YOU DON’T GET TO BE RACIST AND IRISH.
3rd June, 2020
I.May
You don’t get to be racist and Irish
You don’t get to be proud of your heritage,
plights and fights for freedom
while kneeling on the neck of another!
You’re not entitled to sing songs
of heroes and martyrs
mothers and fathers who cried
as they starved in a famine
Or of brave hearted
soft spoken
poets and artists
lined up in a yard
blindfolded and bound
Waiting for Godot
and point blank to sound
We emigrated
We immigrated
We took refuge
So cannot refuse
When it’s our time
To return the favour
Land stolen
Spirits broken
Bodies crushed and swollen
unholy tokens of Christ, Nailed to a tree
(That) You hang around your neck
Like a noose of the free
Our colour pasty
Our accents thick
Hands like shovels
from mortar and bricklaying
foundations of cities
you now stand upon
Our suffering seeps from every stone
your opportunities arise from
Outstanding on the shoulders
of our forefathers and foremother’s
who bore your mother’s mother
Our music is for the righteous
Our joys have been earned
Well deserved and serve
to remind us to remember
More Blacks
More Dogs
More Irish.
Still labelled leprechauns, Micks, Paddy’s, louts
we’re shouting to tell you
our land, our laws
are progressively out there
We’re in a chrysalis
state of emerging into a new
and more beautiful Eire/era
40 Shades Better
Unanimous in our rainbow vote
we’ve found our stereotypical pot of gold
and my God it’s good.
So join us.. ‘cause
You Don’t Get To Be Racist And Irish.

Totally normal to try keep cultural heritage and identity intact, but sadly globalisation is unstoppable and soon that will challenge the ethnicity of all the countries. You are only one individual so you cant do anything about it, and the Irish law supports immigration more than average nations, because immigration is in the Irish blood and history, so maybe Irish people should point to a new national identity once the immigration has overtaken the country, I know that nobody likes to hear that bullshit but thats the reality.

I'm Irish and proud to be, always have been. I think my understanding of racism is different to hers. I don't think being concerned about your country, the number of people entering it, not knowing who they are or anything about them or the effects mass immigration is having on your society is racist. I think it is common sense and wise to have those concerns and ask those questions. We Irish are a wonderful people with a rich culture and traditions. Looks like there is an agenda to destroy not only the Irish soul, which this woman has no understanding of, but also rid the world of the last remnants of the Celtic world, of which we the Irish are a handful of guardians of.

Now make RTE television your new enemy, last night were reporting on the funds used in establishing Belgian economy, perhaps to your surprise, half of the companies that form pillar of their economy used funds from exploitation of the Africans in the Kongo. Furthermore, last week à museum was inspected in Paris-France, where it was found that 80% of the art in that museum belongs to Africa, illegally obtained, providing billions to the French economy. As an African, I know it well, FRANCE, USA, BELGIUM, ENGLAND, SPAIN, PORTUGAL ETC, all have been benefiting from stolen African arts and their economies are founded through blood money from the exploitation of Africans. Michelle Bachelet, the UN security chief, made similar statement yesterday and demanded compensation for Africans, I guess she is now your new enemy for telling the truth.

Your parents were fortunate to come from a country where passports were accessible to them. The million+ Irish emigrants prior to WW1 would not have had passports as they were not generally needed for international travel at the time. Highlanders (& Irish) burnt out of their homes wouldn’t have had documents. People escaping war, threats of violence/torture/death, don’t tend to have the option of heading to their local passport office before escaping, especially if the threat is coming from the state. You have no concept of the lives & trauma these young people have experienced but, of all western nations, I’d expect the Irish to have a little more empathy. After the famine years, the majority of Irish emigrants were economic migrants- you’d think you’d be a bit more welcoming to others in that position.

Who are the Irish kneeling on???? Please tell me because I can't find an instance, a law that's racist, a Garda, a soldier, a doctor, a priest, a teacher, a postman, a milk man that's been racist... What favor do we owe to the 3rd world, we couldn't even get a communion without having to fork over some money to africa. We had to give 10% of what we got.... All I got was a football, which I was so happy with... Yes the Irish emigrated, but went to similar cultures and had to work hard like my grand parents had too, but they came home, didn't have houses/rent paid for, clothes and food allowances, TV license paid for, a TV paid for, car license paid for etc etc etc.... These people who come here, come with there hands out, and demand more. An example a Bosnian woman approached us in a cafe with a card telling us her story in English, wouldn't leave us alone, we gave her €1 her reply was "its not enough"....... Can you imagine an Irish beggar saying that??? No. Even the junkies begging in Dublin say thanks, cheers or even god bless you..... I'm not a catholic either, but still cannot understand this Jesus on a cross reference, how is that offensive to foreigners, if anything the black people that have come here are more catholic than us now, a nigerian lady I work with goes to church 2 times a day. Should I find that offensive??? This poem is reading to much into events that happened in another country and is trying too hard to find a similarity in Ireland.

