Nice. It would be nicer to have sources. Some of these quotes are by Maugham's characters and don't necessarily reflect the author's opinions. Some are paraphrases rather than quotes. And some are very likely spurious.

Well stated. Your comment also brings to mind the life/death story of Christopher McCandless who himself was an avid reader. Research on his life showed a very consistent world and life view he had, yet so many people disregard all that and for their justification they use some words which he wrote which were a summation of a section of a novel he was reading, so they could even represent an idea he totally disagreed with, but he was possibly just giving the author his due by applying a good reading comprehension technique. So now countless people attribute to him an idea that goes entirely different to the way he lived his life, which btw included a very extreme brand of brutal honesty and intolerance of lies and deception.

Alas, modernity has no respect for fidelity to text, to history, not even to ideas. It is the inevitable result of post-modernism's love of the variable, love of the individual's experience, be it informed by knowledge, experience, or disinterest, ignorance, stupidity, malice, or self-interest.
