India has 17 such IL-76s and in addition 3 AWACS + 6 (IL-78) Tanker configuration. We call it ‘Gajraj’ (or king of the elephants) with love.

Indian Air Force also owns and operates Il76s. Il76 prooved to be a great asset in Operation Cactus (Maldives intervention) in 1988. IAF is the only force in the world which operates both Il76s and Boeing C17 Globemaster, along with C-130j super hercules.

Here in the Netherlands ( MAA) we loaded in the '90s three trucktrailers full of sigarettes for Russia in one IL-76. Sometimes there came 4-5 IL-76's at one day. Great machine!!

Soviet planes always had an overabundance of landing gears but in the west we have an over abundance of crash landings duo to landing gear failure.

Что с ними можно было ездить по болотам! Дословно! Our grandfathers military, having passed the Great Patriotic war (WW2) play safe in order to have the ability to operate from the ground, and as one of the engineers, the military ordered such characteristics! That they could ride through the swamps! Literally!

@@justforever96 Actually it is, Soviet planes needed to be capable of landing on farmland and open fields in emergencies, hence every plane needed landing gear to support such a landing, whereas the west never had such requirements as west expected planes to just land on the highways instead. Everytime a western plane has to land in an open field, their landing gear breaks, because its not designed for such, but a Soviet plane landing on literal sand and rocky terrain have always survived. Because Soviet civilian airplanes were designed and made by the military industry, using interchangeable parts with the military planes made a lot of sense, you could simply just strip the civilian planes for parts in times of war, but the good side was that Soviet civilian airplanes were robust, designed to take hits by flak and still fly and their landing gear was just same stuff you find on a nuclear bomber.

Those forward doors opening against the airstream, that must require some hydraulic power! And when in the open position, they act as some airbrakes. I always wondered if they don't disturb the airflow to engines 3 and 2?
