Nico is the leader of the 9 bishops. They control the city of Dema that lies within Trench. Dema essentially represents mental struggles. The bishop’s main goal is to get the citizens to unalive themselves. The people in yellow with the torches are the Banditos. They’re the good guys. In this one they’ve come to rescue Clancy (Tyler) from Dema (help him through his depression). The yellow represents hope. The bishops can’t see yellow and are afraid of it, that’s why they threw the yellow flowers in Jumpsuit, to give Clancy a chance to escape. There is……so much more to it, but you’ll get there with the next videos. Levitate, Saturday, the outside. Not all of their videos are technically Løre, but once you know it, you can see it in everything.

They do that same handshake on the song "Stressed out," which happens to be their biggest hit. Has over 2 billion views. No doubt you have heard it.

Both of your thoughts about razor blades are spot-on. Each song has a message of its own, often about convincing people to fight against self-harm and destructive thoughts. Then there's the storyline, which is an allegorical representation of Tyler finding his own freedom from destructive thoughts and convincing others to do the same. Those hooded figures, the bishops, are manifestations of those harmful inner voices There's a lot to chew on, and even the non-storyline songs link up. This has allusions to Stressed Out, for example, like the handshake or the hooded figure Blurryface (mentioned in Stressed Out). T0P is a wild ride.

Joe, you have no idea how much it warms my heart seeing you really getting into the music, visuals and story of this journey! I Am Clancy will bring the threads together for you but yes the hooded figures are the nine bishops 'Nico and the Niners' who rule the dystopian city of Dema "Dema don't control us". The freedom fighters who come to get him out are the Banditos. Tyler has a draw full of yellow flowers, showing that he has escaped and been returned many times.

I see several people mention that they do the handshake in Stressed Out as well, but it goes further than that. It is, in fact, Tyler and Josh's personal handshake in real life!

Love seeing your excitement! You are doing great picking up on a lot of the elements. There’s a lot of symbolism, such as the yellow flower you noticed. In the box there were others, indicating that he’s tried to escape multiple times. And the items he puts into his backpack are call backs to previous videos, such as the white sunglasses from Ride. As others have indicated, the secret hand shake is a call back to Stressed Out. Tyler almost seems hesitant as the Banditos approach, until Josh shows his face and does the handshake. It further pulls Tyler out of Dema’s control. You would enjoy the Stressed Out video - even if you’ve heard the song a million times. And now that you understand who/what Blurryface (aka Nico) is, you will detect his presence and control over Tyler. This storyline crosses multiple albums. But in Trench, he brought the characters to life. Some of the lyrics and inspiration for the video come from George Orwell’s 1984, such as the references to razor blades. Just like Ren, Tyler is really drawn to dystopian literature.

I can't wait until you get to The Outside video!!!! Eeeeee...you got me cheesin'! Ode to Sleep is a good one to check out. Nothing really to do with the lore but everything to do with their come up. Doc style videography so not as aesthetically lovely as this era. Starts off with them at the beginning playing a show for 12 people.

I love all your reactions, great video! Them putting the stripes at the end reminded me of when I went to their concert. The day before the concert my friends and I were taping our clothes. We felt a sense of rebellion and liberation as we did this and all the way to the concert. I love these guys and the meaning behind everything they do. Keep it up!

Brah Brah, my friend, there is soooo much lore to catch with these guys!!! Josh created the this saga from their inception. This kid came in with a plan from get go. Almost every song has lore references or story concept/progression. It may be a rabbit hole, but it's a damn entertaining one. The Clique has been monitoring the videos l, Twitter feed, etc., for more than 10 YEARS and I havent found a single person who actually thinks they have it all figured out. Also Ned exists outside of lore, but also Ned stories cross paths but aren't l, as far as I can tell, inextricably intertwined. DEMA is a fictional place for Tyler that gives him his powers and his anxieties. nico/blurryface are the same people. He's revolting from them and looking for salvation.

Hi! idk if anyones mentioned it yet but Twenty One Pilots released a video called "I Am Clancy" where Tyler recaps the entire lore up until the current point (Overcompensate)!! I'd love to see you react to that!

So with the flowers, I think we're supposed to notice that the drawer he's putting it in has others of the same flower, and that flower is what he was holding in the last video when he was caught by nico and was dragged back. Meaning he's tried to escape several times before.

The previous album before Trench is called Blurry Face. That album is about the nine bishops (aka the people in red, aka Nico and the Niners). That's why that album has nine circles on the cover. They represent the nine pillars in DEMA. DEMA represents all of the negative thoughts we deal with that can lead to self harm like Depression, Existentialism, Materialism, Anxiety. We got to see the nine pillars of DEMA in this video, but you didn't mention it. Not sure if you missed it or just didn't make a comment. To better understand this video, allow me to introduce you to the nine bishops and their respective song from Blurry Face. As I previously stated each bishop has their own song and their name is mentioned in the song, but in an encrypted way. Here are the nine bishops, their Blurry Face song, and how their name is mentioned in the lyrics: 1. Keons - Heavydirtysoul - choKE ON Smoke 2. Nico - Stressed Out - He is called by his nickname in this song, aka Blurry Face 3. Listo - Ride - we have a LIST Of people that we would take 4. Vialism an ancient religion that promotes self harm as the only way out. That's why Clancy (Tyler) was singing for them to save their razor blades. Even though the bishops are encouraging them to use the razor blades for self harm, he's telling them not yet, because the banditos are on the way to help them. As illustrated above, Twenty One Pilots likes to be cryptic. We see a great example of that in this music video. At the beginning there was a message the banditos broadcast to Clancy in DEMA. The message was played in reverse. The message was "We are the banditos. You will escape DEMA and head true east. We denounce vialism." This is why in the song Clancy (Tyler) was singing "East is up!" Because he knew that he needed to head east to find the banditos who were there to help him escape DEMA. While there isn't a music video for the song Bandito on the Trench album, I encourage you to listen to it. It helps you understand the rallying cry of the banditos; "SAHLO FOLINA." That will also help you better make the connection to Overcompensate. One hint, there is a kind Bishop. The kind Bishop is Keons. We are told about this in Clancy's letters. Keep an eye out for him in future videos. He helps Clancy and the other citizens of DEMA.

Watching the Lore videos is great but you're missing out on a lot of great music with the rest. The entire album of Trench (including Jumpsuit, Levitate and Nico and the Niners) is just fire all round. I get that your main focus is the videography though and I like that aspect. Keep it up man.
