Developing "Good Hand" is the best thing you can do for yourself and your horse. It takes time and practice but it is so worthwhile! I hope this video helps you. 🙂

Can't remember where l learnt it as l was about six or seven, very much horse orientated, riding lessons, books and more books. I love your videos, fantastic info. I love this analogy of a mobile phone cutting out... Constant but gentle pressure. Great advice 🐎. My horse is very sensitive so she'll only needs just the lightest of touch on her bit. The only time I keep it a bit slack is when we are trail riding where I'm mostly just giving her subtle leg cues. Love your videos. Thank you

@@BasicHorseTraining -- EVERYTHING you taught here has helped me. TODAY was the proof. Your illustration of the poor communication [like a cell phone cutting in and out] with our horses really made sense and so I kept my hands lightly closed the entire time i rode today. He REALLY heard me and understood and i could turn him/steer him with my seat and legs alone with just an “indication” of where we were turning by lightly opening the inside rein….he turned right into it, no struggle no tugging no frustration. I have GREAT hope for future rides now. Third tip is cemented in my brain now and keeping elbows at my side is almost magical in its impact on my horse. THANK YOU FOR THIS ONE. GOLDEN!!!!

Great info.!! Especially toward the end when you mention not pulling with your hands. The horse can pull all he wants, but if your elbows are stationary you're able to give release immediately, or the horse will find the release immediately.

Absolutely awesome video! I struggle with keeping my hands from rotating inward. After a few rides of focusing on that it seems to be getting better. But ill have to try the crop tip. Thanks a bunch!

Allow yourself to be a learner Janet as one truth I can tell you is that you will be learning until the day you can’t get on a horse but don’t criticise yourself as that stops learning. Be inquiring 🤗

These are great tips! Thank you! Along the same lines of having good hands, I see that you wear gloves and I’ve been told that I should wear them to steady the feel of the rein & to stop the rein from slipping. Would you discuss the pros and cons of wearing gloves?

Hello! In this video, are you giving some heel pressure with each step, alternating with the step of the horse? I can't tell if it's just the rhythm of the horse or if you are giving little taps with each step, as if to keep the horse moving forward. Thanks!!

Thank you for this. I've switched to Western from English (or plain old bush bashing). The quarter horses I ride in my lesson have very slow lopes and their heads bob up and down. I have a lot of trouble keeping my hands still as they tend to go with the horses bobbing head! Western people don't seem to close their fingers but I will try this at my next lesson and see if by closing my fingers more and tucking my elbows into my hips if I can keep my hands still! I'm hoping if my hands are still and fingers closed my lesson horse may get into more of a frame. I'm pretty much taught in Western to use my leg and seat for turning. The horses I ride are both very well trained and basically if i just look a particular way, they'll go there but I definitely have trouble loping and keeping my hands still. By the way, are you from South Australia? South Aussie's seem to have a slightly different accent. lol

Thank you. I ride reining horses, and it’s just the same, I ride as much as possible with my body. Lot of the time if I am loping one, I’ll pitch the reins over my horn and circle them that way.. All your exercises have made me a better rider. It’s an English term, but what is “on the bit”? I suppose I could say as soon as I feel the bit on the bars of the horses mouth, I back off the pressure and wait with as little as possible for a reply. Thanks again.

This seems very thorough and useful info, but I cannot see your hand position well. The lighting is a bit too dark. Could you have close-ups taken occasionally, if you are describing some smaller motions, like hands, feet, etc. I go by your verbal descriptions, which are great, but the visuals would help. Thanks very much in advance....

any tips for arthritic fingers ?

I was trained early to allow the rein to go over your pinky because it is the weakest digit? Keep thumbs up and a very slight movement of the other fingers and wrist is all that’s needed. This together with leg pressure bends the horse even further. My problem was always too tight hands, so I had to lower them and constantly relax. Relaxed rider, relaxed horse.

Broke my left arm And cannot currently ride hopefully I gets well soon

I've been having some trouble to the left with a horse new to me (i think this is my 5th month with her now?) she tends to bulge in that direction especially and i kept getting frustrated bc i didn't know what i was doing wrong. will definitely try the elbow thing next time bc i think that was my problem.
