I have seen this work quite a bit in high school and even a little with college wrestlers. Not something one would want to do on a regular basis but it can certainly be effective

Nobody thought funk would be effective. Even Dan Gable himself wasn't a big fan of it. Now it's the new meta.
Who came here after Justin vs tony when tony attempted that move to Justin

Imanari Roll comes from wrestling. LoL.... where do you think the name comes from? The move is named after Masakazu Imanari, a Catch wrestler who competed in Combat wrestling (Japanese Catch wrestling promotion) before he transitioned to MMA . Catch wrestling also happens to be the parent sport for Folkstyle wrestling, so it's not a co-incidence that we see overlapping in the technique arsenals.

He he, exactly, my 7 y.o. son likes it a lot, practised and waiting for coming tournament to try it out...thanks a lot.
I could get this move from the seated guard, but i find it's much harder to do from standing position.
Probably about as functional as a funk roll. Jiu Jitsu competitors aren’t particularly known for good wrestling, but imanari rolls have been used effectively on the highest levels, including MMA. Also, “imanari roll” is a bit of a misnomer as Imanari’s roll doesn’t look like this, this is closer to Ryan Halls roll he used against BJ Penn in his last fight. Cheers!
im gonna try this in mma practice 😂😭
I wrestled my senior year after wanting to for so long, I wrestled a kid at 113 and he tried to do one of these but ended up just flopping on the floor and looking like an upside down spider
That’s not an iminari roll. An iminari leads to a leg lock.

In wrestling its a gimmick. Read the title.
He said don’t do it but he didn’t say why
is this a good move to try in a street fight, like on concrete?

Jiu-jitsu variation of this move is completely and absolutely different. In jiu jitsu you tie up their legs and leglock them. You don’t go for an ankle pick. That being said an og imanari roll is actually pretty effective. Go watch Ryan Hall vs BJ penn and you’ll see the difference
So really good for no gi bjj, but not a good idea for wrestling.
@JoeScioli

Def not a good idea to think it is a “bread and butter” move in wrestling.

Look at ryan halls last fight (BJ Penn). He does this exact entry rolling over his own back. Ryan Hall might be the best example of someone using an imanari roll to attack someones foot in mma and bjj. wrestlers dont do this for good reason... because rolling over your back is a no no- hence me calling this a gimmick. far too risky.

Joe Scioli yeah this move is really designed to capture your opponents leg for a leg lock, so in any competition where leg locks aren’t allowed it isn’t as logical.

@@bobnugget The only guy that ever pulled off the Imanari roll in completion is the guy that invented the it, Masakazu Imanari. I don't think it's even a Ju-jitsu move, he was a self taught submission wrestler lol
