Improving Shmup Mental Game, Overcoming Nerves, Settings Goals, and Practice Routine + Ketsui 1-All

Ойындар

In this video, rather than just doing my usual commentary on my Ketsui 1-all, I decided to talk about the topic of shmup mental game and how players can improve their mental game. I'm not an expert top-tier player, but I do think I have fairly strong mental game for the genre and I wanted to pass on these lessons that I was forced to learn during my long grind getting the Dodonpachi 2-all. I think learning a strong mental game is just as important as the in-game mechanics, which makes this genre really cool and interesting. Shout out to KZ for suggesting the topic!

    A few months ago I made a comment about struggling with the 1-ALL on this game, and I'm happy to say I finally did it and this video definitely helped. The biggest piece of advice that helped was your principle of "Now that I'm out of bombs, I'll show everyone how good I am at dodging." I made a lot of dodges that I wouldn't have otherwise without that mentality. Thanks again for this video! Here's the clear: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qnaKqsV9dda2gMo.html

    great piece here. it's interesting listening to more seasoned SHMUP players talk about how to improve in SHMUPs. as someone who plays fighting games at a high level and is getting into playing STGs at a much more serious level than "i've credit feeded through x/y games", i'm noticing there are a LOT of parallels between improving at your fundamental FG skills vs fundamental STG skills, and i think in a way these two things actually sort of work together in a symbiotic way. i feel like ever since i started practicing danmaku games, i have improved IMMENSELY in fighting games; and vice-versa. it's an interesting feeling.

    This is a great talk. STG is like skateboarding, so much of it is psychology and fear management. I’m good at neither but have some insight into both, and my tip is when you are mentally coaching yourself, try to make mental statements rather than commands. Rather than say to yourself ‘don’t get nervous’ or ‘don’t get scared’ or ‘stay calm’ , instead say to yourself ‘I’m not scared’ or ‘I’m calm’. Make affirmations rather than commands. Rather than tell yourself to calm down, tell yourself that you’re calm. It makes a difference.

I felt particularly pleased from the first part about what is hardcore because you described my approach to Ikaruga: started aiming at a simple survival 1cc, then as I better understood the game went to A-rank every Chapter, then upped the stakes and S-ranked them. It’s good how you talk about the process of playing these games. I think videos like this help people better understand the genre and what it is all about. I also prefer to do runs, identify my choke points, and then practice them using save states. When I hit the stage where I start regressing, I take a break from the game. It can be a few days, or up to a week, but I am usually much better when I return. A few times, I have come back to a game after a break and cleared it after just a few runs.

    I don't know how many people who are really terrible in comparison will stumble on this video but all of this applies to you too! My current Pissbaby Gamer Goal™ is just to beat Axelay at all on normal and this kind of focused practice and nerves management is how I've gotten really close to doing that. On the subject of feeling like you're not improving at all, I was feeling that lately so I went back and played the game on easy (which I'd beaten a few years ago when I was just getting into the sorts of games that I avoided as a kid because they were too hard for me) and absolutely destroyed it. Realizing that, no, I've improved a ton, gave me the confidence to calmly dissect my few remaining problem parts in the last level and target them for savestate practice. Really all of this is good advice for anyone trying to get good at anything that is too difficult for them.

    Nerves is a huge part of this. Quite often when I take a break from a game and go back to it - I am relaxed because I am not expecting to do well. - and do really well those first couple of games. Then when expectation goes up the performance starts taking a hit again. It's really weird. Ultimately - as obvious as it seems - there is no substitute for focussed practice. It works with shmups and racing games too I find. Getting routes through a level isn't that far from learning a track in time trial mode. With console ports I find having a good practice mode (e.g. Futari on 360 or Raiden III on PS2) really helps if you are prepared to put the time in. Save states are the ultimate tool for breaking a level down into sections of course. When it comes to survival (which is what I'm about as I'm not good enough for score runs!), knowing when to bomb is vital. How many times do we lose a life with a full bomb stock.....that's the most annoying problem I have. It has cost me a 1CC on Gigawing several times now.

