Iman Vellani on becoming Marvel's first Muslim superhero
Ойын-сауық
Iman Vellani used to dress up as superhero Kamala Khan for Halloween - now, she's bringing that character to life in a new Disney+ series, Ms. Marvel. The Canadian actor joined Tom Power to talk about the series and how it feels to be the first Muslim superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

I feel like the writers of Ms. Marvel said to themselves, "It's like someone made our character into a real person and we had no idea!"

Most likely, She invited Iman to co-write the latest Ms Marvel issues. They're actually really good.
I really like how well spoken she is. Unlike majority of the teenagers, she is doing really good and does not shy away from being honest about her opinions. Me and my fam are enjoying the show. Much love to you Iman ❤

@@hulkdhiraj Hijab is an Arab thing. Pakistanis don't wear it. Unlike Iran, there's no law to obligate women to cover their head. Most women in my Pakistani family don't cover their heads. Some put scarf (dopatta) over their head like Mary mother of Jesus did. Only a very tiny percentage wear burqas, which has been a rarer sight with time.

Representing or represented what ??
She definitely speaks in the interview to something I’ve seen myself in the show; at its heart the show is about finding inspiration in fandom. In an age where online fan culture can be so toxic and drive people away, Ms. Marvel shows what being inspired to be a good person can be. The line from Bruno in the first episode truly sums her up, if she wanted to save the world, she would save the world, she didn’t need super powers to be a good person. Superheroes are a power fantasy, and Ms. Marvel’s fantasy was to have the power to help. Iman Vellani captures that perfectly, and I think that’s why both her and the character she plays are so relatable. [Edit: I should have said “so relatable to me as a middle-aged white guy”, of course other people will find them both relatable in different ways.] Keep up the great work!
Wow Iman Vellani is absolutely incredible. The show is outstanding and so much joy to watch. What a joy to watch and hear her talk. She is a super star in the making and the future of our MCU! Thank you for this interview....
insane that she was insecure about her ability to bring the character into life but she IS her character & was so so good at it.
She's doing a great job on the show so far! It's great to finally see a longer interview with her.
I was raised Catholic and I liked how Daredevil portrayed religion as just a part of his life. I'm glad they found that same balance with Ms. Marvel. I think it turns most people off (myself included) when a movie or show feels like a religious lecture or indoctrination.
When I tell you I do not care about Marvel movies or Comics or anything I mean it. But listening to her be so genuinely excited about the universe makes me want to know more. She's not only great for the role but she's also great as an ambassador. ✌
Wow, she is so well spoken. Tom is a great interviewer too.
She’s so wonderful and I love the show! I hope she has a long and successful career!
I live right across the street of her high school. It's the art school in Markham, (I applied for music and didn't get in :( ) and right across the street, is a popular comic book store.....so I'm not surprised she's such a great well spoken actor and a comic book nerd.
I watched 3 episode and its actually real interesting series. About Iman, She is confident, eloquent, lively, and perfect casting. As a Pakistani i am very happy that they represented Muslim and Pakistani in Marvel sort of huge brand in such a positive way after a long time.
Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel is the best addition to the Avengers in MCU Phase 4.
I'm not a girl or a Muslim. But I still felt represented, even as a man in his 30s. I grew up as half white half Colombian and felt torn between two cultures. How to balance the two. Never did. But I could relate to that and I enjoyed it.
I f'n adore this girl Her, Haliee, and Gomez were gems so glad they are a apart of Marvel now
Wow I was crying by the end of this video. You truly are a wonderful man Tom. God has blessed Canada by both having such an intelligent sensitive interviewer and sharp lovable burgeoning actress to call our own. And they don’t even look alike! What a wonderful time to be alive.

