Imbolc - How to Celebrate

☽ See More ☾
Imbolc is one of my favourite Celtic Holidays and has some wonderful associations and folklore, but what is Imbolc? and how can you celebrate it? Hopefully, this video answers some of the questions you may have about this wonderful Celtic Festival.

    It’s worth repeating - be very, very careful when working with fire in any way. Plenty of people have caught their sleeves or even their hair on fire while doing rituals or spells. Also, don’t even think about going to sleep with candles still lit *unless* it is in a bathtub with a few inches of water. Alternatively, you can put the candle and its holder in a large fireproof container, like an iron cauldron or metal pot, again with water surrounding the candle holder in case the candle tips over or a glass holder breaks. You should also always have a fire extinguisher in the room you are burning candles in. It should be easily accessible since there’s no point having it if a fire is between you and it.

    My attempt at poetry: I'd walk among nature, to honor Brigid. But weather out there, tis far too frigid. Note: On Imbolc, we had a high temperature of 3 degrees Fahrenheit, and a low of -13. It is FARRRRRRRR too frigid. Some other things you can do for Imbolc: Shovel the driveway and front walk. Walk around the car and notice the corrosion spreading. Mop the floor where everyone has tracked snow and mud in. Hope this put a bit of a grin above yer chin.

    Here in America we call it groundhog day. I just figured it out. The groundhog sees his shadow on February 2nd or kaliak doesn't find any wood because it's too cold and wet and so the weather ends sooner. Last week I wrote down on my calendar the day of imbolc. Just Now I checked it because of your video.

  • @missymae8333

    @missymae8333

    4 жыл бұрын

    I immediately thought of this too! If it's a bright, sunny day, the groundhog sees his shadow and hides back in his mound, keeping spring with him, but if it's a cloudy day, he won't see his shadow (no sun) and he comes out, bringing spring shortly behind him :) never thought of the pagan correlations before though!

  • @annmarieknapp

    @annmarieknapp

    Me too. Yes, interesting how Groundhog day was made to coincide with Imbolc. To celebrate today I'm going to a magick shoppe that just opened up in the town I live in in the deep South of America. I am largely closeted. I don't hide, but I don't shout it from the rooftops either. So a magick shoppe opening here is serious progress. It's like Brown Vs. Board of Education just came down and schools are forced to end segregation. Okay maybe that metaphor is s little too bold, but the sentiment is the same. So hello from North Florida and the deep South where a solitary practitioner tries to worship without persecution and without fear. Just posting this is a radical thing to do, but after losing someone very close to me over a week ago I need to feel alive. Happy Imbolc folks.

    This year for Imbolg I'm going to make a Brigid dolly by dry needle felting red wool and then giving her a white cloak, and set up a bed if I can. I think that inviting her in, and setting up a place for her to rest is so good. I really feel as if fire energy from the center of the Earth is what calls to me this time of year. I also am going to plant my chrysanthemum bulb to invite the growth of the Earth into my home. Thank you for all the ideas, now I'm really pumping for Imbolg!

    This may be ‘wrong’ as brigid is so connected to fire, but I’ve always felt on an intuitive level that the element of water plays a bigger part for me in this holiday. Water for me brings up associations of cleansing, purity, introspection and fertility. The defrosting of rivers, the increase of rain washing away the past, watering the soil and nurturing new seeds. I am more drawn to the aspect of imbolc that represents this cleansing, and new beginnings. Happy belated imbolc!

    Actually took off Imbolc this year. Want to incorporate these kind of holidays into my new age metaphysical path. I feel a kinship to them, and each time I study one I find an example of their celebration within mainstream faiths. For example feb 2nd is also ground hogs day in the states. They use a ground hog to divine if winter will end soon, much in the nature that Bridget does. Now I'm wondering how that happened.

    @@francescamamlin450 I'm gonna guess early Celtic settlers to PA brought that idea with them. Wikipedia entry on Imbolc even says that people would look for serpent and badger(kinda like a ground hog...well sorta) den. If they came out they knew that Bridget would be able to get wood...so more winter.

    The folklore about Brigid's coming out on a Sunny day or staying in is the same as our Ground Hog day, if spring is coming sooner or whether we're in for a long winter. So interesting how different cultures have similar lore and traditions!

    Mine and my husband's wedding anniversary is the 2nd of Feb! I am so happy right now! I love that I can celebrate both! We actually married in our home. The synchronicities are so awesome! We literally married in our kitchen! I had no idea 12 years ago today why I I picked that date. But now I know😍🤗 I was also pregnant with our daughter at the time. This is so beautiful! I came out of the broom closet around two years ago, and am still learning. But I absolutely love knowing why I married the day I did.. it's like a little gem I just uncovered. Everything happens for a reason, no such thing as coincidence. 💕