  • @TheElectricUnderground

    @TheElectricUnderground

    4 жыл бұрын

    Yes absolutely, I had the same thing happen to when I would take breaks from shmups and then come back feeling calm. Console practice modes are also essential in my opinion, the port is incomplete without them. I also agree about the ability to reflex bomb, it's a skill that is really going to help in the long run!

    @@harmannsmith5653 I feel you, that level is brutal, i have been there many times and never once beaten it, i also feel like doj isnt the most beginner friendly cave shmup, esp rade and espgaluda are both way easier imo. ESP rade is available on Switch and Espgaluda on PS2. Maybe check those out, i think its about finding a comfy entry point into the genre and building up some skills, later you will be able to translate a lot of the things u learned in one shmup into another. You could also try to make a save state at the start of level 3 and just grind it out, thats probably what i would do if i was trying to beat DOJ, but as i said, i dont feel like its very beginner friendly, the whole engine and mechanics in the game.

    When I got Dodonpachi Resurrection 360 for the first time, I was very interested in and intent on learning what enemy does what and how best to handle the big guns that go off when you activate Hyper Mode, and then I looked up what the bee tokens were about. A week and then some later I eventually went 2-All on Arrange A and 2-TLB'd on 1.5. That is to say, learn your tools! If you're gunning for loops or are outright playing on a harder difficulty this is essential!

    When you said that you felt confident you could 1-all the game because you already had about 80 hours in it: that is a sort of eye opener for me. In my mind I always thought good players could do it in a much shorter time, and I felt bad being unable to do it in games where I have 4-5 hours in. That's a great perspective shift for me.

    my problem in STG is reflexes. im kinda not skillful for reflexes so, sometimes im push bomb button after a few frames. so i think Touhou was the best STG choice for me that has death bomb(bombing after a few second got hit) especially in Touhou 8 that really has long frame death bomb duration before it actually kill me. before training on Cave games. i was trying to 1cc on all touhou windows era main line games at least on normal mode and i've achieve that in 2017(2022 for touhou 15 only). and then my STG scene that make me more confidence to 1cc hard game is started when i try Extra mode in touhou 18. yeah i was dead a lot there. but luckily with your video and Shmup Junkies that about save state/practice mode behavior on STG games i was consider myself to spell training on touhou 18 extra. and i have beat Himemushi momoyo(Touhou 18 extra boss) with Reimu. and that makes me confice my self to clear all Touhou window era extra mode and i've achieve that! now is turn into Cave games. this started when i try to practice ESP.Ra.De with JB and i was reach the final boss at very final pattern. but i was failed there. but thinking of that i was thinking to try Mushi that i think the original mode has more forgiving difficulty. but i was wrong.it still difficult at stage 3 precisely. but i have found myself the best way to clear that. not in practice mode. but simply just play all from the beginning in score attack mode.i choose S-power because i cannot hold longer the enemy pattern. and it works. but still Aki cut my run. but after several try with the same stratergy and with luck i manage to 1 CC mushi original. and i was about to try dodonpachi 1-all next and it work with my mindset "don't dying with remaining bomb available, don't waste your bomb." so in dodonpachi i was practice reflexes (even the game strict with bomb lol) and i did it i can 1CC 1-all DDP with A-L type (and im planning to upload that run footage on youtube for my STG run record alongside with other game) and now i want to practice ESP.Ra.De (1 final boss pattern left and it always kill my run.....even i have learn that pattern.)

    Many shmups has a loop system. (Most has 2 Loops) If you clear the the game once, you get an 1-ALL. And when you get the requirements to enter the 2-Loop, you automatically start again at the beginning of Stage 1, but the difficulty is much higher. More and faster bullets etc + most games also has a TLB(True Last Boss) And if you beat the 2-Loop as well, you have a 2-ALL Note: Both are valid clears/1cc's.

For example in Death Smiles, the easiest of them all, only 3.2% of players have completed without continuing on Steam. I guess for a game like Esp Rade or DonPachi it will be around 1-2%. I think it's unfair to us in the 97-99% percent to called below avg per definition LOL.. Please reconsider you logic on this one..