I would have said that it was about mass immigration into Ireland, about making the Irish a minority in their own country. It is also about the eradication of Irish culture and traditions. If you ask why this is happening you are called racist because you are not allowed ask. Yes a beautiful poem about the destruction of Ireland. And what about the author our teacher would have asked, we would have said ; at very best naive and gullible, and at the worst anti Irish and a traitor. Our teacher would have said " correct boys". He was a good teacher. He loved Ireland.

How is she trying to destroy Ireland by making it a place not to judge someone by the color of their skin? George Flyod the reason there’s such uproar around the world is because he wasn’t a immigrant he was an American local he had white heritage too on each side of his family through generations , but because his skin color was predominantly black instead of been arrested the same a white man would’ve been arrested put in a car charged and let out he was killed because of the color of his skin, hence why she’s obviously setting her own opinion about why Ireland shouldn’t judge people on their skin color or have vitriol or violence against people’s skin color which in a way is a evil disease . So there isn’t anything wrong with what she’s saying and how is it anything to do about mass migration and destruction if building a society not to be vitriol or violent against people because of their skin color , that’s actually building a society which isn’t destructive but virtual as treating us as we are individual even identical twins are different in ways as a country we have different color skin hair color different sizes so we individual but a society which accepts everyone is different and we all have our own virtues is virtue but not vitriol so in my opinion she’s not been destructive we all are entitled to our opinions but absolutely she’s not being destructive by saying judging someone by their race should be unacceptable

How’s been anti racist been anti Irish it would be the opposite if you were thought by my teachers who gave the hardcore facts , I’m a city quays Girl so we got the hardcore facts Roger Casement was a gay man who was in the Congo and promoted equality , Pearse was bi sexual and predominantly gay him and James Connolly wanted away from misery of being controlled and judged because of someone’s economic status , if they were having sex unmarried, if they were poor or rich and the color of skin was huge Roger casen was in the Congo remember the hard core facts and the did travel the world him Pearse and Connolly did basically die for Ireland against the oppression of the marital laws so why is judging someone’s skin color ok ? George Flyod was stopped breathing cause of his skin color was predominantly black eventhough he had previous generations of white heritage which could’ve also been whites who fought for America so the whites who fought for Ireland would they really want if their children or grandchildren had kids who then generations were killed by a police cause of the color of their skin ?

