Illuminated Manuscripts and Early Printed Books from the Rosenberg Collection | Christie's

Over the course of 30 years, Elaine and Alexandre Rosenberg assembled one of the finest collections of illuminated manuscripts and early printed books in the world. Eager academics and scholars could regularly be found in the library of the couple’s Upper East Side townhouse.
The Rosenbergs collected with great passion. According to their daughters, Elisabeth Clark and Marianne Rosenberg, they ‘perhaps even found a soulmate’ in their books.
The couple continued collecting until Alexandre’s death in 1987. Although she never added to it, Elaine took great care in preserving the collection until her own passing, aged 98, in 2020.

Very small book but the quality of the painting tell so much about the dedication in the making of that little book. The coloring, the writing, the decorations.. everything was made nicely wow amazing

Beautiful; one of our great cultural shortfalls is a lack of rich and easily accessible documentation that really builds on our rich cultural heritage on illuminated manuscripts.

Great stuff, but definitely none of which were made for the "average man, and woman", unless the definition of "average" used here specifically omits the masses who certainly couldn't afford any of these objects now, and/or then. One of these days, I'll become average myself.

"They were books made for the average man and woman of the middle ages." So the average man and woman had their own illuminated manuscripts... are you sure about that?

Remember, these books are made out of parchment or vellum, derived from animal skins. These aren’t fragile paper, they are a much hardier surface and material.

Some institutions actually prefer clean, dry hands to gloves. The thinking is that gloves might distort or mask your sense of pressure, movement, grasp etc. and you might accidentally be too rough, simply because the gloves don't allow you to accurately feel the fragility of a page and so forth.

You should use gloves when you handle books that old.

Absolutely not! It's an old myth and they put the books at risk.
