Back in the late 2000s early ‘10s, before the “BBCOR” era of metal bats a lot of companies were making some dangerous bats. Easton, Nike, and Demarini were constantly pushing the envelope back then. Exit velocity was through the roof for kids and some bats were so ridiculously loaded there were on the banned list within a year. I had an old 2 piece composite bat made by Nike that sent anything it touched into orbit. One game we played a team using an illegal bat. Rather than call them out, we pulled the Nike out of the bag and went to work. 7 hits in a row topped off by a grand slam. I put the bat back in my bag right after that 😂

Yeah dude me 2, I had a really old bat even from before the besr. standard. And it was basically just a steel rod, a few weeks ago i used it in a game because all our BBCOR bats were gone. First pitch was a grand slam in the trees, but the umpire overturned it because the bat was obviously illegal. It was called the Louisville Slugger Air Attack

This is why, as an umpire, I ALWAYS checked the bats that are intended on use during game. I make it WELL KNOWN, that I was checking bats. Any bat snuck in after, that is later deemed illegal, will cause the player to be out and possibly ejected (depending on the childs age). If I suspected a coach of purposely doing same, they would automatically be ejected. Harsh, maybe, but when I give you every opportunity to check to see if it is legal, and you try to sneak it in......

The Coaches are supposed to check the players' equipment to see if it's legal. In this case it wasn't and the kid should've been ejected or they should've talked to the coach.

Emily Blackshaw Yes they should. When the rules changed, the manufacturers started putting what is referred to as a "thumbprint" on the handle. It's pretty easy to see and verify, being about an inch in size. It simply shows that the bat meets the current recommended bpf. Problem is the pace of the game and the umps get lazy and it just falls through the cracks. But...keep in mind this was right about the time that the rules changed and USSSA cracked down. So...there was a learning curve and you definitely had kids and parents with $300-$400 bats who were hell bent on using them no matter what the rules said.

To anybody that is wondering why the bat is illegalI believe that it has too great of a drop. The drop is how many ounces the bat weighs less than the lengthFor exampleIf your bat is 30 inches long and the bat weighs 21 ounces, then the bat is a drop nine bat30-21 = 9 Many leagues have a maximum drop of 12So if this batter was using a 33 inch bat that weighed less than 21 ounces, it would most likely be illegal. It looked to be a 2 1/4 inch barrel and it was clearly not a problem with aluminum versus wood. They would not have been able to identify corking on the field.

The rules when I was playing were that you could only use bats with a weight differential of -5. I swung a 32 inch bat so it couldn't weigh less than 27 oz. It was later changed my senior year to -3 so I had to change to a 32 inch/29 oz bat. Any bats outside of the -3 differential were illegal. Bats could also be no thicker than 2 3/4 inches. As far as wood bats go, most of the leagues I played in you could use a wood bat if you wanted to but there were no rules that said wood bats were illegal. College teams do not use wood bats. They use metal bats

so i was in the 11 through 12 league when one game i see this huge pitcher come to the mound and he was pitching wildly its my turn up at bat and first pitch slings it at my wrist it fractured it and i could barely believe what had happened so they go over to the parents of the kid and they ask his age and i wanted to kill someone when i heard he was 15 years old due to this we won a game when we were down by 7

Two things: 1) The bat is illegal because it doesn't have the appropriate labels. This doesn't necessarily mean the bat is loaded; giving the batter an advantage. In fact, these labels change over the years and you could have a bat that was legal years prior, but not legal any more. 2) The reason that big boy ripped that ball was because the pitcher is keeping ALL his pitches way high.

Baseball Ballbase That is just a dumb comment. Don't know if THIS bat is illegal or not...but yes...an illegal bat COULD be the difference between hitting home runs or not. I bet you are one of those dumb worhtless fucks that everyone laughs at who says that steroid using players should be in the Hall of Fame because "you still have ht hit the ball" As if extra power doesn't make the difference between a 340 foot fly out and a 375 foot home run. Or even give you extra bat speed to catch up to a 98 MPH fastball. The biggest reason to show why your comment is as worthless as your life is..if they didn't help...why would people use illegal bats or take steroids? "Gee...I know this doesn't help me at all...but I like to live dangerous and take the chance of getting thrown out of a game and possibly suspended!"
