Immortal Thor #12: Thor vs Buri

Ойын-сауық

Tyr, God of War, has fallen so all of Odin’s children have assembled to save their brother. The key to Tyr’s salvation is found in the hands of their great-grandfather: Buri. However Buri is also the Utgrad-Odin and will not give up that key without a fight. Thor will have to defeat an elder god and the first All-father if he wants to save Tyr.

    It's interesting how each Elder God Thor has met has been more respectful and kind to him than the last. Toranos wanted to fight Thor, Utgard Loki wanted to test Thor, Gaea had a (stern) conversation with Thor and here it seems like Tiwaz just wanted to greet his family.

    Oblivion is nothingness and only was able to live within Tyr because a piece of him was taken out. That piece was the rune of his soul aka the rune of Tiwaz. When the rune was returned to Tyr, Tyr was made whole and there was no longer any room for Oblivion reside. It’s less about power and more about the nature of Oblivion. If there’s no emptiness, Oblivion can’t be there

Thor's agape mouth at realizing that back in 1985 he met his great-grandfather and didn't even find out despite the ocean of clues Buri gave was priceless xD Then Thor went "Fall, great-grandfather !" only for Buri to go *Fall ? Who decided that ?? I decide not to fall*

    I blame Marvel editors for all of this. Al Ewing has potential to be an Allenmore level type of creative force. He understands the nuances and has transformed the Hulk in a way that could last and have the same impact that Moore head on the swamp thing character If only marvel editors, marvel entertainment, allows it to be Thor, who is my second favorite character to the Hulk, has this level of impact with Al Ewing writing the tale. But I see the exact same problems running to him with this Immortal Thor series that plagued the Immortal Hulk. In that Hulk run, we had a set up where the Devil Hulk with team up with Namor, the Sub Mariner and attack the entire civilized world. That arc was never investigated. Now, with this series, I wish they would’ve kept the original artist on this because he was incredible. Even with that, we have these world ending styles of threats only lasting two issues and without any significant fights. All of these characters of the elder gods should at least last 100 issues to allow for the storytelling to paste itself all the way out. Al Ewing is that great of a writer and who needs to have that level of pacing. I know that Marvel comics in 2024 is it the company that can handle that level of proper comic book storytelling given? Its only mission is to fulfill stockholder value promises it made to investors. It’s things like this that make you wonder if it’s time to allow the comic industry to just wither away and die.

    THIS is in essence what I told both THOR TALK and Fernando Comics (along with their audience); don't get overly excited about a coming writer, no matter how talented the writer is, because these writers are EMPLOYEES and have to follow the general dictates of their EMPLOYERS. The writers, all of them, are following the trend of a lower level powered THOR, who is, I hate to say this, a joke as an All-Father, in terms of power (for example, weakening rapidly with a small use of the Odin/THOR power). People who defend this nauseating trend don't really have a knowledge of THOR's history and are probably "Johnny come latelys" with the advent of the MCU.

    Yes the threat of Oblivion Tyr was passed over too quickly. As a type of 'rule', we can look at the number of issues something was hyped-up, and the threat should last at least as long or longer than that. The Tyr/Skinner Box was teased and portrayed in a few issues, so the feeling is the threat and action should last for at least a few issues too. As for Hermod, that was also too quick - but maybe he got away or can be brought back via a rune (if he has one). I guess the rune-trick is potentially something Thor could utilize as well.

  • @slickchick5811

    @slickchick5811

    Sometimes its good to resolve stuff without dragging it out. There was still impact...they lost Hermod. the whole Tyr thing never felt like a lot to me.(Like why Oblivion was involved anyway) But it's fascinating Thor's conversation with Ullr...so this means the God of Doom is the only other sibling that is elder on BOTH sides! And a full brother, not half asgardian sibling. Very interesting.

  • @TimothyJ.Lochhead

    @TimothyJ.Lochhead

    @@slickchick5811 That's a good point about Ullr! And I know what you mean about getting things over with - though the flipside to something dragging on is going way to quick. In this case I didn't feel things were dragging, and what Thor Talk was saying being too quick because Hermod and Try were both downplayed. When that happens they feel more like cannon fodder than being anything meaningful. Perhaps the publisher is having things rushed, who knows. As exciting as new characters and prospects are, I wish existing characters received better treatment.

    I thought the same way about Tyr's seemingly easy defeat. He had proven that with a wave of his hand, he could literally erase a god (of speed, no less) from existence. So why then does some arrows and a barrage of flame prevent him from unleashing another death wave? Speaking of god of speed, I have a sneaking suspicion he will return before Immortal Thor is finished. Somehow. I hope. Oh, and LMAO at that sneak diss to Jason Aaron (should've included Donny Cates, too).

    @user-xf8pw6do5i I don't know about that. This run started off in spectacular fashion. Thor's battle against Utgard-Thor, along with Beta Ray Bill and Storm was awesome! The introduction and fight with Roxxon-Thor was hilarious and action-heavy. Even the Utgard-Loki story was very well- done and entertaining, as well as the return of Enchantress and Skurge, and their manipulation of Thor which ended up killing The Minotaur. It's only been this story arc (and the accompanying ill-suited artwork) that this run has taken a dip in quality, for me.

    I dont have a problem with Tyr/Tyr's body puppetered by Oblivion getting kept at bay by Sutr's flammes via Lausa. Oblivion caught Hermod off guard, the others were very highly alerted, and Tyr isn't physically all that impressive among his sibblings, just so much Oblivion had to work with.

  • @DavidJohnson-td5ic

    @DavidJohnson-td5ic

    5 күн бұрын

    @louisvictor3473 Hermod was caught off-guard, that's true. Just seems odd that Tyr never had the opportunity to unleash another bolt when faced with (admittedly formidable) flames, and an arrow-slinger, which is more a bad look for Oblivion, as it only required two comparatively lesser gods (one of which is a literal baby) to defeat him.

    @@DavidJohnson-td5ic But he wasn't defeated by them, or in combat, just temporarily stalemated. That is ofc not oblivion itself, just a fraction of it, but even so, all they accomplish was stall for time, locking "Tyr" into a defensive position, unable to make a move but also just taking everything while they were getting tired and running out of juice without doing any actual damage. Had Thor take just a little longer to bring the magical instant win card, the five of them would have died.

    I dont think Oblivion Tyr didn't live to its potential, beause I didn't see it as Tyr who has been introduced to the ways of Oblivion, just Oblivion itself (albeit in a highly nerfed manner). Tyr's body to have easier access to lower realms of existence than Oblivion's own. Tyr's soul/essence wasn't home, so I don't count it as Tyr, and the complete nothing it left behind in his body is probably how Nothing managed to take over his body. So I didn't see it as a fight against a new player/version of Tyr, but merely as a prelude to a probable later fight against Oblivion (Utgard-Demogorge, perhaps?) more directly, one that Thor and friends can't win by brawl, but only by wits, perhaps by turning Oblivion's own game and tricks agains them, like it is implied Thor did to Tiwaz (granted, Buri seems to have let him have that one to teach him this without saying it out loud, only Thor and Buri would fully understand the fine details of the unspoken parts of Buri's lesson).
