Transformers = one of the most impressive work by ILM. Why they didn't get an oscar for that show is beyond me.

You might consider starting by modeling a simple form. Something that you can observe at close range, hold in your hand to get a sense of its volume and feel its texture. Like drawing a human figure, start by blocking in rough forms and then refine them. Keep refining the shapes until you're happy with the finished product.

We take great pains to rig the robots so that the transformations can happen organically without a ton of correctives or cheats. By taking the time to do the work up front it pays dividends down the road.

Actually, the poles are not used for lighting but rather as a compositional element to assist the camera operators in framing the shot. There, now you've learned something new. ;) Thanks!

Dear ILM, I really, really wanna ask this question from a long time a go. What software u guys used for Jurassic park? coz it's really photorealistic eventhough it made on 93.. :D and what program do you using to match everything (the 3d effects and etc.) with the original clip (I mean the color and etc.) and makes it photorealistic? coz your work since jurassic park (the first film I know it done by ILM) till Transformers is soo realistic!! good job!! :)

@Satamanster We use Maya for animation - the look of the final render however is dependent on a number of variables such as shaders, materials, textures and of course the renderer itself.

@TaraArtsMovie We used a number of different software packages, most of which were created in-house here at ILM. For animation however, we used SoftImage 3D which is still available via Autodesk. The color matching, tracking, and compositing was all done in our specialized software.

@ILMVisualFX I am extremely impressed to see these comments being replied to on such common occasion, whoever runs this KZread channel for ILM should be proud, because answering these questions that people have is extremely important for those who want to work there in the future, and it's increasingly hard to find in-depth information on the techniques and methods of popular special effects companies (and just the industry itself) without having the ability to physically ask those who know.

Doesn't really matter what modeling package you use. Everything depends on your skills and the renderer you use in the end. You also can basically do same stuff with AE and nuke, but nuke is much simpler to work on complex scenes.

It would take months. It took them 38 hours to render one frame and seeing as that scene was done in slow motion, It was probably captured at either 500fps or 1000fps (Judging from the speed, I'm going to guess 1000fps). 38 x 1000 = 38,000 hours = 52 months. And that's just for one second of footage. But, this is a professional animation company so they would have render farms which would cut that render time by almost 3/4.
