyd lucked out that he guessed better at how they Lucas and the others wanted Anakin to be played. Unfortunately, Jake was then unlucky in that he still didn't get much good direction during the filming. You can tell even the experienced adult actors struggled with much of the dialogue in TPM. Jake was clearly talented, but he was still a kid and needed more direction.

  • @Cagebreaker

Indeed on Jake needing more direction. And unfortunately for him, George Lucas has not ever really been an “actor’s director,” so that issue especially crops up with child actors who are naturally going to need much more direction. Most people here saying Devon was great in his audition and the line "I won't always be" was delivered to perfection, and gave people chills, comparing him to Hayden when he loses it in the next films... you're missing something fundamental. George always said he never meant for little Anakin to be this "dark child" from the beginning. The reason George picked Jake is because Jake had the exact childlike vibe (yes, the kind that says Yeeppiee!) he wanted which was the whole point. The other kids clearly didn't. You can't have a character that's always been evil because then there's no turn, there's no drama. George always knew what he was doing.

Anakin at that point was just an exceedingly gifted, emotionally aware child who was damaged from: A) Being a slave B) His mother was a slave and resigned to it, which pained him even more C) They were trapped under threat of death via implanted explosive charges, and D) No positive male role models until these interesting Jedi and a very pretty and friendly girl stpped into "his" garage. His only lucky break up to that point was in Watto being pretty benign, saw cheap value in the boy, was not the most clever or strategically greedy. It would have made sense for a boy like Anakin to be... not dark... but certainly hurt and affected. What's more, from his point of view, he gets lucky and wins his freedom, but not his mother's! He has to leave her behind! That would be damaging, gutting to an emotionally aware kid like Amakin. I think this is what we the audience immediately saw as incongruant, on a subconscious level. Mr Lucas was mistaken with regards to child psychology insofar as syorytelling in film goes, if not in real life. There's no way Anakin should have been bright, innocent and optimistic; nor it would have worked if he were a dark brat. But soulful, determined... that would have made the difference. With the right performer. Then, when his Soul is twisted by Palpatine and the great Jedi he could have been falls BACK into enslavement... then the audience would grieve for the death of both Anakin as a young man and as the boy he had been... even though we knew it was coming. Young master Lloyd was the wasn't the best pick. His performance spoke to George, but it was clear there was a better pick who's performance could have spoken to and into the audience, which is what happened in the original trilogy. Peace.

I agree that Devon seemed to be the most talented, but he went for what he assumed tiny Vader should be. George had a different approach in mind. I wouldn't say Jake wasn't talented either. Really interesting to hear what happened to him. As soon as I saw the audition tapes Devon definitely caught my attention and seemingly most of the cast and crew. Just a bit sad to hear it was such a let down to him that that he quit acting all around, that there was no fun in it anymore... he seemed like a promising young actor. Funny how one event like that can change your whole life trajectory, and maybe it was better if that rejection came earlier rather than later. Must've also stung to be THAT close, second runner up, because you've subconsciously built up all that hope and excitement and thinking "maybe I can do this". I've had my fair share of auditions as a youngster too but I was more doing it for the experience/money than actual interest in acting so whenever I didn't get something it didn't bother me much. So close but so far away... I promise there's another universe where you got picked... but glad you found a way to leave that behind you in this one and not let it define you. Also, although he didn't make the final three, Justin Tyler Berfield who played Reese in Malcolm in the Middle was also one of the kids who auditioned (you can see him in the BTS footage).

Tears. You have those kids Devon and you continue to celebrate your beautiful life. The reason you weren’t chosen was because you simply outclassed the biggest Thud in cinematic history.

I always wondered what happened to him after I saw the Phantom Menace documentary back in the day. I vividly recall thinking how perfect his audition was. He was clearly the best choice for the role, but I guess George thought otherwise. I'm glad he's been able to make peace with what happened. Side note: Let what happened to Jake serve as an example of why it's important to be unconditionally kind to people, regardless of what you think of them and of their work.

It must've been a close call. Devon seems like a great guy. It would be a lovely touch if they gave him a role, even if it's a minor role, in a star wars TV series of film. Good luck to you Devon.
