    Great video, really enjoyed the last star wars film at this cinema in the imax screen. I didn’t notice any issues with screen uniformity, but I did change my seats to the row at the back as any other row would have been to close for me. Would like to see a video on the super screen at this cinema, and how it differs to the imax experience. Thanks again great video.

    I remember The Empire in the 1970's, it used to be a dance hall with live musician bands, we used to go every weekend, I remember Nicki Spiros a lead singer of a band who I had a crush on. My friend Helen and I have some great memories there. We had to leave at 11.50pm to catch the last train to Manor House....Those were the good old days where young girls could be out late at night and be safe on the streets.

    The Empire used to be my favourite cinema, but tbh I've not seen anything there since the refit. I drifted towards the BFI, and now the Odeon for central London cinemas. It's also the very first cinema I watched in a film in by myself, without an adult. I was 14, the movie was Star Trek 4, and the truth is I was bunking off school!

    I do remember the old large screen Empire(I saw "Die Another Day" in that). It's kind of a shame it's gone. I believe that screen was the first in the UK to have Dolby Atmos installed(for "Brave"). I wish they had kept it, and maybe installed the IMAX screen in place of the other smaller screens.

    All that tech doesn't make up for the lack of real showmanship and the hatchet job they did on the original interior. As for the technical flaws as described in this video, it seems to come with the territory quite often with digital projection which is a very poor substitute for film. A far superior IMAX conversion was accomplished at the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, California. The interior was mainly untouched, the IMAX screen is bigger and films can be screened in 70mm IMAX if available, no tacky commercials are screened, and........there are beautiful curtains that cover the screen before each performance!

    Just recently I find out what they are. Check my video of BFI IMAX, there I'm talking about "screen shakers". Those squares that you see are the areas where the shakers attached, because they constantly moving the screen, they shake of the dust, so the screen is cleaner around those areas.

    Good review, I have been there many times, including before it was IMAX and was the Empire, I saw Jurassic Park there on release for example, they have essentially cut the theatre in half and placed a wall in the middle, on one side is the IMAX screen and the other side is the Superscreen, it was a VERY long cinema before this and now it's much better. This is my favourite IMAX in London, I haven't been to the newly refurbished BFI yet. The Superscreen is also very good, the sound is excellent in there too but there is less room and choosing the correct seat is more critical. I don't go to any of these cinemas when it's crowded. I haven't noticed the screen flaws you mentioned but I will look for them next time. Good point about the commercials, they should do that and make them smaller on the screen.

    The Odeon Leicester Square. The truth is I've only been twice since the refurb, but I instantly fell in love with the seating! The West End venue, I've only been to the previous cinema on the site and not the rebuild. The review on this channel says it's the better of the two, so I'll have to check it out some time. The other appealing thing about the Odeon is that, despite being a West End cinema, and despite the £40 ticket prices reported in the press when it re-opened, both times I've been I've only paid £10, which seems like a bargain.

    Cineworld's Leicester Square once epitomized cinematic brilliance. Today, only the SuperScreen and screens 2 and 6 maintain that standard, while the other screens leave much to be desired. As a long-time unlimited member, the chief incentive for my loyalty to Cineworld Leicester Square is the complimentary SuperScreen access, even more so after the loss of the 4DX experience. Should they introduce regular additional charges for the SuperScreen, a move they've tested previously, I'd seriously contemplate reassessing my West End uplift, potentially even transitioning fully to Odeon. The IMAX screen at Leicester Square was my go-to IMAX choice in the UK until unsettling square patterns caught my attention during "No Way Home" and became glaringly evident in "Dune." Such prominent discrepancies are unbefitting of an IMAX presentation and warrant immediate correction. My guess is that underlying structures or speakers press against the screen, leading to these noticeable square patterns. I encourage fellow cinema aficionados to direct their grievances to IMAX directly. My attempts to engage Cineworld on this matter have gone unanswered. Each IMAX show concludes with an email address displayed; I advise making use of it. If a significant number of us voice our concerns, they'll likely be compelled to address the issue. Meanwhile, I've redirected my IMAX patronage to Watford, as those intrusive squares have become too jarring to endure.

    I’ve been to this cinema a couple of times and I just don’t like it. I loved the old Screen 1 but they completely destroyed this cinema to retro fit an IMAX and I feel to many compromises were made. I find the seating uncomfortable and I think the screen is oversized in relation to the seating position. Anybody going to this cinema should definitely get seats towards the rear. My advice to anybody wanting to see a film in IMAX in London is go to the BFI.

  • @boredtech

    @boredtech

    I also don't understand how IMAX agreed on that recessed ceiling at the end of auditorium. Oh, and you are right about seating. But if you choose seats towards the rear you will loos on sound, so it depends on your preferences. BFI IMAX yes yes yes!

  • @CF-uh2xl

    @@boredtech You mean the low ceiling at the back of the auditorium, underneath the projection booth? Impracticability of removing it... (I've been to this cinema many times, and never have sat there--why would you?) The last row wasn't there when it was the circle end of Empire 1, so I imagine it's for capacity when needed, despite the sub-optimal location. The way to look at the auditorium is that it has 700+ seats, but a lot of them are "spares" for special events, including premieres. Either you wouldn't choose to sit in them, or in some cases they can't be booked. (For IMAX 3D presentations the capacity actually drops to under 500. The BFI also loses capacity for IMAX 3D performances.)

    @@boredtech The IMAX's sound system is certainly decent, but Empire 1's sound system was definitely better. It was the best installation I've ever heard, very highly specified, and clearly well tuned, with tremendous clarity and impact. However, it suffered from acoustic issues, with a "slap echo" that you could clearly hear on dialogue... and which made fast dialogue very difficult to follow. (Movies used to be made with "echoic" older cinemas in mind, but not anymore. Or, apparently, in the case of Nolan-directed titles, not made with dialogue intelligibity in mind at all...!) The same sound system was actually moved over into what is now called the "Superscreen," with updated rear/overhead speakers and Atmos processor. (Atmos was installed in Empire 1 in 2012, the first cinema in the UK open to the public that had Atmos capability.) Alas, that installation, whilst decent, doesn't sound quite so all-out impressive. As for IMAX screen size--the distance of the seating from the screen is exactly per IMAX specifications relative to screen width, albeit 1.9:1 maximum height. The screen width is at the upper end of giant conventional cinema screens globally; most of those that are bigger are only so by a few feet. If you want to visit a venue that has a substantially wider screen, then a trip to the new IMAX at the Traumpalast Leonberg multiplex (near Stuttgart, Germany), which boasts a 125ft. wide screen (1.9:1 ratio,) is in order.

    @@andysummersthxcinemaandmyc7748 The Atmos part was just for accuracy/completeness to explain where the equipment used in the Superscreen audio install came from, the key feature is the JBL ScreenArray screen speakers/active crossovers, etc. All the other non-IMAX "premiere" screens in Leicester Square now use Dolby SLS line arrays (the two Odeon Dolby Cinemas and Vue West End 5/7.) Atmos allows for interesting things creatively ("Nature's Fury" trailer, for example,) but my view has always been that the screen speakers count above all, the surrounds are there mostly for envelopment rather than directional sound. Or, put another way, I'd rather a decent 7.1 system over a not-so-good Atmos installation. The situation with Dolby Atmos, as well as Dolby Vision (and HDR more generally,) is a bit of a mess, for one thing it could be said there are just too many formats to deliver properly, but that's another story...
