Nikon 24-70 f2.8. Scary sharp.

I knew about that but Mark explains it so clearly and his examples are so good that he convinced me I should always have my telephoto lens with me when doing landscape photography. It could turn an otherwise unproductive session into a great one filled with gems. A single wide angle shot could be a source of multiple beautiful photos.

I agree with you! I have some nice wide angle lenses, including an 11-24mm f/4, but I love using my long lenses, I love making vertical panoramas with them.

I really only use 2 lenses for landscapes. 16-35mm f/4 and 70-200mm f/2.8. However, I have occasionally used a 200-500mm f/5.6 for some trees and mountains way off in the distance.

This video resonates so much... I realized only not long ago that my 70-200 is my favorite landscape lens. I also tested the RF 100-500 a couple of time and it'll be my next purchase. I'm so happy you addressed this as it kind of confirms what I was feeling for some time but wasn't sure I was thinking and seeing straight! 🙏🏻👍🏻

As a landscape photographer, sometimes I need to make the choice as to which lenses to carry. Unfortunately, the 100-400 doesn't come with me as often as it should. And if I do take it, I usually opt to leave the 16-35 at home. BUT, the 24-70 and 70-200 is always in the bag... and panos are fantastic!! Great video and advice, as always!!

My most used is 100-400 for landscape photography. Occasionally I’ll use the 14-24 but most of the time it’s the long lens. Great topic!

Fantastic advice and exactly what I've been trying to practise since getting the tamron 50-400mm. Its a bit heavy and big for general use so the 28-200mm is used the other 50% of the time.

It's true! Getting unstuck from solely my wide-angle lens has yielded some compelling images.

Fantastic video! 70-200 is my favorite. I've taken some of my favorite shots with it.

I recently changed over to mirrorless and I was going to buy a new Nikon wide angle Z lens for our upcoming trip to Jasper and Banff. But, I like your suggestion of using my existing 70-200mm telephoto in a vertical orientation to create a pano! Thanks a bunch!! Keep up the creative photography! 🙌🏻

Oh YES! I use my EF 24-105 F/4L for pano - it makes incredible images - I have some that you could print at 4m wide and with full detail. It works great. I'm getting perfect 125mp images out of a 30mp camera. It just takes PS a few minutes to do the stitching. If your source images are good, the results are amazing.

I agree, I keep putting my 100-400 Sigma back on to when the subject is miles away. Sure, the 30mm is great in low light and when you are close to the subject, but when it's a mile or more away, nothing beats a zoom. I love the way a pano looks from a zoom also. I have a pano of Palo Duro Canyon State Park that looks amazing because of the compression.

Another excellent video. I use my 70-200 and even the 200-600 quite a bit for my landscape work here in the Pacific Northwest. I'm often shooting across Puget Sound, or across lakes and valleys, and the isolation and "lens compression" work very well. I also love the old Sony Walkman there on your desk. I had that same model that traveled around the planet with me back in the 80s.

I rented a full frame 70-200 for my last trip, and while I traditionally had shot wide angle a good portion of the time, I immediately fell in low with the different compositions (from one location/scene) that a 70-200 or just a long telephoto can provide you. The wide angle is good, but it many times will include too much perhaps when you don't want to, and something like a 70-200 or even a 100-400 or 50mm-?? will give you the flexibility to shoot more telephoto and pick out scenes within a scene basically. For the pano thing, I would say even if you have a 50 or 85mm lens, those could work as well (you don't need a 100-400 or 70-200 but the more zoomed in you are, the bigger the elements will appear and the more compression, but a 50 or 85 will work as well as distortion is minimized and maybe even nearly non-existant by about 85-100mm, which you want to avoid distortion and why many people won't use anything wider than say 50mm for panos). I would say if you are going to shoot a pano, try to shoot it vertically as you may lose some pixels in the top and bottom as a result of stitching them together and then cropping out gaps (or you could use AI to fill in the gaps, but I generally try to shoot mine vertically so I have spare pixels to throw away, particularly at the top -- it takes more shots to get the same pano, but I think -- in my experience -- the quality of the pano when merged may be slightly better than horizontally with less pixels that you can throw out).

I have a 60-600mm Sigma on order and you have giving me some great use cases other than just birds!

I love my 16-35 f2.8, but recently I’ve started using my 70-200 f4 and just take several landscape pictures and stitching it together to an ultra sharp high res image that you can just dive into.

i love my 70-350 in my a6400, the zoom pics are so fun.

Thank you very much for this video, as always you explained how versatile the telephoto lens is in a simple way, so the beginners like me can understand and make the right choice .... I suppose it's time to buy this type of lens if I want to obtain better outcomes ... 👍🔝👏👏👏

Zeiss 135mm f2 is my most used

Good video, as always. Great for the beginner photographer. A request - can you make a video on what focal length(s) (lenses) you've found to be most useful for your photography using the MF Fuju GFX system. I can't seem to decide with one or two lenses to get with the GFX 100 system. This would be helpful for those lookiing along these lines... TY

My most used lens is a Sony 24-240 f 3.5-6/3. It’s immensely versatile.

