I've just been watching some impasto demonstrations and thought I'd really like to try but can't afford to buy expensive gel just to 'have a go'. Then I find your video and now I have a huge smile on my face because I know I already have talc and PVA in my house. Thank you SO much. I love the sunset painting by the way.

But this does not thicken the paint. Try using a brush on this, and you'll see it splats down flat with the slightest touch. That's why she's not pushing the brush down into the canvas but merely nudging the paint from side to side. If that's impasto, the paint itself can do that with nothing added!!

zen The PVA counteracts the matte finish so you should maintain the shine once dried. It all depends on the amount you mix and the intensity of the pva . Would love to hear how your results turn out! 🎨🍷

Great question Cliff. Your suggestion on using marble powder, or calcium carbonate would be the closest provided you use the ph neutralised type. Also known as white, but will dry clear. The trick tho is if you use too much it goes opaque. You could try 4 part PVA glue, 4 part calcium carbonate, and let your acrylic be exposed to air to allow it to naturally stiffen. This should give you the effect you’re looking for. Let me know if you have any success! 🎨🍷

it might peel bcs is a shiny finish. it doesnt grab like it would to matte. If you apply more on top, you dont want it thick and itll have to be while its mid way dry like tacky but not wet and not fully dry... this is called a cohesive bond. Paint chemistry 101.

But that gel is not going to stand up to pressure from a brush! I don't know why all these demonstrations don't use brushes. The impasto seen here is not traditional impasto; it's almost dripped on from above, not pressed down by a brush. You could get the same effect by squeezing the tube right down onto the canvas and just nudging it back and forth with a brush. Impasto means "paste." This is not pasty. Can we stop with all the palette knife stuff and please show a brush???
