The Home of Susan and John Gutfreund: Old World Elegance | Christie's
Designed with Henri Samuel and furnished with the finest classical furniture, Russian works of art, silver, and porcelain, the Manhattan apartment of Susan and John Gutfreund was described as ‘the most beautifully opulent home in the city’.
In the mid-1980s, John and Susan Gutfreund acquired a 20-room duplex in one of the most prestigious buildings in Manhattan. Designed in 1929 by the architect Rosario Candela (1890-1953), the apartment block was also home to the businessman Charles Schwab and members of the Rockefeller family.
Samuel had a talent for incorporating a client’s taste into his designs, says deputy chairman of Christie’s Jonathan Rendell. The Gutfreunds had traveled widely in Europe, and the artifacts they collected provided aesthetic inspiration for the interiors. As Susan Gutfreund recalled, ‘Henri would discuss with me doing the perfect base, like giving a woman a couture dress that was sheer perfection whether she added fantastic jewels or not.’
On 26 and 27 January, The Collection of Mr. and Mrs. John Gutfreund 834 Fifth Avenue will be offered for sale at Christie’s in New York. The live sale comprises important English and French furniture, Russian works of art, silverware, and porcelain, while three complementary online sales focus on The Art of Entertaining, Selections from the Library, and Chanel Fashion Jewellery.

This is elegance! No minimalistic pay-more-for-less nonsense, or shabby not-so-chique, or property brother Chain Store homes. An age of craftsmanship, every piece invested to become an heirloom, interior that reflects class of soul and depth of intellect. Those were the days.

This style can be suffocating. I like it, and I find it exquisite, but there is a lot to say for rustic and shabby and minimalist and bauhaus and what have you style... it’s not surprising that people who have homes like this usually also have countryside residences / city apartments / beach resorts etc.
I don't know where to begin... The decorating here is at a level so far above anything I've ever seen anywhere and I'm equally in awe with how beautifully shot this was. Either there are two genius at work here, or the person who decorated this house also filmed the video. Just amazing.

I think the point, more specifically, is that new high-end homes are no longer built with objective beauty in mind. In this video, it seems authentic and beautiful. Today, it's more about fitting in with society rather than what is beautiful. White on white on white with no art or little decor in modern design feels lifeless and unwelcoming.
So classy! This is the epitome of coziness!Incomparably elegant!
So beautiful it should be kept as a museum. I could spend all day just browsing there.

Or rather, so beautiful that it should *not* be kept as a museum. Expressly so.
Stunningly beautiful. Exquisite taste, this is the personification of elegance. And it’s not about money. Sure these things are worth a kings ransom, but the ability to put any objects together to create a beautiful space is an art in itself.

Agreed, to a certain extent. Put a few millions in my bank account and I’ll gather as lovely a collection. I am confident I am not the only one able to do that with the right figures in the bank. In fact, it’s more of an accomplishment - however dubious - to not be able to once you’re at those prices. I mean, just buying a couple of Goya’s or Rembrandt’s and hanging them on the wall is already more than half the work done. That said, I have to sadly acknowledge the great number of people who manage to achieve the goal of creating monstrosities at whatever price point.

I lost my breath by looking at this beautiful, beautiful, beautiful home. My God, I have never seen a home as beautiful and harmonious in my life, and I've seen a lot already. Wouw!

Indeed lighting is basically essential - in everything. From photography to cinema to painting to decor. And even the more primordial pastimes. One can “fix” a shabby, cheap place with proper lighting - especially at night. Put some music on and you can at least imagine that you’re somewhere nicer.
Henri Samuel is a GENIUS! And while I have NEVER been a fan of French antiques, (I prefer English antiques) he has managed to convert me from his grave...I return to this clip time and time again, swooning over the GESTALT, the energy, the beauty, the composition, its all so PALPABLE... It catapults my mind, my imagination, and soul to a place and space I long for, one uniquely my own...Today, I co-create my vision with Henri... Now universe--GET TO WORK!

In the skeleton painting he is showing you all the things he collected over the years. Now that he has passed, well... he just wanted you to see it. Kind of like how we see this video. I enjoyed the parrot and the library. It feels like my Grandma's house a bit so that feels like home.
I’d love to live there...
Eventhough the styles of today is more streamlined, the mind, heart and soul of this decadent interior will live on forever. New money style can't touch Old money visual. To underestimate the worth of this collection based on what is perceived as todays design is saddening. There may be skeletons in the closet at the Gutfreunds home, yet there is beauty and happiness at every turn.

La belle maison ...
Susan Gutfreund was a flight attendant! She married John, who was a "king of Wall St." for a while. She's still alive and he's deceased. Anyway, very nice taste, but could have been a bit less heavy handed. I'm splitting hairs, and I think its got a museum quality that makes it less of a home. It shouts, "expensive" more than the word, "beautiful", 'tho beautiful it is.

Beautiful apartment, exquisitely furnished, and now apparently owned by Stanley Druckenmiller: keeping the property in the industry! Gutfreund was a symbol of Wall St during the 1980s and was largely responsible for the stereotypes that developed about the swashbuckling trader ever since.

Beautiful but oh so impractical...In real life, no matter how rich, you are not going to allow guests to eat off Flora Danica dinnerware or smoke a cigar in room with 18th century masters. The house is an illusion of grandeur but where eventually are you going to live?

At one time in my life I thought this type of decor was the height of elegance and sophistication. I am older now and the thought of being surrounded by these essentially worthless, emotionless bric a brac makes me cringe. Queenie Botox well I know you believe you’re giving your bird a nice life, and maybe it’s a domesticated creature bread for the cage. But it’s like a fish in a bowl, or a human being in jail. The bird’s nature is to be free. They are social creatures. Very social creatures. So you possess the bird and it is your friend because it needs socialization to be healthy, ostensible.