Before i converted to Canon mirrorless full frame I used a Tamron APS 18-400 and the wide range covered it all. The Canon lens is now have is 24-120L series RF and that has been a workhorse. I also can extend my range with a 100-400L series. The clarity and versatility of both are amazing.

Did you mean RF 24-105 L? I don't think Canon makes a RF 24-120 mm. The RF 24-105 F4 L I have is a workhorse too!

I have a small camera bag and need to have a lens attached to the body for everything to fit. I almost always have my telephoto attached. If anything , while driving of walking out to a shooting location, the "hey look at that" photo op (wild life, developing dramatic light, etc.) is typically a telephoto shot. If I come across something that is better suited for a wide angle, it usually takes some moving around/composing and the comparative effort to switch a lens is minimal.

I like to have clear subjects in my pictures, and that's why I never really liked landscapes as usually there is way too much going on. First time I tried telephoto for landscape I was asking myself if it was even legal to do it, and got amazing results (to me) !

Great video as always! I've always attempted to use a wide angle lens every time I get to a location I like, then look through the view finder and just cannot get a great composition. I almost always switch over to a telephoto for probably 85 to 90% of my landscape shots.

A "Maxell" VHS tape on the desk? It needed more dust on it ;-) Good tips, I love hand-held panos. Modern software is so nice.

I like the pano idea with a vertically positioned long lens. It would be cool to see a video on techniques for how to take sweeping panos with the zoom lens.

I can see that from your Tee Shirt when you say you love triangles. Great video.

My GF 45-100 lives on my GFX 100s but, I often swap it out for the GF 100-200 when the need arises. I've gotten some amazing hand held shots with the 100-200, even in low light.

I use my Rokinon 135mm f/1.8 for landscape sometimes. It is one of the most versatile primes I own. I can do subject isolation or centered landscape

Another very helpful video! Thanks! I am indeed on the fence to buy a telephoto lens, but I'm not sure what focal length to choose. I already own a 24-70mm f/2.8 for fullframe mirrorless. What telephoto focal length would you advise to start with? Curious about your thoughts!

I "see" in wide-angle, so my 16-35/4** usually stays in my camera bag for landscapes. BUT ever since the Tamron 35-150mm launched for Z-mount, THAT lens hasn't left my camera. Coupled together & the variety of shots I can get is 🤯 If I feel I need more reach for telephoto panos, then the Z 100-400 S lens goes along for the adventure too. **really hoping Nikon launches a Z 15-35/2.8 or 16-35/2.8 -- Canon & Sony mirrorless have them, Nikon needs to hit this specific zoom range.

I’m not Mark, but I’d suggest 70-200, either 2.8 or 4.

I use a 10 to 18 and a 55 to 250mm

Oh man...I've been shopping for a while now for the 50-140, but it's just a bit too expensive right now. ... I would love to have that baby. Been dreaming of it for a while. This just happened to me yesterday. A hawk showed up that was too far away for the lens I had on my camera. If I had been using a nice telephoto/zoom I could have gotten a shot. I really wish the xf90 f2 could accept the 1.4X teleconverter! Thanks for the info, have a great week.

My 24-70 2.8 and my 70-200 2.8!!

My 24-200 on my Nikon Z7. Maybe not the sharpest lens… but very versatile.

There are times I just use my 100-400mm telephoto lens as a challenge from the usual wide angle lens. Results can be waaayy better than expected :)

What length telephoto lens would you recommend?

What is your fstop preference in a zoom lens, 2.8 or something slower?

When I'm not shooting real estate, I use a 28-300mm the most.

Very inspiring. I shoot with the Fuji XT5. I would appreciate a recommendation on a long lens that isn’t too heavy for a short hike in my hands (not in a backpack). I have the 50-140, 50-230, and the 70-300. Do you feel the quality in the 50-230 and the 70-300 is great or would you recommend a different lens for more reach than my 50-140. Thank you!

Got a 100-400 for 2 years, one of the best decisions. Got shots couldn't achieve by wide and standard zooms

shooting mostly sport and wildlife, I only have zoom lenses. Unless you are doing studio work, prime lenses are just too limiting.

I once found myself without a wide enough lens and ended up taking a 21 image pano (7x3). There's always a work around.

This video just confirms that I should get a telephoto sooner rather than later. Just can't decide between 70-200 or straight to 100-400.

Exactly the same issue my end... 70-200 more compact for travel. 100-400 more reach and could use more for things like wildlife as well.

@@MarkDenneyPhoto It's an amazing place. Honestly though, it either takes a month long visit to see it all or you have to come back multiple times. It has so many different 'looks' depending on what part of the state you're in and of course what season it is. Completely worth it though.

And don't forget...you can likely RENT the lens you're interested in too.

Great insights Mark. I totally agree the different perspective the long lens gives. But I sold my gf100-200mm and got a canon 100-400 USM L lI with a 1.4x Tele converter adapted to GFX using Fringer adapter. Total game changer as I can use same lens with my xt5 with adapter.
