Imagining Stargate's "Lost City" with James CD Robbins (Dial the Gate)

Ойын-сауық

MUCH OF THE LOOK and feel of the Stargate universe came from the imagination of its art department. For the seventh season finale of STARGATE SG-1, titled "Lost City," artist and series art director James C.D. Robbins was tasked with creating the signature look of the Ancients - not only for this pivotal two-parter but for the spin-off series that would follow it.
In this conversation with "Dial the Gate" Robbins examines his original concept art from "Lost City." Of course the aesthetic of the Antarctic outpost would be reflected in the city of Atlantis itself. And specific props like the control chair, the drone weapon, and the Z.P.M. would, of course, make their way over to STARGATE ATLANTIS as well.
This clip is from Dial the Gate's full-length, 2-hour conversation with James, which focuses on his art from SG-1's sixth and seventh seasons. Watch the full interview here: • 206: SG-1 Seasons 6-7 ... .

It is fascinating to see the concept art for all those sets and for Atlantis itself. I think the idea of it being made of the rock below the city and somehow being held together and given propulsion by Ancient technology would have been interesting. I do love the design that we ended up with tho. I wish the show had had a bigger budget and we could have seen more of the city being explored and/or populated by the expedition. With art like that it would have been incredible!

I always loved the art direction for the Ancients. Their old Milky Way architecture is inspired by Ancient Greece, then their more modern tech used in Pegasus is inspired by Art Deco, which was a reinterpretation of Greek-Roman aesthetic during the 1920's. Perfectly fitting. It also reminded me a lot of the Forerunners from Halo, which share a common aesthetic and story.

I really - really - appreciate this insight to the SGA saga. I miss it terribly. I feel extremely nostalgic towards it, I can't imagine how it must feel for the people who were hands-on with it.

Always wondered why they never looked for the ZPM lab. They made them somewhere.

James' title was "Production Designer." He worked on designs for the whole of production -- not just props but sets, VFX, and more.

All is still quiet on the Stargate front... so sad. Anyways... I never liked the inconstancy of the size of the Ancient drones they were half the size of a human but on some episodes when they are fired and about to hit a ship they show much bigger. Just saying.