Hereticking the cop didn’t know his criminal record the cop had 18 reports , there’s a issue in America with vitriol and surpremacy as there is in South Africa from whites and blacks my ex is a white supremacist and he’s been in Ireland so I know how bad surpremacy is . George Flyod is just the boiling point nothing to do about Donald Trump because the whole world protested the fact the cop killed him not just arrested him put him in cuffs in the car he had vitriol without even knowing who was George Flyod wasn’t a migrant , many people make mistakes with drugs can’t judge him about his past either his daughter is still here and a parent lost again . There’s been many people framed in the criminal world who don’t murder but it’s covered as a criminal so it’s not a good idea in society to judge someone because of their past their background, if they used drugs or put people into frames or criteria’s because of their skin or past is more what divides people , excluding dividing because of the color of someone’s skin . I’m certainly not ignorant that’s why I don’t ignore racism when I see or hear about it I don’t just flog it as if evil abuse doesn’t exist the fact is it shouldn’t exist but it has happened that’s why we all want a better place, George Flyod was killed because of his color as he was American citizen but he happens to be predominantly black some white heritage but he was predominantly black and killed because of the color of his skin that’s why people had the boiling point about George Flyod and before George Flyod there was a innocent mother raped and her son stabbed by a jealous neighbor who hired a hot man in Miami but the hitman decided to rape her instead used a knife her son was harmed she was drugged her son called the cops the cops shot his mother then she died in hospital the little boy told what happened after there was huge uproar after it happend in Miami protests all the time but society tried to shove it down low because she and her son were migrants from Latin America the cops stopped protests apparently it was ok to do so cause they were migrants (which it wasn’t) but the protest fizzled on the grounds cops told people Hispanics have a crime level they thought she was trying to kill her son saying it was a mistake they thought she was trying to kill but really they killed her and people protested the obvious it was because she was Hispanic many other cases another was a few cops who targeted polish communities who had a bad past deported some harrased others simply because they weren’t American citizens then George Flyod who wasn’t a migrant was killed he was an American citizen for generations including some white blood but predominantly black. Racism doesn’t divide , marxists no body is saying other cultures are saints either this is about the color someone’s skin when she (Imelda May )talks about racism. Imelda May didn’t mention Donald Trump she talked about how we immigration which we all the time have done and so many in America so she isn’t trying to insult any of the many Irish Americans who are voting for Donald Trump as president she’s talking about racism , everyone’s entitled to opinion perhaps I read her differently but that’s how I read her she is saying racism is unnaceptable and she doesn’t agree with any of her homeland who are racists she which are thankfully a very small minority . You want to realize how color of skin doesn’t influence violence there’s black and and crimes of all colors but surpremacy is similar to a disease and the great news is it’s a disease which can be cured European caucasian countries including Scandinavia ,Ireland ,UK , Netherlands and some other non cacausin and caucasian mix countries such as France have the lowest disrespect and lowest violence against women in the world but yet white South Africans have the highest rate of domestic violence murders in the world and in 2019 1 woman every 3 hours murdered by domestic violence in South Africa was by majority white males the same as the South African husband who murdered a woman in county Clare who told her Irish neighbors if her husband does what he said to her before she gets on her flight home to send her daughters to her mother(her kids granny) in South Africa she told Irish neighbors in Clare her husband had been abusive and said he was telling her his surpremacy allows him to be the same as hitler and kill women this is not airy fairy lies this woman was murdered in cold blood as 1 woman in South Africa every 3 hours in 2019 was by domestic violence a scandal for most countries and media won’t highlight it many of us didn’t know as I didn’t til I had a bad experience by a South African supremacist and many who stil don’t know cause the majority of media outlets are just on the take for every story. There’s not 2 divides here I’m not ignorant anyways and “you all “ but I’m not ignorant and everyone’s individual so there’s not 2 divides in any society there’s not just 2 answers always has many more questions and not as simple as that. It’s also different to slag and have a laugh with friends about different cultures or where they from but if they are but vitriol and violence against that’s racism real racism and what happened to George Flyod was racism

@YieriNow of course there is some genuine racist cunts but every country has a certain level of Racism. Most racism happens up in Dublin and Belfast. Not really the rest of Ireland On the African Americans, we generally do support them. A older fella who went to America in the 1960s said the Black American communities were treated him much better than the White Americans. This goes for Native Americans too ( Irish people love Native Americans because they helped us in a time of need despite them having nothing and they will always be welcome in Ireland ) Now on Ireland being apart of that rotten empire. We weren't apart of them. Look at it like this, The English was the man in the house, the Welsh built his house, the Scots guarded his house and the Irish were shot like animals. Because they saw us as animals. Uncivilised, wild barbaric, unintelligible savages. In older English texts they describe us as more ape than man. So we had no part in their shit. The Pale was mostly English people, the Irish weren't allowed in as we were "savages"

Great. Do as you like. Are we going to have a movement like this for the Irish Traveller Community? Remember those poor people who died in a fire because of the poor accommodation? Ireland is a haven for people from other countries. We welcome so many people with open arms. I have heard so much derogatory things said towards Irish people from people who have come here from other countries, not the other way around. Ireland was taken from the Irish people for over 800 years, suffering terribly, no food to eat, we have barely gotten our freedom 100 years ago and still a quarter of our island is not our own. This is not America. This is not the UK. Do not pretend the same stuff goes on here as goes on in those countries. Do not blow up a minor situation in your life and belittle the Irish people who welcome you with open arms. To say that a white Irish person has "White privilege" in Ireland is absolutely dispicable. Do not let the media push an agenda and a problem onto us that is not ours. We need to cop on with this before a bigger divide is caused between all citizens of this nation.

Good man Connor. As a legacy of the days of the "Plantations of Ireland", in England, as a boy in the '50's, I was referred to as a "Black Irishman". Those who called me that, knew nothing of the wreckage of the "Ships of the Armada" in the Northwest of Ireland, but they knew that Sir Francis Drake had played Bowls. To be "Black Irish" to an Englishman in the '50's, was akin to being a "Black" man on the Plantations in Africa. History has always been written by the victor. It's high time we earned the honour - then we can write our own History, and not leave it to an Englishman?

