Improve Your Jazz Solos 7: Thou Shall Swing!
Музыка
This is the 7th in a series of 10 lessons to improve your jazz guitar solos. Here we explore in depth the use of swing 8th notes, syncopation, what makes a solo "groove", and we analyze Duke Ellington's "It Don't Mean A Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing".

Thanks John...much appreciated!
Awesome video, and love the improvisation - sweet. Although I'm a math teacher/ composer, I have difficulty counting the numbers of the beat. What works for some like me is to just feel the groove and just get into it and let it sweep you away. No need to count. Just feel it. I remember some member of Yes say that when he plays odd time signatures like The Fish (in 7/8 time). After a while you just become a part of it!

Thanks for the feedback Ricky! The counting is just to initially understand the rhythm. In order to improvise we all have to eventually feel the groove like you point out.

Yes I guess it has to do with left and right parts of the brain or something. Something non-Zen about counting while playing music.

By the way, your videos often inspire me (and others I'm sure) to practice the guitar from different angles. Thanks so much.
5:49 haha, thanks!
As a blues player I always think in 12/8 😂