Well I read comics but literally only Spider-man related comics I've read every superhero comics but only issue 1 except Ms. Marvel amd Spider-man I read every comics of them.
I am looking forward to the November premiere of The Marvels just so I can see what is next for Iman Vellani and Matthew Lintz after Ms. Marvel. By that time, they will probably have found their next acting credit outside of Marvel Studios, and since Ms. Marvel was the first-ever acting credit of Iman, I want to know if she and Matthew will only take on movie roles after The Marvels, or if they are open to any further parts in television shows or cartoon voice roles in 2024 when Matthew's latest roles before Ms. Marvel were one-season television roles in The Alienist and The Walking Dead. I think they would be terrific as voice actors if they are not big enough to have one type of career on the big screen. Jack Quaid and Karen Fukuhara's first acting credits were secondary parts in the films The Hunger Games and Suicide Squad, but a year before they met each other while acting in The Boys, they were already working as secondary voice actors in Harvey Girls Forever and Craig of the Creek, and then they also got to voice the leading parts of Star Trek: Lower Decks and Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts. So if Jack Quaid and Karen Fukuhara can start acting by getting a big part on the big screen, and decide that they want a bigger variety of smaller acting parts where their name is not a big selling point every time, then I know the same is also possible for Matthew Lintz after Pixels and Iman Vellani after The Marvels. Are you a revert or something ? Actual Islam is hard to follow no doubt, but majority of Pakistanis at least do as much she they can. Something is always better than nothing. If you are a revert, just try and it will be more than enough.
Wow is she gorgeous
Her story of getting the role sounds a lot like the way teenagers are treated in the Marvel universe, as well. Like she's got school, she's got things on her mind, and the big powerful grown-ups text her about some super-important (to them) thing, and she's like, "I have math." "I'm with my friends." "I have teenager stuff to worry about, as well as being excited about this really fantastic opportunity." It's like Tony Stark contacting Peter Parker. "I don't have time to save the world / respond to a casting call right now, I'm in geometry class, dude!" While at the same time, "I don't have time for geometry class, I've got to save the world / respond to a casting call!" Very relatable, how fantasy and real life echo each other like that. Also, "I'm just some normal teenager, with normal teenager stuff to worry about, but now all of a sudden I've been handed this tremendous opportunity to do some truly amazing things, which also happen to bear a very real responsibility to do good in the world, to represent my under-represented culture in the public eye in a positive way. That's a lot to put on a teenager's shoulders, but I'm up for taking on that responsibility, while also reveling in the amazingness of the experience." Very applicable to being Ms. Marvel, as well as playing Ms. Marvel. The writing of the show did a great job of portraying that, as did her acting.
The real life Kamala Kahn apparently was always alive and was a real life actual person, The MCU just had to wait until she reached the age requirement to sign the NDA lmaaaao😅😅 I feel so robbed because while I was in medical school for surgical tech I got a sketchy message to be a extra in the first black panther movie and as a joke during r lunch break I called and it turned out to be real they would even pay for my Uber to get to the set and get back home but the surgeon who was one of r teachers at the time told me if I take a leave of absence he would drop me so I never did it long story short I didn’t take the deal and stayed and school but after I finished school being top 3 of my class I ended up not becoming a surgical tech and for the rest of my life years later I will always regret the day that I wasn’t in the black panther 😢😢😢😢 like at that time when I was bragging about it people didn’t even know who black panther was but as a nerd and comic fan I had to explain to them who he was “King of wakanda husband of Storm” and etc and now Black Panther is a household name and everyone knows 😢😢 but I’m skinny as hell so I didn’t know why they wanted to cast me as an extra kuz all the other black dudes r super buff turns out they wanted to give Shuri the new black panther a best friend which was supposed to be me now that character doesn’t even exist omg!!!!! I’m happy that Iman did what I didn’t do also I’m kinda jealous because I coulda been in black panther 2!

I dono...i didn't get a good vibe from the interviewer! I mean felt like he had a major issue with Iman for not having a solid acting background. Two times he brought that up in the covo. Bro!!! you gotta start somewhere. Some people go through messive struggle to land such roles and for some, the stars are just inlined and they are there at the right moment. But the key thing is...would your talent be good enough for people and fans to see you??? Well let me tell you Iman Vellani is the present and the future!!

I think it was more expressing surprise that someone without the acting background was coming across so naturally in the role. She has the screen presence of someone who’s been in front of a camera for years, it surprised me to learn she’s a relative novice too. I absolutely agree she’s got a great career ahead of her, though! Hopefully with roles she’ll enjoy just as much as she is playing Kamala Khan. I suspect she’s going to have a few such roles written specifically for her.