Martin Cunningham Like all issues related to race, it is a matter of perspective and experiences. To me, an Irish Catholic women who grew up in Philly, this resonates strongly. I know that the Irish she is calling out are the millions of us who self identify as Irish in America. We hold our Irish history, heritage, dance and religion louder stronger and tighter than, as I learned after spending time in Ireland, those that live in Ireland today. But it is the 150 year old Ireland, the one were after the British stole our land and then used a famine to murder and deport us. We had no two choices but to leave on casket ships or die of starvation. Millions left, millions starved. The US begrudgingly gave us refuge (open immigration then). We also know that a major part of the Irish Catholic culture in Philly, NYC, Boston and Chicago is racism. If you need a current example, look at the men taking over the streets of Fishtown this week. We are the Irish she is calling out, Our children are who she is calling to action. And it is beautiful.

@@Jetdeuce2 I live in Philly and am of Irish descent as well. Unfortunately you are correct that there is plenty of racism amongst those of Irish descent here. When the Irish first came to the US (and I appreciate your pointing out that immigration was open when many of our ancestors came which makes the cries of "my ancestors came here the right way" moot) they were considered the lowest member of society along with the slave or formerly enslaved. When they started to get a foothold in trades industries and slowly started to climb up that ladder, they could have brought the formerly enslaved with them but instead, most chose to step on them on their way up. The Irish were able to climb to the top of society within a few generations because they are white. It pains me greatly to think of how different things could have been for African Americans if the Irish could have taken a different path.

Pearse and Roger Casement where Patriots in 1916 who wanted equality and happiness in Ireland would they want racism ? they wanted a country where everyone can be happy and treated equally Casement was gay Pearse was bisexual Casement was in the Congo and many Irish travelled the world with him to eventually go back to Ireland to establish the nation so why would they care about skin color? I just don’t understand why so many people are disagreeing with Imelda May . Also what racism really is isn’t slagging each other as friends we’re all different or having the laugh of difference not in a bully way but I often have the laugh with my friends about my mother been Hispanic then we have a laugh about being Dubliners as we do our friends from different backgrounds but Irish in the majority always but we wouldn’t be venom towards another persons skin color what happened to George Flyod , racism can lead to venom and supremacy diving and excluding . I accept everyone’s opinions but I just find it hard people disagree with her so many disagree and use Pearse when Pearse was friends with Roger Casement who was for equality and history has documentary casement Pearse Connolly were against racism, economic inequality for judging someone whether they were married unmarried with children rich or poor gay or straight they were against slavery in the Congo stood with locals in the Congo for a free state Republic so why would Pearse be ok with racism? I don’t know why

jon callum I was beat by a white African who’s the same supremacy ideology as 1 woman murdered every 3 hours by majority white males in South Africa in 2019 and a South African woman in Clare who’s husband South Africa . My point it doesn’t matter what color violence is unacceptable, George Flyod wasn’t a immigrant. I think the boy in Cork should get justice and those who perpetrated him must stay a long time for their crimes in prison i also don’t think violence should be accepted anywhere if migrants whether their white or black Africans if they breach EEA EU regulations of immigration and commuted vile crimes they should be deported but I think Imelda Mays point is not to have venom against another person cause of their skin color or any bigotry been a woman , socioeconomic, family statusetc... should ever be a factor certainly not a factor to judge or cause a venom and in racism it’s not about having a laugh about other cultures what racism really happens to be a venom against another person cause of the color of their skin everyone’s entitled to an opinion my opinion is and something I’ve learnt I wouldn’t ever judge someone if their dodgy by the color of their skin its behavior and beliefs and level of venom against someone

I think you all are looking at this from the wrong way. As an Irish American and an African American this poem speaks volumes. Growing up I’ve heard stories about the struggles and tribulations from both sides of my family and they are not that different from one another. Both slaves, both robbed of their land, both used and abused, both resilient, both strong, and both proud. My interpretation of this poem is that as Irish people and the history you have, you would be more empathetic to people suffering in the same way you have by hands of the same people you have. Your land was taken from you and you managed to get it back. Most countries didn’t. And some people where stolen from their land, raped of their culture and identity and have no idea where their original land is. Imagine not knowing where your ancestors are from? Your native tongue? Cultural practices? She isn’t blaming you for the injustice of America or colonialism of the English. She’s asking you to relate and sympathize, because you have a similar history. That race attack on that boy is wrong! And there is no excuse or justification for it. But the Irish are in a unique position where you can help nations/people fight back the same enemy you did 100 years ago. They want their homeland just as much as you want yours. You don’t carry the sins that the English do. So instead of being full of hate and fear fill yourself with love, compassion, and comradeship. The enemy of my enemy is my friend. Think about it.
